About

Primus was founded in 1984 in El Sobrante, California by Les Claypool and guitarist Todd Huth, who were later joined by drummer Jay Lane. Beginning as an underground act, the band slowly gained notoriety and critical acclaim after their records Sailing the Seas of Cheese (1991) and Pork Soda (1993) both went Platinum, along with their records, Wynona's Big Brown Beaver (1996), Sailing the Seas of Cheese (Deluxe Edition) (2013) and Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble (2015), all three of which earned Grammy nominations. After the release of their record Antipop in 1999, the group disbanded but reformed as a touring entity in 2010 and began releasing music again soon after; Primus has released nine studio albums in total. The present lineup features Claypool on bass, Larry “Ler” LaLonde on guitar and Tim “Herb” Alexander on drums. Primus have delighted audiences all over the world with their oddball lyricism and out-of-the-box approach to music for over 40 years, and continue to be dedicated to bringing their innovative discography on the road.

  • Primus!

by baztacular on 8/6/10Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Primus was awsome as expected. The Dead Kenny G's opened and were awsome. Gogol bordello was not really my thing but were very cool. And the band in the bar, The Bridge from Baltimore Maryland, rocked the house before and after the show.

This was my first Primus show. The band rocked. Les Claypool is a musical genius!

  • always entertaining

by boomboompants on 8/6/10Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Primus is an excellent band! Unlike many musicians today the band still cares about appearances and always has a great stage setup. I give the show 5 stars despite some idiot in the crowd pissing Claypool off by throwing a beer bottle on stage. It's clear that Ol' Les has very little patience for that sort of nonsense and who can blame him. I think it affected the show for him but he went on for the rest of the crowd who would have gladly thrown the bottle thrower out had we found him. Sadly I wonder if the band will ever come back to Columbus. But if Primus is coming to a city near you I just have one word for you: GO!

  • Primus really did suck. Seriously..

by Juicemannnn on 8/6/10Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - ColumbusRating: 1 out of 5

Gogol Bordello was the most annoying band I've ever seen live. They played wayyyy to long, longer than Primus. When Primus finally got on stage I was so pumped, but then two songs in someone throws a plastic beer bottle on stage, that didn't hit anything. Les stops the song and rants for awhile, basically acting like a prima donna. They play a few more songs, and he rants some more about how he doesn't like touring with Primus because these things never happen in his other projects.. The encore was Jerry was a racecar driver, and that was it. I really felt cheated, my roundtrip was almost 5 hours long just to see them. I spent over 100$ for this, totally not worth it. I've seen Les's solo band a few months ago and it was much better than this show. His choice in the setlist was poor, played the most boring Primus songs I can think of, wheres the fan service?? Your fans made you and you punish us all because one asshole threw something, grow up its rock and roll!!! I got a feeling Primus might not stay together much longer, sadly Les's ego is overly inflated now. It really hurt my opinion of him, I don't think I'd want to see them again...

  • les paul and eugene hutz...same stage...same time

    by gg13 on 8/6/10Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

as usual, gogol bordello played a great set.. maybe a bit more subdued than their other shows i've seen but great all the same. many songs, maybe most, were from the new album. standout songs were tribal connection, break the spell, and trans continental hustle. i'm partial to the underdog world strike album and was glad to hear three picks from that. i'm not well versed in the primus catalog but managed to have a good time all the same. some moron threw a beer bottle at les which was not appreciated and seemed to cast a shadow on the remainder of the show. les tried not to punish all of us and was kind enough to resume playing american life a few songs later. a 1 song encore was a bit short but that's what you get sometimes. the crowd (minus one moron) was great. everybody seemed to have a good time and were friendly to each other.

