About

Primus was founded in 1984 in El Sobrante, California by Les Claypool and guitarist Todd Huth, who were later joined by drummer Jay Lane. Beginning as an underground act, the band slowly gained notoriety and critical acclaim after their records Sailing the Seas of Cheese (1991) and Pork Soda (1993) both went Platinum, along with their records, Wynona's Big Brown Beaver (1996), Sailing the Seas of Cheese (Deluxe Edition) (2013) and Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble (2015), all three of which earned Grammy nominations. After the release of their record Antipop in 1999, the group disbanded but reformed as a touring entity in 2010 and began releasing music again soon after; Primus has released nine studio albums in total. The present lineup features Claypool on bass, Larry “Ler” LaLonde on guitar and Tim “Herb” Alexander on drums. Primus have delighted audiences all over the world with their oddball lyricism and out-of-the-box approach to music for over 40 years, and continue to be dedicated to bringing their innovative discography on the road.

  • Bands were great. Beer throwing, not so much.

    by Equuleus42 on 8/13/10Red Rocks Amphitheatre - MorrisonRating: 3 out of 5

Seeing Primus: Awesome. Seeing Primus play with Gogol Bordello and the Dead Kenny G's: Even more awesome. Having some drunk person throw a full cup of beer at me from a few rows up so that it made my hair, back and legs soaking wet and sticky: Priceless.

  • Venue Provided Little Pre-Show Info

by Aloyisus on 8/13/10The Williamsburg Waterfront - BrooklynRating: 1 out of 5

Although Primus was the headliner, me & my guest were actually there to see opening act Gogol Bordello. While the tickets clearly stated a 6pm start time(door open at), there was no info to be found ANYWHERE when the bands might actually be going on. I've been going to concerts in NYC for MANY years, and NEVER has a rock show began at 6pm...outdoors, on a beautiful summer night. We figured getting to the venue at 7pm would give us plenty of time. arriving at about 7:20 due to slow subways, we were treated to Gogol Bordello's LAST song as we walked into the venue!!! True, we were late according to the time on the ticket, but to anyone who has attended a show in NYC can attest, RARELY does an act go on at the stated time. If this was to be the case for this show, there should have been somewhere to go to find out that info...any info. There was none. A poor job was done organizing this show.

  • Gogol Bordello should be headlining at Red Rocks!

    by Scooby671 on 8/13/10Red Rocks Amphitheatre - MorrisonRating: 4 out of 5

Red Rocks is always awesome but last night was a really beautiful night. Gogol Bordello put on a spectacular performance but I think Primus was a little average--perfomance-wise. Though they did have those cool, giant astronauts. Primus has amazing guitar-playing and musicians but, to me, they're a band that's good to chill out with and do drugs, if you're into that. Unfortunately, I'm not so I didn't enjoy it as much as the people around me that were stoned. :o) I may be a little biased, though, because Gogol Bordello is one of my favorites and I would have enjoyed them being the headliner and playing longer. And they are so high energy, I have a lot of fun when they're on versus Primus, when I just kinda go to sleep.

  • Primus Sucks

by CarltonFiskRox on 8/13/10Red Rocks Amphitheatre - MorrisonRating: 4 out of 5

Awesome show. Would have liked a few more Primus tunes and few less Bordello tunes though.

  • Primus Sucks!!

by Suzyquzy on 8/13/10Red Rocks Amphitheatre - MorrisonRating: 5 out of 5

Best show I have ever seen at Red Rocks!! Loved it!!

  • primus, genius as always

by cdubu on 8/13/10Uptown Theater - Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

u can never go wrong with primus. the air was broken in the theater & the show was sold out so the heat was miserable. but when primus hit the stage it didnt matter. gogol bordello put on an extremely unique & energetic performance. & also opening was a band called the dead kenny g's who was great. but nothing can compare to the great les claypool & co.

  • Unbelievable show

by tweidman on 8/13/10Red Rocks Amphitheatre - MorrisonRating: 5 out of 5

Dead Kenny G's were awesome. Gogol Bordello was amazing. Their energy was intense. And Primus played an excellent set. Lots of jamming. Just an epic set. Red rocks is one of the best venues I've ever been to. Highly recommended.

The Dead Kenny G's were inspired and a great and entertaining act. I did not care for Gogol Bordello they were like musical "Wallpaper" it was the same pattern over and over again. They seemed more appropriate in a bar somewhere as a jam band but I don't suppose there is a stage big enough in a dive bar to accommodate their large cast. PRIMUS, on the other hand, was excellent! The show was varied and intense from start to finish. Les Claypool is the greatest bassist alive today. Could not have enjoyed them more.

