Queens of the Stone Age Background

Queens of the Stone Age got its start in 1996 in Palm Desert, California. Originally, the band called itself Gamma Ray. However, a German metal group already had this name, so Queens of the Stone Age was born. This name came from the nickname of Josh Homme's previous band, Kyuss. The band's musical style is influenced by many rock and metal genres, with macho and German rock styles commonly attributed to it. Later albums incorporate electronic and dance music influences. Queens of the Stone Age had their first concert in Seattle, Washington at the OK Hotel on November 20, 1997. Once they released their self-titled album Queens of the Stone Age, they started touring in 1998. They had their big break when they released their second album, Rated R, in 2000 and got the opportunity to open for Foo Fighters, The Smashing Pumpkins and other high-profile bands. An invite for Ozzfest 2000 came shortly after.

I cannot believe how long these guys played, how hard they rocked, or how absolutely awesome they sounded.

qotsa is a great live show

by alexnewt on 3/23/11Center Stage Theatre - Atlanta

i am a huge qotsa fan. this was my first time to see them as a whole live. these guys have an uncanny stage presence, especially the front man, Josh Homme. i dont think this show topped Them Crooked Vultures, but it was a lot of fun. They played a very long set, of which i enjoyed every second. The venue is great too, stadium seating was close to the stage yet allowed for a comfortable place to rock out.

Double encore for the win. Queens of the Stone Age put on a great show. Played their entire first album as well as playing TWO encores. The sound at the Ryman was amazing. I would definitely pay to see them there again.

by wildwingo on 3/22/11Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Okay you know some bands are good on recordings but not live. Some bands are loud and put on a good show but not technically good live. QOTSA were good, loud, technically flawless and ROCKED!!!!!!!!!

    QotSA delivers!

by SnowLynx on 3/22/11Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

This show was a great mix of the old stuff, which they're touring in support of, and a few newer things sprinkled in. Josh was fun and gracious, definitely grateful to the fans, and put so much energy out there...it was amazing. The other band members did not disappoint; they were all up to the level of the audience, and played some amazing tunes.

    Stones of the Queen Age

by HaZaa on 3/22/11Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Totally unbelievable, They not only played the entire first album, But also played 2 standing ovations, for a set that was about 2 hours long. They got a kick out of the ryman crowd, and were really on point the whole night, cutting up with the crown telling us stories about droppin acid, and all kinds of shit. we even got a few gems i.e. The fun machine took a shit and died, Monsters in the parasol, lots of old favorites. Truly a night to remember.

    QOTSA

    by krl1969 on 3/22/11Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Incredible show! QOTSA performed their debut album front to back. They finished with several great tunes from various albums. The crowd was energetic and responsive. The band came out for 3 encores, which was unusual for the Ryman, (at least in my experience there). Sound was incredible, as to be expected for this venue. Definitely one of the tightest bands I've ever seen.

    Amazing Powerful Concert

    by 1designguy on 3/22/11Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

I found out late about the Ryman show but I'm so glad I I didn't let the ticket location stop me. Know that when Ticketmaster advises "obstructed view" in the Ryman, they mean it. First floor, back row and seats one and two along the isle (MF-3, row Z, seats 2-1) not only have columns between the seats and the stage but the balcony also blocks viewing anything above the artist chest making your clear view impossible when in a standing crowd (SURE, like you're going to sit through the Queens). The history and acoustics of the Ryman along with the power and punch of QOTSA was a magical combination. A packed house crowd of loyal fans being energized by their music and singing along made for just the right atmosphere. While security can always be a distraction at any Ryman rock show, it didn't take long to get so caught up in the show that it no longer even entered your mind (unless you grooved on out into the isle a bit). No matter what your location nor your knowledge of the QOTSA music, it is a worthy show sure to leave you a fan when leaving. I say, the smaller the venue, the better. In this case, the Ryman was JUST right (especially after I moved around a bit to see better). I find it hard to believe that Josh in any of his musical incarnations isn't a household name. If he had the stamina, I would pay big money to see him play a double concert in QOTSA and Them Crooked Vultures. I can dream... Thanks for a great show and some excellent memories.
