RAILROAD EARTH IN CONCERT:
Progressive bluegrass band Railroad Earth combines virtuosic musicianship, extensive improvisation, and psychedelic visuals to deliver a world-class concert experience that's rooted in tradition yet firmly forward-looking. The group's rootsy, Americana-infused sound takes on new dimensions at their live shows, where amplified mandolin, guitar, and lap steel combine to create a mind-blowing swirl of bluegrass instruments. The band totally rocks out as they bring tracks like "Elko" and the 15-minute "Like a Buddha" to life on tour, inspiring ear-to-ear grins and euphoric dancing among concertgoers.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
New Jersey-based Railroad Earth formed in 2010 around the songwriting of former From Good Homes frontman Todd Sheaffer. Under the guidance of manager Brian Ross, Sheaffer linked up with a group of talented bluegrass players, and the success of their initial jam sessions gave birth to Railroad Earth. Within several months the band had already released their debut album The Black Bear Sessions and performed at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, where their high-energy set knocked fans’ socks off and earned them a deal with Sugar Hill Records. In 2002 they released their sophomore album Bird In A House, supporting it with a string of boot-stomping performances that floored fans across the country, who began calling themselves “hobos” in honor of the band’s vintage Americana leanings. A string of popular albums followed throughout the ‘00s, and the band’s rigorous touring schedule in support of the releases established them as festival favorites. In 2014 Railroad Earth released their seventh album Last of the Outlaws, a critical success that led to a sold-out show at Red Rocks and a concert DVD release of the epic performance.

One of the best shows I have ever seen . Pure talent!!!
Getting to see a band on the caliber of Railroad Earth at the Culture Room is like heaven. The stage fills nearly a third of the room so no matter where you are in the Room you right near the stage (if it gets to be too much for you, you can go out to the open air bar). Lights and sound system are top notch and we have not even gotten to the band. Dangermuffin kicked things off with a good set topped of with Tim (RRE violin) joining them for their last two numbers. Then came two sets from RRE that were excellent from a Bird in the House start to a Long Way to Go close. The band plays joyfilled music and the crowd was with them every note of the two plus hours. Great band and a totally great night!
all i can say is they were awesome. the sound system was great , no too loud. great venue. i hope they come back!
This was an awesome show. Its great that they came back to South Florida. They played forever and my wife and I are still amped up from the show Friday night. Culture Room is a fun, intimate venue as well.
Hope they come again soon!! this is one of the best group of musicians around. the show was amazing from beginning to end.
RRE simply blew the doors off of the Pageant. I have seen these guys several times over the years (as well as being a big fan), and they delivered yet again with this performance. The overall energy level was very good, with the requisite tight, excellent playing I have come to expect as an RRE standard. The four star rating is more a reflection of my personal taste with regards to the song selection of the set lists, as opposed to the overall performance. Anyone that enjoys an electrified "string band" that plays with reckless abandon, music seeped in an Americana theme, at times delivered in a Grateful Dead-like cadence with deep instrumental jamming, I would suggest giving this group a try.
They have such a great sound, we danced all night.
I was not aware that this was not a traditional concert. I drove over two hours to watch Corey Smith, and he only got to sing a handful of songs! VERY VERY disappointed!!!
Mountain Stage is a radio show that is taped live and aired at a later date. It's unique because you sit the entire time, no getting up to dance. It features five artists primarily from folk, country and bluegrass genres. mountain stage is always a good time but especially this time, due to Railroad Earth. What an amazing band. I had wanted to see them live for years but the closest show they did was a festival and I'm not doing a festival. These gentlemen that make up RRE are incredible musicians several playing multiple instruments. Only got to hear them play four songs but it was still great. Best all around musicians on the stage the entire night. Low moment moment of the night, during Railroad Earth's performance, fans of "Corey Smith" (who also played the show) chanted his name.......Classless.
Mountain Stage was great! It was neat to see how the radio production went live (including the "on the air" and "applause" signs.) The artists were amazing, however I must say I was pretty disappointed with Rail Road Earth. I realize that the featured artist could only play five or six songs, but their performance was pretty sad. They played all new stuff, very slow stuff, and totally slowed down the energy of the crowd. Even people in the crowd were shouting out some of their classic hits....but not one was played. Overall, great experience. I just hope RRE has more energy at Del Fest!!
Mountain Stage has always been a great musical experience. Whether it be live on the radio or by going to the show!!
This show was incredible, these guys are truly talented. The German House was a great venue for an intimate show, I highly recommend these guys and the German House for a concert.
RRE really wows contiunuously. I have seen them before and they are just such a tremendously talented, fun band. There are 6 masters of their instruments on stage; everyone shreds/beats/plucks/fiddles the hell out of their instrument and it is amazing to be in the presence of them!
Penn's Peak is the most beautiful indoor place to see a concert. Its like being inside a ski lodge or a log cabin. I was surprised to hear that only 400-500 tickets were sold for this show. The place holds about 1800. There was plenty of room to move around, and it was easy to get up close, and see the band from many different vantage points. I was a little disappointed that the balcony was closed. This is usually my favorite place to see a show from. The staff told me that they needed to sell 700 tickets before they could open the balcony. Railroad Earth is a band beyond description. Some people may describe them as playing Bluegrass, or "Newgrass" music, but this is not true. They have a drummer, and they also are playing more electric instruments now (guitar, bass, etc). Their sound is evolving beyond their acoustic roots, and their new self titled album showcases this sound.
The thing is Todd, the singer, was obviously sick as a dog that night. Yet the other guys still kicked enough ass to more then make up for it. One of the best live acts around and actually have great songs which not all jambands do.
RailRoad Earth is a wonderful group. Penns Peak is a wonderful venue. Put the two together and you get one amazing show!!
Railroad Earth was really amazing. Northern Lights in Clifton Park was a weird location in a strip mall, but besides that, it was really awesome because it is relatively small and everyone can get pretty close to the band. Railroad Earth was great, and their opening band the Giving Tree was also a lot of fun. Good dancing music!
that's all I could bring myself to say for the first hour of the drive back to vermont after this show. Great venue despite the obscure location, great sound, and superb performers. They never fail to impress, and this time they iniciated the ride with some older folkier down home tunes, and then moved into some grass trance and played lots of newer stuff for the second set. Couldn't have asked for anything more.
Great venue and RRE was on their game to finish the tour. Great American Taxi was also sick.
A terrific show in a beautiful venue. Railroad Earth closed its winter tour here and did it in style.