  • Yes!

by Gregdor on 8/13/10Red Rocks Amphitheatre - MorrisonRating: 5 out of 5

What a great show! I thought it was one of the most creative and interested shows I had been to at Red Rocks.

  • Best show!!!!!

by Hockeyind on 8/13/10Red Rocks Amphitheatre - MorrisonRating: 5 out of 5

All I can say is WOW! This is the BEST show I have ever been too! Everything was perfect, the temp, the scenery, the people and PRIMUS!! I was amazed from the get go. Dead Kenny G's were really good, Gogol was awesome as usual. Then there is Primus...... I can't even put it in words.... My face was melted by the most amazing sounds ever made..... LES CLAYPOOL is a pure GENIUS!

  • primus sucks!

by courtneycc on 8/13/10Red Rocks Amphitheatre - MorrisonRating: 5 out of 5

Primus was awesome, as always. I missed the first band. Gogol Bordello was cool, but played too long. I just wanted to see Primus!

  • Primus Sucks

by psychopet on 8/13/10Red Rocks Amphitheatre - MorrisonRating: 5 out of 5

This was the best show I have ever seen, although it was my first show at red rocks, which in itself is AWESOME. I am forever a Gogol Bordello fan now too. That is all I have to say.

  • Les Claypool makes it worth going to see

    by pdj1997 on 8/13/10Red Rocks Amphitheatre - MorrisonRating: 5 out of 5

Primus was awesome. Gogol Bordello was ok. DKG was good.

  • Primus and Kenny G's were awesome!

    by DEADHEAD94 on 8/13/10Red Rocks Amphitheatre - MorrisonRating: 4 out of 5

The show started with the Dead Kenny G's, and they did very well, i enjoyed how well they warmed us up. Next was Gogol Bordello. They were pretty bad. The beats were ok, and the violinist was very cool. But most the time i couldn't understand half the stuff they said. And when i could understand them, they were off key and sounded horrid. I would never recommend seeing them singly. Primus came up after them, and they did AWESOME! I would recommend seeing Les play any day! At the end of the night, i couldn't hear, couldn't speak, and i was soar from dancing my ass off! So it was a great show!

  • Primus/Gogol Bordello Was an experience

by JTnickname on 8/13/10Red Rocks Amphitheatre - MorrisonRating: 5 out of 5

Primus was headliner...and rightfully so. Yet the energy wasn't near what Gogol Bordello had established. Gogol Bordello was unbelievable. The energy was mindblowing and at the same time it was impossible to stand still. Don't get me wrong, I do love Primus, and their performance was excellent, It was kind of anti-climactic. The opening act was The Dead Kenny G's and the surprised the heck out of me, Just a 3 piece; drums, bass & sax. The drummer also played the vibes and kicked ass. The sax player, Skerik, is a mad man. His sax is hooked up to effects and he comes up with some awesome sounds. One hell of a night.

  • Gogol Bordello Stole Show

    by Chris925 on 8/13/10Red Rocks Amphitheatre - MorrisonRating: 4 out of 5

I was not expecting a lot from the opening act and was initially not impressed with the first couple of songs. However, I soon realized that Gogol Bordello had some talent! The melodies were beautiful, the singing was soulful, and the blend of the guitar with violin and accordian created a unique and original sound. The band played for at least an hour and a half and kept up their stage presence through the whole show. As for Primus, I was dissappointed. I have seen Les Claypool with Primus, Gabby La La, and some of his other side projects and I would have to say it was my least favorite performance. They chose to play some of the most well-known but overplayed and boring Primus songs during their stage set. I don't know whether it seemed like a let down because Gogol Bordello played beforehand or because Les seemed tired and uninterested. Nonetheless, still a huge Les Claypool fan and will gladly pay to see him again and again. His personality, uniqueness, and of course, bass playing skills are amazing!

  • Primus, Gogol Brodello, The dead kenny G's

The concert left my friends and I with amazing unforgettable memories!

  • Primus at Red Rocks

    by Madchen89 on 8/13/10Red Rocks Amphitheatre - MorrisonRating: 5 out of 5

The show was incredible. All three bands performed extremely well. My favorite part of the whole show was when all three bands performed a song together. Everyone's stage performance was spectacular and i think that made the show as great as it was!

  • Primus Delivered!!!!!!

by bigdandog on 8/13/10Ryman Auditorium - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

I've seen Primus 3 times over the last 15 years and this was the best. They are alway great. The music is dead on fantastic. Les and Larry seemed to have a great time, interracted with the audience, and really showed appreciation for a devoted fan crowd!

  • Primus rocked

    by 2Che on 8/13/10Red Rocks Amphitheatre - MorrisonRating: 5 out of 5

Last night show at Red Rocks was truly amazing Primus bought it. Bordello, played about 3 songs to many but had amazing energy. Dead Kenny G's excellent as well
