About

In 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer opened on Broadway… and forever changed the landscape of American theatre. Two decades later, Jonathan Larson’s RENT continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world. And now, this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning masterpiece returns to the stage in a vibrant 20th anniversary touring production. A re-imagining of Puccini’s La Bohème, RENT follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. With its inspiring message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters—love.

    Rock your shoes off

by BlinkyStar on 4/19/22Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

When I first got the tickets for RENT, I didn't know what to expect. I just didn't want us to miss out on watching it live. Halfway through the opening number we were all hooked. Sound was a little off the first number and it was hard to understand the words but it was fine the rest of the show. Truly such a high energy and emotional experience. The music was great and the cast was absolutely amazing. We absolutely loved it and I'm so glad we were able to watch it.

The yassification of RENT has got to stop

by MimiMarquez on 4/19/22Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

Service at the Dolby was great, all around great customer service. The problem is that this production is just not up to par with the standard of Jonathan Larson's Rent. It's not serious enough. From its actors' excessive mugging and indulgent, off-book vocal runs, to its trampling of various dramatic/emotional beats. Nobody involved in this production had enough respect for the seriousness of the subject matter of the show. Not the actors, and certainly not the director. Rent can be fun and funny, but it's also a serious, complicated rock opera about communication, love, death, and survival. It is not, as my partner so aptly put it, a theme park. This is an adult show, yet nobody on that stage was acting like an adult. This production may satisfy some fans, but I think if you, like me, grew up loving Rent in the early (90s/2k) days of Rent mania, the glossy commercialized yassification of the whole show will really bother you. Somewhere out there, it's definitely bothering Jon.

    great cast

by erin on 4/19/22Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

i have seen rent on every tour through LA since the late 90s - this cast may have been my favorite. they were just fantastic. however the dolby needs to figure out to handle the entire theater exiting the parking structure at once. it was a mess trying to leave.

So Sad to see you go

by PaulPB on 4/19/22Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

After having seen it more than 100 times, between Broadway and all the various tours... It was beautiful and well put together. And the Dolbey theater is my new favorite theater.

    Phenomenal

A wonderful cast that truly did a magnificent job. This includes the musicians. I so much enjoyed this musical and I have seen the production at least 3 previous occasions.

The cast was spectacular but the singing was out of this world.

    An awesome performance

by Rob on 4/19/22Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

Being kind of a RENT groupoe, this touring cast did a phenomenal job! Although all were great, the roles of Angel, Mark, JoAnne and the homeless woman were top shelf. Thank you. I’m sad it’s the ‘final’ tour!!

I thought it was a beautifully presented.

by Gilbert on 4/19/22San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San Jose

I thought it wqs beautifully presented. It is not one of my all time favorite musicals, but the orchestration, the choreography, and the staging wqs wonderful and beautiful. I would recommend everyone sees the play live at least once.

    I laughed, I cried, I rocked out!

by MikeD on 4/18/22Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

This cast is truly phenomenal! Beautiful voices... A physical, well paced, emotional rollercoaster ride of the best kind. I hate to be cliche, but this is a must see, and you won't find a bad seat at the Dolby Theater.

    Great Show, but...

by RW on 4/18/22Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

Set, Lighting, Music, Costumes, performances were all excellent. The cast and crew were at the top of there game, with one exception. Audio. The sound was not mixed well. The vocals were often garbled and hard to understand. The music often drowned out the vocals, again, making it hard to understand what they were talking/singing about. I loved the production, but sound mixing was not balanced and detracted from my enjoyment (and understanding) of the show.

Great production, fantastic cast (with an exception here and there), but didn’t take away from my enjoying this personal favorite since it first came out!

    Gutted

by Gabi on 4/18/22Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

Rent is a musical I have wanted to see live since I was in middle school but my mom felt I was too young to watch. Seeing the musical Friday was something I was finally able to cross off my bucket list. The cast was so extremely talented and lived up to my expectations! I am gutted that this will be the one and only experience I can see this production live but will cherish this moment for the rest of my years! <3

    Amazing

by Universalratio on 4/18/22Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

Im in the precipice of thr age where this story is becoming irrelevant, so I am grateful I got to see it in its final season. I am also grateful that HIV / AIDS no longer means a death sentence. At least in this country it doesn't have to be. The lyrics, music, ensamble, costumes, set...I am speechless. So original for the time of its opening. The cast here in Los Angeles really delivered. I was in awe. Thank you for the final season being one to remember.

Great performances, classic songs, some tech issues

by Danny C on 4/17/22Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

It was great hearing the old songs again. The cast really have it their own. I enjoyed it immensely. Felt like I was a 90s teenager again. Only negative was that our performance had a few technical issues mostly with the sound but also some of the backstage lighting was visible at times. It was surprising for a show like this especially at a premier venue.

    Okay

Couldn’t really understand the first act. Beginning of second act was a little easier and enjoyable. But hard to follow the musical.

    Voices

    by K49jimbo on 4/17/22Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

The production was first rate. Few of the voices were a cut above, although they are all supremely talented. My only negative is the sound quality was a bit tinny for my taste. Didn’t take away from a great show. I had forgotten how sad parts of the show are, so it was a good emotional roller coaster.

Story heavy musical in a nice venue

by coolaturon on 4/17/22Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

I went to RENT to see the Dolby Theatre from the inside. The Theatre is beautiful, but the show has room for improvement. The story features a lot of characters an none really matters. It’s more of a collection of subplots. Additionally, the stage design (although being visually appealing) was hard to understand. It was not totally clear what it was supposed to represent - the flat, the lot, the city, all of the above? The stage setting was also rarely used by the actors. The main props were some chairs and tables arranged differently for every scene. The stage setting never changed and it was little to no stage technology used to support the story - except for a change of lighting. Last but not least, I want to point out that the band and actors did an awesome job playing, singing and dancing. They are all really extremely talented.

    Great, great show!

by Huntbunny on 4/16/22Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

We thought the cast of Rent were much better singers than the touring company if Hamilton. Do not miss!
