About

In 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer opened on Broadway… and forever changed the landscape of American theatre. Two decades later, Jonathan Larson’s RENT continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world. And now, this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning masterpiece returns to the stage in a vibrant 20th anniversary touring production. A re-imagining of Puccini’s La Bohème, RENT follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. With its inspiring message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters—love.

The woke have no common sense.

by db on 4/26/22San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

We to see the last show of rent touring. For the last time. We have not seen this show for a least 20 years. The performance was great. The problem was groups of woke's keep talking over the performer's. People were not happy with their talking all the time. We came to see a play and enjoy the show. The first act was so noisy that we moved seats. To the top of the balcony to enjoy the second act in peace. The twenty somethings were so moved by the "freedom of the homeless in the story. That they had to walk by a tent city parked right behind the theater. I don't the people were living the same experience as the woke's view of what homelessness is. The best line I heard in the audience say is what is AZT. The play was about living with AIDS. They missed the whole meaning. Sad.

    My favorite broadway musical

by Giann on 4/26/22San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

I knew I had to buy a ticket knowing that this was the farewell tour! I’m going to miss this so much. It was a great run. Seasons of Love is of course the highlight of the performance. The actors portrayed their characters really well. The musical scoring and soundtrack is just amazing. The movements, dancing and acting was phenomenal. I love all the songs and I recognized most of them because I watched the movie “Rent” and watched the live musical back in 2008 at the Civic Theater. I was only 12 at the time but now I appreciate it even more at 25 years old. I’m glad I went and I’m glad there was a 2pm show because of my hectic work schedule. It was an easy process coming in and getting situated. The ushers were kind and helpful. Overall, it was a memorable experience!

not as amazing as i had expected

by mmbs on 4/26/22San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

i am a serious rent fan. know all of the words, sing in the shower, feel tied to maureen in a spiritual sense. but this performance just didn’t do it for me. lots of the performances felt too “try hard” versus authentic. all in all i’m happy that i got to see it before it’s closure but i was a little disappointed with the actual performance all together.

    Great show, bad start

by KLK on 4/26/22San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

The show was fantastic! However the venue was poorly set up to allow for fast enough security screening. We were in line at 7:40 but ended up getting through as the show started so had to wait to enter until after the fist song and find out middle seats in the dark which was unpleasant for all in the row.

Incredible night 2+ years in the making

by Pam M on 4/26/22San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

I purchased these tickets in 2019 for my teenage daughter’s birthday. The show was pushed back twice due to Covid. This touring cast is amazing!! We loved every minute of the show!! Their heart and sole shined through! They left it all on the stage! Thank you!! Thank you!! For making our night a memorable one!!

Great show- but not all the cast were 100%

by BijouNu on 4/25/22San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

I saw Rent for the first time in San Francisco 1999. It was the first touring company since the premiere on Broadway. That being said, I had high expectations for this performance. The set was right on point as well as the band. There were some cast standouts that really brought their A game and then some. Shafiq Hicks(Tom Collins), Javon King(Angel Schunard) and Aiyana Smash(Mimi Marquez) nailed their characters and numbers. Lu die Moe (Mauree Johnson) must have been under the weather. Her voice wasn’t up to the performance. It was most notable in the duet. “Take Me or Leave Me”. The song was clearly out of her range and while she attempted to carry on by singing an alternative melody, it fell very flat. Friends who saw the show the next night said the same thing. This would have been a good time to let the understudy step up. All and all it was still an amazing production that I’m happy to have had the opportunity to see, even though I had to wait 2 years to see due to the pandemic. Welcome back San Diego Civic Theater!!

    Underwhelming and Disappointing

by V Lee on 4/25/22San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

We've seen Rent more than 8 times, i'd guess. Farewell show was a real bummer. Starting the show with Light my Candle? What?! A mish-mash of music that doesn't tell the story or emotion that we love so much about the characters. Super bummer.

    Girls nights out

by Tea on 4/25/22San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

We wanted to see Rent because it will be no longer touring I guess so we wanted to see it before it left San Diego. I thought it was ok . Some parts better than some. Some of the actors we’re amazing & their voices as well. I guess it’s hard when you seen shows on Broadway in NYC my standards are high

    Waste of Time

by Filmcritic on 4/25/22San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

It was lively, but we couldn’t understand the words to the songs so had no idea what was going on. Still have no idea what the play was about. A waste of time for us.

    Great musical

by Steffi on 4/21/22Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

I enjoyed this musical most especially the 2nd part. Although, in the first part of the show, I thought the musical performances were a little too shrieky. The performers were all amazing and the individual performances were superb! Great musical overall.

    Fantastic show

by Kim N on 4/20/22Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

Saw Rent at the Dolby Theatre & it was wonderful! Super fun show, cast had so much energy, there were many laughs & I loved the music. I was so looking forward to this & it did not disappoint. So happy I got to experience this show & get to appreciate Jon Larson’s art live before the show run ended. Truly medicine for the soul.

    First Broadway Musical

by Kai on 4/19/22Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

Wow! Did not disappoint. The whole cast sounded so goooood. Aiyana Smash @aiyanasmash was smashingly great! She made me love all the songs she sang. She sounded better than the others who played Mimi. (I had to listen to the songs so I would be familiar with Rent before watching the show.)

    Great show horrible seats

by Kris on 4/19/22Dolby Theatre - Hollywood

Bought 2 tickets. Ticketmaster sold us seats that didn't exist, Dolby Theater had to make seats for us. We were seated in folding chairs on the corner, very horrible, looks like we were just squeezed in like squatters. Made the most of it and tried to just enjoy the show, show ended up to be great.