The openers Dead Kenny G's and Gogol Bordello were excellent, and amazing and I suppose I would not have seen them otherwise. Primus or I should say Les Claypool's performance on the other hand was forgettable at best. Les continually told the crowd that he didn't like touring with Primus and pitched a fit over a plastic beer bottle that could or could not have been staged. The notion went through my mind, why would Les bother with Primus if he hates it so much? Well the answer is abundantly clear. Ticket sales. As Les Claypool or any of his offshoot projects he wouldn't be playing the LC pavilion or would be an opener to Gogol Bordello. This way he can make the most money out of any show this summer and put on pathetic mediocre performances. I was a huge Primus/Claypool fan to this point and had plans to buy more albums/dvds. This has changed my mind. Good work Les, embrace your hippie 'we don't care about anything' crowd because that's all you'll have left after this tour.

  • primus in their prime...

by smaureen on 8/6/10Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

Great show, the band is still as tight as ever.... even though Claypool got his panties all up in a twist over the beer bottle episode... fame has a price, but the fans shouldn't have to pay it... next time, grace us with another encore or two... don't reprimand us (again) with playing just one. overall, great weather and super fun show.... all 3 bands included. :)

  • Les Claypool needs to chill

by Jaxxxx on 8/6/10Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - ColumbusRating: 2 out of 5

I saw Les Claypool in Boston a few months prior to this show. At this show, like that one, a single person threw a bottle on stage. Apparently, Les Claypool is not capable of maturely handling anything perceived as an insult. Even when it's coming from just one person out of the thousands there that paid good money and took the time to come see him. Like the Boston show, Les dwelled on this for an uncomfortably long period of time. In Boston, the show ended right there and left everyone to go home feeling bad that they were so excited for someone that turned out to be such a jerk. This didn't play out exactly the same way, but similar. He stopped the song he was playing and refused to continue. He then brought the incident up nearly and hour later, called Primus fans meatheads in so many words, and claimed the fans of his other bands have never done this. It's just something about the "testosterone fueled" Primus fans as he put it. This was a lie, intended to make the entire audience feel bad because of the actions of a single person, as the incident in Boston did happen with one of his other bands. The encore was only one song, which I couldn't help but to attribute to Les's bitterness. The only redeeming aspect of this show was Gogol Bordello who were fun and positive and played fantastic music. I love Primus, but I couldn't help to dwell the whole time on the fact that I had given Les Claypool a second chance, but he proceeded to reiterate the fact he is an ungrateful, arrogant, and overly emotional jerk.

  • prmus=awesome

    by adra214 on 8/6/10Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

this show was totally awesome. my only complaint is the guy who threw a beer bottle on stage and put in les in a less-than-enthusiastic mood all night. not cool, dude. they still put on a sweet show, though...i wish it would've lasted a little longer!

  • Primus needs to grow up

by Mfisher on 8/6/10Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - ColumbusRating: 2 out of 5

Gogol Bordello was phenominal! They were pumped and full of energy and spirit. They really wanted to give the audience a good time which they did! Primus, however really disappointed me. One person threw a beer bottle onto the stage and that is in no way ok at all. Les griped about it which is totally understandable. He should have said something about it and let it go at that. Instead the show lacked energy and later on he mentioned the incident again and went on and on about it. They finished the set and for the encore only played 1 song!! It was so irritating. He let ONE bad person spoil it for everyone. We paid $45 dollars for our tickets each and were extremely disappointed at the lack of professionalism.

  • Primus with Gogol Bordello

by Anonymous on 8/6/10Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

Was a killer show, but I wish Les would have played the whamola longer and better. Everything sounded great though.

  • Primus/Gogol Bordello

    by akhweye43 on 8/6/10Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

An EXCELLENT show at a great venue. Most unfortunate part was some drunk lobbing a beer bottle at Les, therefore shortening our encore to 1 tune... The rest was FANTASTIC

  • by Anonymous on 8/6/10Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

Primus is always terrific, and tonight was no exception. However, Les Claypool got irritated shortly into the set when someone threw a beer bottle on stage. I can't say I blame him, I'd be pissed too. He spent the rest of the show complaining about the incident, wishing herpes on the person who threw it. The show ended rather abruptly, although they did come out to do Jerry Was a Race Car Driver as an encore. I had never heard Gogol Bordello, but they were awesome. They have a very unique and exotic sound. I read that their genre is Gypsy Punk, and that describes them perfectly.

