About

Primus was founded in 1984 in El Sobrante, California by Les Claypool and guitarist Todd Huth, who were later joined by drummer Jay Lane. Beginning as an underground act, the band slowly gained notoriety and critical acclaim after their records Sailing the Seas of Cheese (1991) and Pork Soda (1993) both went Platinum, along with their records, Wynona's Big Brown Beaver (1996), Sailing the Seas of Cheese (Deluxe Edition) (2013) and Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble (2015), all three of which earned Grammy nominations. After the release of their record Antipop in 1999, the group disbanded but reformed as a touring entity in 2010 and began releasing music again soon after; Primus has released nine studio albums in total. The present lineup features Claypool on bass, Larry “Ler” LaLonde on guitar and Tim “Herb” Alexander on drums. Primus have delighted audiences all over the world with their oddball lyricism and out-of-the-box approach to music for over 40 years, and continue to be dedicated to bringing their innovative discography on the road.

  • Not the band I remember

by OldSchoool on 8/8/10Ryman Auditorium - NashvilleRating: 1 out of 5

I saw Primus about 12 or 13 yrs ago and thought this might be a good throwback concert in the sacred ground Ryman Auditorium. I really was disappointed they didn't play more of their bigger hits or it could be that I'm now too old for this music and they have went a different direction. I only knew two songs out of the entire set. I could be wrong but if your favorites come from the Pork Soda and Sailing the Sea of Cheese era of this band you could be disappointed also. The opening act was horrendous...Dead Kenny G's but this could be that I have lost touch but they were bad on a lot of levels.

  • It wasn't just a show.. It was an experience

    by Zach420 on 8/8/10Ryman Auditorium - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

From the time the Dead Kenny G's took the stage to the encore performances of Over the Falls and Mr Knowitall from Primus the feeling of energy in the Ryman Auditorium was unbelievable. I've wanted to see the band that got beat by Wyld Stallyns in the Fourth Annual San Dimas Battle of the Bands back in 1991, and for being the second baddest band in the land.. Primus still sux ;)

  • Primussucks but Eagles Club needs to improve

    by Mothball on 8/8/10Eagles Club/The Rave/Eagles Ballroom - MilwaukeeRating: 4 out of 5

Primus came through in classic style. They brought out some fantastic tunes like "John the Fisherman" and "Golden Boy", and did a sweet cover of Tom Waits' "Big in Japan". They're visuals were great too, with two huge astronauts looming in the background that had videos playing in their helmets. The reason I only gave this show a 4 star rating was because of the venue. While The Eagles Club was visually appealing, it was hot as hell and the sound was muddy at times. Couldn't really discern anything the bassist for The Dead Kenny G's was playing. Still, a fantastic show and if you haven't seen Primus live yet, do it before they dissolve again!

  • Primus made me feel like it was 1993!

    by Spooky5376 on 8/8/10Ryman Auditorium - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

We saw Les Claypool just a few months ago by himself and thought he was amazing, but Friday's Primus show topped it. The chemistry between the guys was obvious, you could see how much fun they were having playing together. Les' bass playing was, as expected, perfect, but the often underrated Larry LaLonde was exceptional as well. Les and Larry have reunited with original Primus drummer Jay Lane and just like Les and Larry, he is an amazing musician. If the show could have gone on for a few more hours I would have happily dehydrated and had a blast! Thank you Primus for rocking the Ryman like it was 1993 and showing this younger generation how its done!

  • Sailing the Seas of Cheese....

    by LeelandG on 8/8/10Eagles Club/The Rave/Eagles Ballroom - MilwaukeeRating: 5 out of 5

Concert was sick, all around good show. Even the Dead Kenny G's were amazing and related very well to Primus's demographic. The concert was also suprisingly diferse, there were many metal heads, jam band lovers, and all sorts of people with different musical tastes that clashed with the concert. It was also probably one of the sweatiest concerts I have been to as well(shirt was completely soaked in many peoples bodily fluids). Primus' set was amazing! The two inflatable spacemen were awesome, plus the projections that were on them were a nice touch and usually persisted with the song they played. I was really impressed to see less play his Cigarbox Bass, and the Whamola. I thought i'd never get a chance to see him play that at this concert at all. But overall Primus was a killer show that made my summer complete!

