Rachel did not disappoint; it was a very interesting evening of politics, history and stories!
The event was amazing. We watch "The Racheal Maddow Show"regularly. Listening to her read from her book "Prequel"and the follow up interview brought the experience to life. Would go to see her again.
Good Introduction to her new book. Was really impressed at the detail of the (too) short recitation of the single chapter. Was sorry that her voice was going but expected on a book tour (and pre diagnosis of Covid). Would have preferred that cameras put her and host up on big screens. Too short. Could have listened all night.
Rachel’s mission has been completed in creating a beacon of light to illuminate the future.
Rachel was everything I and my partner expected. We were so very happy to be a part of the event. She was inspiring and knowledgeable as we all expected. But, the event space was not prepared to have the video of her on the side screens. Big disappointment. Most events have them now. Also, someone needs to get the elevators working in the parking structure. Only one elevator worked, and the exit in the parking structure was abominable.
Parking was easy and we saw our favorite Monday night commentator live and in color. It was NOT clear where we could sit; as we were all muled into the main floor seats and many people fell as they were pushed down the incline. We quickly sat at the top of the rows on the main floor but then had to get up each and every time someone had to get a drink.
Rachel is so interesting. She could easily be a history professor. I would take any class that she taught. She dives into the subject matter and then explains it in a way that is so interesting and easy to understand. She ties it into modern day, which makes it very relatable. She was better in person than she is on TV. And she is pretty darn good on TV! Thank you, Changing Hands, for bringing Rachel Maddow to Phoenix.
It was exciting to get the chance to see Rachel in person. I’ve been an admirer of hers for years, both through her MSNBC show and her podcasts Bag Man, Ultra and Deja News. Very few journalists/news people are as learned and articulate as she is. Couple that with a character and belief in humanity that shines in this event. I’m thankful that MSNBC was instrumental in enabling her to extend her career into creating podcasts and books. In my mind, she is a national treasure.
It was very annoying and frustrating that the interview was not displayed on the large projection screens as that theatre is so cavernous and non-conducive to a pleasant viewing experience as you cannot see any of the person’s facial features, expressions or subtle reactions to questions, etc. unless you are sitting in the front few rows. It makes for a total lack of engagement and intimacy with the speaker. The content was fine but this venue sucks, especially without the big screen projections. We’re so disappointed that Changing Hands chose this venue which is just a depressing venue without any esthetic value at all! Do better next time or we won’t be back!
Wish we could have had more time with her. Rachel is awesome, bright.. and entertaining. Invite her to come back!!
AUDIO speakers at the wings or outer seats were not loud enough to hear everything. This was NOT the first "Center Stage Speaker"show that has happened at this "Auditorium". A simple DB receiver at the outside wall midway could give you the info to "turn up the volume"to some "known"standard when the seats were all full.
Rachel’s book, Prequel, is a lesson in history— how fascism came to be, AND how we can combat it today. She discussed how Surprising it is that Henry Ford was a key fascist propagandist In the US, and how Hitler had his mug on his office wall as he admired him so much. Over 4,000 people attended and it was well worth hearing her lead this discussion. Wake up people.
I enjoyed seeing Rachel but her interviewer, Ted Simons, could have been better. He didn’t choose good audience questions to end the night with. He could have chosen questions in line with the topic, but instead he chose really inane ones. Disappointing….
It was a good event. A couple of tech things: * the lighting wasn't complicated, The board operator missed his cue left the person introducting the event in the dark for a noticeably extended time. * Why wasn't the event projected on the screen? The room is too large not to provide that enhancement , plus there were lots of seniors in the room with compromised eyesight, me being one. The venue was very cold. The woman's accessible toilet has a broken seat. Please place a work order.
Rachel is smart, articulate and makes a deadly serious topic compelling. Great experience.
This evening was well worth attending, a presentation by Rachel Maddow sponsored by Changing Hands Bookstore. She was personable, honest, and a pleasure to listen to. The evening was well planned & thoughtful.
Having listened to Rachel's podcast, Ultra, I was familiar with a lot of what she discussed. But still enjoyed her deep dive into history and the importance (unspoken) of learning from our past. However, I felt that the giant screens still having ads running while she was at the podium was distracting. I would have loved to see some images related to her talk (like Henry Ford). Maybe also projecting Rachel and the moderator so people far from the stage could see them better. Loved that she gave out books. Entrance into the venue ran smoothly.
My only complaint is it was too short. I can listen to Rachel for hours! She’s amazing.
Fascinating outline of her new book,”Prequel”, as reviewed in Rachel’s own words. Maddow is as charismatic and informed in person as she appears on TV. Her study of the politics in the period mid-to-late ‘30’s and ‘40’s, and the rise of naziism and fascism, is an apt warning for today’s political climate.
She was great. Should have been longer! More time. More time