  • Gogol...ENERGY!

by nubiankitty on 8/6/10The Williamsburg Waterfront - BrooklynRating: 5 out of 5

The NYC skyline was such an amazaing backdrop for the high energy, fun-packed, dance-your-ass-off Gogol Bordello/Primus concert! It was my second Gogol concert and I was so amazed and jazzed once again!

  • How could you go wrong with Primus and Gogol?

by urbnoracle on 8/5/10The Williamsburg Waterfront - BrooklynRating: 5 out of 5

Though the event was abit on the early side, it was fantastic. The view was incredible, the temperature, perfect; and the music, sublime! Not to mention the Australian Wine offered at the outdoor drink and food stands. Atmosphere coupled with acoustics coupled with talent made for a perfect Friday evening. :)

  • Primus Sucks!

by Silenceee on 8/4/10Time Warner Cable Amphitheater at Tower City - ClevelandRating: 4 out of 5

I missed the Dead Kenny G's but Gogol Bordello and Primus were superb! My only complaint was the Venue stunk like stanky pot.

  • Primus sucks

by Jstrife on 8/4/10Time Warner Cable Amphitheater at Tower City - ClevelandRating: 5 out of 5

The Dead Kenny G's started it off with an entertaining mix of comedy and jazz jam band punk. I really enjoyed watching them and their amazing saxophone player. Next up was Gogol Bordello. They pretty much rocked...period. I never saw a group so pumped up at a concert, they really gave it to the crowd. I think I can safely say they are the best gypsy punk band ever. It was my first ever Primus show so i didn't know what to expect really. I came to see musicianship at it's finest and they did not disappoint. In fact they are so much better live it's unbelievable. Three of the finest musicians in the past 20 years in my opinion. My mind was absolutely blown when I saw Les play. He is a god. My only gripe was there were a few technical hiccups with the first bass Les played with and he had to stop the show and get a new one. I fear that is the reason that they did not play "Tommy the Cat" or "My name is Mud". I was very disappointed when they did not play their two most famous songs but overall I loved it and I will definitely see them again.

  • Primus Reigns Superior

by BillyGreg on 8/4/10Time Warner Cable Amphitheater at Tower City - ClevelandRating: 4 out of 5

Awesome show by Primus as always. Each member of Primus is totally amazing and each could play the doors off anyone individually. Good choice of songs as well. Opening act, The Dead Kenny G's was great. but too short Gogol Bordello was not a good fit for this show. Each Gogol Bordello song sounded the same and they played way too long. Should have gave more time to first act.

  • Primus Never Disppoints

by ErocFury on 8/4/10Time Warner Cable Amphitheater at Tower City - ClevelandRating: 3 out of 5

Let me start off by stating that Primus is my favorite band. I have seen them over 20 times in the last 18 years, and Les in some other capacity countless other times, so I would say that I set the bar high when it comes to Primus. That said, they never disappoint, but I would rate the show in Cleveland as an average Primus show. There was a equipment malfunction with Les' bass during "Jerry" which is completely out of his control and I can forgive, but you couple that with a rare mistake by Les that caused him to have to restart "Mrs. Blaileen" and the mere 90 min. set, and your left with a very average show, especially for those of us diehards that paid full ticket price. I expected a little more after a 6 year absence in Cleveland. I will say that the addition, or re-addition if you will, of new/old drummer Jay Lane seemed to be a great fit. The band seemed to have great chemistry and did not skip a beat, no pun intended, with Jay on the kit and without Tim Alexanders presence. It was great to hear songs from the Brown album which I hadn't heard live in over a decade, but I would have loved to have heard something from Antipop in which there was none. Ler (Larry Lalonde) seemed to be engaged a lot more which sometimes tends to be lacking at Primus shows, so that was an added plus. Overall, I would again call the show average on my Primus scale, only because I have seen many a great show from them and I am probably a tough of a critic. At least they didn't see a Michael Moore film before playing this time, so their mood seemed to be pretty positive. :) I would love to hear some new material sometime soon....Please!!! Yes I am begging. :) It was great to see them again, and I hope there isn't another 6 year hiatus for Cleveland.