  • Primus At The Rave

    by ursusaltered on 8/8/10Eagles Club/The Rave/Eagles Ballroom - MilwaukeeRating: 5 out of 5

  • not bad i guess

    by Sumpty on 8/8/10Eagles Club/The Rave/Eagles Ballroom - MilwaukeeRating: 4 out of 5

Les + co. was in good raw form saturday night, although it seemed odd they did not play some of the old classics, tommy the cat, harold of the rocks, nature boy,sgt.baker-to name of few,but it was well worth it to bounce around again with the my friends(like we did 20yrs ago)--great sound, nice stage-well do it again someday!!!

  • Primus rocked the house!!!!!

by Captfantasy on 8/7/10Ryman Auditorium - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

These guys are amazing. Great music by great musicians. The last time I saw them was at Lollapalooza in 1993 at the Starwood Amphitheater and they kicked it. The Ryman shook hard last night. I hope they make a new album and come back soon. Primus rules.

  • More perfect than seemed possible

by recordingfil on 8/7/10Ryman Auditorium - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Primus (aka Incredible band) @ the Ryman Auditorium (aka best venue in Nashville) gives you...an absolutely amazing concert! They are obviously playing the songs that the fans want to hear. Very heavy on Frizzle Fry & Seas of Cheese albums with the highlights of other albums thrown in. It was great. Performance, Crowd & Sound was perfect. Woulda liked to have heard Wynonna's song since we were in Nashville, but guess they needed to save something for next year

  • by ninimay on 8/7/10Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

GREAT SHOW!!! the only drawback were the ignorant people up front that kept throwing things and upsetting the band......

  • Primus was an amazing time!!!

by OneLoveHoopin on 8/7/10Ryman Auditorium - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

We had a blast! Primus was sooo good and so was the venue!

by imthepeanut on 8/7/10Ryman Auditorium - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

The venue was fantastic. The people were friendly. The opening band, The Dead Kenny G's, blew me away. Primus was unbelievable and sounded great!! The staff at the Ryman are top notch.

  • Primus at the Rymann was AWESOME!

  • Les is back where he belongs!

    by Doodlebug74 on 8/7/10Ryman Auditorium - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Primus absolutely blew us away. Every song was amazing & sounded incredible. Worth every penny. The video playing on the 2 inflatable astronauts was awesome. Anyone who has ever been a fan of Primus needs to see this show! They played all the great songs & they sounded better than ever.

  • Glorious and Majestic!

by bigwoolz on 8/7/10Ryman Auditorium - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

First let me say this...The opening act (The Dead Kenny G's) was phenomenal. I immediately staggered to the merch table and bought there album...just go buy it (disappointment is not an option). Ah yes, although the classic "Primus Sucks" rolled off the tongue better than most handshake introductions...the trio was seething pure, unadulterated majesty. The Rymann definitely kept things intimate and the sound there has never been anything short of legendary. My seat was touching the stage, so i got punished with aural and ocular waves of sheer delight all night. It was perfect. The guys sounded amazing and it was nice to see some worthy tunes finally make it to our fabled "Music City". I will try to catch them in a month in ATL at the Tabernacle...another beautiful hall. Great work Primus...I am (and will be for a while) truly satisfied.

  • A hell of a time

by KamikazeFairie on 8/7/10Ryman Auditorium - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Primus was awesome, but that is a given. One of the great delights was the opening band The Dead Kenny G's. They were hilarious, and phenomenal. Go see this show for sure.

  • Primus with Gogol Bordello

by sndbmd on 8/7/10Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Gogol Bordello FAR exceeded my expectations! I could have watched them all night!

  • awesome venue!

by BohAMYan on 8/6/10Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

I really loved the venue, first off. Considering we traveled four hours to see Primus & Gogol Bordello, we were really happy with the area. Primus was great of course, but it felt a bit short because they played only one encore. Still better than nothing though! And it was an awesome show. My favorite part: Gogol Bordello. One of the most intense live shows I've ever seen and I was no where remotely close to the stage. SO much fun. And they even had a surprise appearance during Primus which, I remember telling my boyfriend afterward, my cheeks were hurting so bad from smiling...

  • Gogol Bordello was fantastic

by Anonymous on 8/6/10Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Loved the show! We absolutely loved it. Gogol Bordello is amazing and they are so talented.
