About

In 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer opened on Broadway… and forever changed the landscape of American theatre. Two decades later, Jonathan Larson’s RENT continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world. And now, this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning masterpiece returns to the stage in a vibrant 20th anniversary touring production. A re-imagining of Puccini’s La Bohème, RENT follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. With its inspiring message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters—love.

  • Great Show, Too Big Theatre

by SC on 4/16/22Dolby Theatre - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

This theater is too large to house events of this type. Trying to leave was a nightmare. If you have only this theatre as an option, park somewhere else and walk or Uber here. Trying to leave on the escalators was awful (they eventually died), trying to pay for parking was near impossible (very few working pay machines), and leaving the structure a nightmare.

  • Just a huge blast

    by Cameron E on 4/16/22Rating: 5 out of 5

My second time seeing this show. And it just keeps getting better and better. The people playing Mimi and Angel gave it their all and had a lot of energy during their solos and I enjoyed it so much. The rest of the cast were just perfect with their roles and the they all brought me to tears. The theatre and our seats were great and the view of the stage was neat

  • RENT REVIEW

by LA on 4/15/22Dolby Theatre - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

I really enjoyed myself. I am a RENT fanatic and i thought the play was good. I thought the 1st act, however, was more weakly sang than the 2nd act, and i wish the actor who played Angel had more of a presence. I felt as if he didnt get to shine as he should have. The actor's who played Marc and Mimi were Great! I loved when they sang. ThebDolby theater was nice, however, they get negative marks on organization. There was no pre-announcement when the play was to start, the ushers were letting people in AFTER the play started- they should have made them wait until an appropriate time to bring them in-i did not get to throughly enjoy thefirst 10 min. There was also no cast announcement at the end.

  • Magical & memorable night!

by Blake on 4/15/22San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

We are so glad we were able to see RENT at the last ever showing in San Jose. The show was fantastic! I've thought about it everyday since and keep singing the songs. The performance was spectacular and I've been unable to find one that compares to listen to.

  • La Vie Boheme!!!!

by Chaney on 4/15/22Dolby Theatre - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing cast and crew, ESPECIALLY the gorgeous and outrageously talented Coleman Cummings as Roger. We went to opening and we're going again to closing

  • A Wonderful night at the theater

by Sandy on 4/15/22Dolby Theatre - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

I saw the original tour 20 something years ago when it came to L.A. This was better. Acoustics in the theater were perfection, each singer was excellent, and the staging was perfect. Thoroughly filled me with joy. And nostalgia.

  • Love this musical

by BooBoo on 4/14/22San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

We have seen this musical for more than 4 times, from on stage to on screen, we own the music CD, I performed the songs with my choir, learned everything from the creator and the tragic end, it’s sad over all, but that’s the beauty of it. This production in SJ is wonderful, quite a few strong singers, and the band sounds great.

  • Rent needs improvement

by Season ticket holder on 4/13/22San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 2 out of 5

The cast was sub par in their acting and singing. Could of done without the foul language especially since the there were quite a few children in the audience. Left at intermission, didn't feel the need to finish the show. First time ever to do that, very disappointing.

  • Absolutely terrible

by Liz on 4/13/22San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 1 out of 5

I wish I could give negative stars, honestly. The person playing Roger couldn't carry a tune in a bucket. Most of the others were pitchy although Joann and Angel's singers were good. But to cast someone without even any sense of rhythm as a main character is unforgivable! We ended up leaving at intermission it was so utterly horrible. I honestly can't believe this was a professional performance; I have been to better performances at grade and high schools and I will seriously reconsider purchasing tickets for any future shows at Broadway San Jose due to this.

  • Fell Short

by MGNite on 4/13/22San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 1 out of 5

Somehow I missed Rent and this was my first time. I took a couple theater majors with me and I felt lost. I could not follow it and thought it was just me. At intermission I learned they all felt that way. Was it that we were sitting way in the back at such a large theater? All five of us decided to leave at intermission. I’ve never done that ever and my passion is theater.

  • Needs improvement

by Eliz on 4/13/22San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

Rent was fantastic, but our experience at the theater was a disaster. There was an advertisement for a showing with audio description. We purchased tickets and drove over one hour to find that was for visually impaired individuals. My husband has a severe hearing problem and hearings devises provided at the theater are useless. We assumed the audio description meant something similar to Gala Pro (fantastic) or closed captioning at the movies. He got a hearing device that didn’t work which is par for the course. This is very shabby treatment for someone who has a handicap.

  • Amazing musical and touch me in many levels

by Selene on 4/12/22San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

After learning about the life of Jonathan Larson’s talented life, I have been longing to see Rent. It didn’t disappoint. I cannot believe this is a musical from 1996. It’s a rock musical bring up the issues with homelessness, sexual and gender identity, drug abuse, and etc. It touches me in so many different levels

  • Fabulous Rent!

by CeCe H on 4/12/22San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

We were so excited to catch the Farewell tour of Rent. The show, cast and energy did not disappoint. Such a great experience and I was able to introduce my daughter to this legendary musical. We happened to attend during an ASL performance and the team signing was outstanding.

  • Disappointing

by Noelani on 4/12/22San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 2 out of 5

We’ve seen a handful of Rent productions and this one was disappointing. The sound was terrible (this was already day 2). Some of the main cast members were not a good representation of the actual characters and/or had questionable singing or acting talent. We really wanted to love it, but it was big let down for it being the final tour.

  • Great and iconic but flawed

by jziz on 4/12/22San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 3 out of 5

I love this show and its music. The touring company is talented but the lighting was poor and the sound mixing occasionally muddled. This great show not well suited to such a large theater.

  • Show was amazing, ventilation not so much

by Christopher on 4/12/22San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

The show was amazing! I was disappointed that the venue air conditioning/ventilation system was not being used as much as it could have been. It was hot and stuffy in the theater.

  • I got goosebumps!

I can't help but get goosebumps when I hear Seasons of Love!

  • Rent

by Ford on 4/12/22San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 1 out of 5

The show was horrible. We left at intermission. They were off key. The storyline was all over the place didn't make sense. This is the first show I have disliked and I have seen many.

  • Better and Better!

by Kelvin on 4/11/22San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

I think this was our 10th time seeing the show, but a different cast. The current touring Mimi, Mark, and Angel have been the best that I have seen. My wife and I brought our 3 younger sons. It gave us an opportunity talk about some of the topics and themes of the show before and after the musical. The boys have been singing the soundtrack for the past 3 days.
