getting in and out of Candlestick was surprisingly smooth, as was the way in which the gates were handled, from the security guys pacing the flow of the crowd to the very professional folks patting us down and the ushers. it appeared that the event coordinators had properly assessed the needs of this event and the anticipated crowd.
some of Real's international stars didn't make the trip up from the training camp at UCLA, but you expect that for a friendly, and enough world class players were on hand to make for a great exhibition of soccer. it was pretty darn cold out there for an Aug. 4, so i certainly appreciated the effort.
we were in the first row of the 2nd section of seats in LE27, and it was a constant wrestling match with the folks who obviously felt the railing 3' in front of our seats was free parking for amateur photographers with point and shoot cameras. we did have the benefit of the one usher in the entire bleachers who was earnestly trying to do his job though, windbreaker #1085, who should be commended, because he was not doing popular work.
generally the energy was great and the majority of the folks milling around were fun loving, but i will quickly bemoan a fact that caught me off guard. i'm used to the Club Level folks at AT&T park who haven't a clue what the fans' relationship should be to the ballgame, more concerned with getting to sit comfortably and check their emails for 3 hours than getting swept up in the energy of a live sporting event. i did not expect to encounter the "SIT DOWN!" crowd at Candlestick park for a soccer match between the top teams in Mexico and Europe. I've been to soccer matches in Europe, and both Men's and Women's World Cups on American soil, and nobody sat down, ever. in the 2nd half the crowd thickened and the energy built, and the calls from up the bleachers to sit down subsided, but the entire first half was spent missing pieces of the action due to the aforementioned amateur photographers standing in front of us and attempts to appease the people behind us calling for everyone to sit down.
this isn't live bowling folks. if you want to sit quietly and watch sports emotionally removed from the energy of the spectacle, stay home and flip channels.
