Primus was founded in 1984 in El Sobrante, California by Les Claypool and guitarist Todd Huth, who were later joined by drummer Jay Lane. Beginning as an underground act, the band slowly gained notoriety and critical acclaim after their records Sailing the Seas of Cheese (1991) and Pork Soda (1993) both went Platinum, along with their records, Wynona's Big Brown Beaver (1996), Sailing the Seas of Cheese (Deluxe Edition) (2013) and Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble (2015), all three of which earned Grammy nominations. After the release of their record Antipop in 1999, the group disbanded but reformed as a touring entity in 2010 and began releasing music again soon after; Primus has released nine studio albums in total. The present lineup features Claypool on bass, Larry “Ler” LaLonde on guitar and Tim “Herb” Alexander on drums. Primus have delighted audiences all over the world with their oddball lyricism and out-of-the-box approach to music for over 40 years, and continue to be dedicated to bringing their innovative discography on the road.

Hot diggity dog! Played the album "Frizzle Fry" in it's entirety! EPIC!!
Primus had amazing opening acts, and than when they came on their set list was amazing, and Les Claypool you really know how to work a crowd! And also, this my first time to this venue, and believe me, I have been to many, and this was one of the best, great acoustics.
I have waited 20 years to see these guys, and it was an amazing show. Les never missed a beat, and what would you expect? Ler was in top form, and Jay did a great job with the drumming. I was expecting Herb, but I was not disappointed. The circus freaks from the oddity faire were awesome. I got to talk to them for a few minutes after the show, and they were really great people.
Awesome! Les is always amazing and has the best musicians touring with him. Will go to see him again and again...
Hands down. Technical perfection. Rythm-laden psychadelia at it's finest.
I give the show a 5-star rating... it's an overall 4-star rating because I didn't like venue much. The band was AwESoMe! Didn't know about the 400 first come first serve moshpit allowance, otherwise I would've gotten there earlier. Still got to see the band though!
Primus were simply amazing. I have never seen anyone play bass like Les Claypool. The whole band are just extremely talented musicians and their sound was fantastic. It was a total rock show and I felt like a teenager again listening to the songs I was rocking out to in the 90's. The opening band, Mariachi's el Bronx were really good too. I recognized them as the punk band I had seen open up for The Distillers and The Hives but have changed their sound. They really had their act together and played some amazing mariachi music. Like I said it was a great show and I woke up the next morning bummed that it was over. I can watch Les Claypool forever. That show made me addicted to Les Claypool's bass playing skills.
I have to say, this was my first time seeing Primus, and I pretty much stood there in shock almost the whole time, and I've seen A LOT of shows. Les Claypool is so fantastic, and they're all truly amazing musicians. The whole thing was just crazy, and I kept wondering how he learned to play bass that way. They really added something to this era of music that no other band or person could have added. A must see!!
First off, Les Claypool is an incredible entertainer! This show was like a Vaudeville act meets Alice in Wonderland, on acid, in space! Les is quite a showman and he took the audience on a grand adventure! Lots of tracks from Sailing the Seas of Cheese (my personal favorite Primus album) Larry is a master of his instrument (guitar) and sounded great all night! Jay did his thing on drums - also sounded great. I would see them again in an instant!!! Opening Acts: Mariachi El Bronx - Very entertaining (can't believe what comes out of this guy's mouth - hilarious!) Lil Big Ups - Interesting concept, but went on too long. Too repetitive and easy to lose interest - maybe not the right crowd. That said, having 3 extremely different and "odd" acts did contribute to "The Oddity Faire" concept and added to the overall experience.
Awesome show, Claypool and the boys were at it again! Clown guy was cool and creepy and openers Mariacho el Bronx were excellent. A definate must see for this year.
The show was awesome. Mariachi El Bronx was awesome as an openning act. When Primus hit the stage it was 2 hours of awesome music. They were tight, Jay lane was killing it on the drums.....a worthy replacement for Tim Alexander. Venue kind of sucked though, too many rules.....that whole "you have to have a seperate wristband to go in the Pit area" pissed me off......
Been a long time since I have had a chance to see primus again,I couldn't pass up the chance.. Les and his bass playing is an amazing sound experience and the nights music took me back to my early 20's. Primus might not be for everyone, but I am glad I went.
phenomenal. it was worth every single flippin penny i spent.
Primus was incredible. great job by the sound crew. El mariachi Bronx was terrible. Please don't play with them again Les!
Gogol Bordello's music is so dynamic and danceable that it is an absolute key to a big stage show! What an energy! I do not understand the combination of Gogol and Primus. Two different types of music and it seems like some audience was just the fan of Gogol, some fans of Primus, but hardly anyone was a fan of both. Gogol could be a main band with another band opening for them, along their rythms and beat. Pairing them with Primus - I do not get, as primus is from a different spectrum. I have not caught any commonalities in those two groups, unfortunately. I would love to be introduced to a band that could be an opening one for Gogol and bring some additional sounds, Gogol-like.
Best Primus show ever. Rush, pink floyd covers, classic.
Lets just say I went for Primus and had high expectation due to how many time I have seen Les. But Gogol Bordello was definitely the highlight of this show, not saying I was disappointed by Primus I mean they are Primus. I drove 9 hours to get there and it was well worth the drive.
i knew nothing about wolfmother other than that woman song and when they started playing man they were really good! i have a new respect for them plus they did riders on the storm! that bassist is better than the lead guy thats my opinion. Anywho then primus came on and blew me away les came out with this crazy instrument (which he probably built) and started rocking the pit was nuts and i love how everyone was singing along and they played my two favorite songs!! they also did a pink floyd song but i dont remember what it was =p the best concert this year!!!!
From the set-up to the encore, Claypool and Primus rocked. The perverted circus that surrounds Claypool is one of the most entertaining things I've seen. The group was tight after all these years and their covers and collaboration with Gogol Bordello was stellar.
PRIMUS put on one of the best shows I've ever seen, but when the people of Columbus started throwing things, thats when it totally went to hell. About 20 seconds into the 3rd song some Idiot threw a full beer bottle up on stage, wetting down Les and his equipment. While Les was scolding the Idiot, a crew member was wiping down the equipment and stage. Although PRIMUS put on a great show, after the thrown bottle, you could just tell that Les wanted out of Columbus. Ultimately, The LC (the venue) was to blame for all things being thrown because their security was letting it happen. Can't we just go to concerts and hold up bic/cricket lighters and stop throwing things? Columbus, OH fans, once again, disappoints.
