About

Talk about magic!

British comedy actors Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner have distilled all 4,200 pages of J. K. Rowling's seven Harry Potter novels into one brilliantly hilarious 70-minute show. Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry Experience is a lovably loopy two-person performance in which a Potter know-it-all teams up with a rebellious Harry newbie to create a show about -- you guessed it -- Harry Potter.

Clarkson and Turner conceived the show in 2005 as a five-minute sidewalk synopsis to amuse customers queued up for Rowling's sixth Harry novel. They expanded it to an hour the following year and opened at Edinburgh's Zoo Southside. European tours ensued, and in 2012 Potted Potter was nominated for two Olivier Awards, the highest honor in British theater. The show made its off-Broadway debut the same year and has since toured all over the United States and the world. After opening in 2018, the family-friendly Las Vegas production won Best of Last Vegas Awards for Best New Production and Best Value Show.

One actor channels a bookish Harry in Potted Potter while another plays every other character -- including Ron and Hermione, Draco Malfoy, Snape, the Weasleys, Sirius Black, Mad-Eye Moody, Dumbledore and, of course, He Who Must Not Be Named -- with wild abandon. Loads of wigs and other goofy props are employed in a nonstop laugh fest that also features a fire-breathing dragon, countless costume changes, brilliant songs, a plethora of props and even a Quidditch match encouraging audience participation (but no brooms, alas).

Accessible to Potter freaks and newbies alike, Potted Potter blends slapstick in the Laurel & Hardy vaudeville tradition with the wildly witty dialogue associated with Monty Python's Flying Circus. "Potting" is a British term for "the art of summarizing something into a digestible form," and, like all the best parodies, Clarkson and Turner's Harry experience is both splendid spoof and heartfelt homage.

  • Less than HoHum

I was really looking forward to the show. Years ago we saw the Reduced Shakespeare Company in London, and we hoped this would be up to that level. The show was extremely light on following ANYof the story lines, and even less on characters. I guess they left all their steam on Broadway. Really quite a letdown

Concept was great, execution was poor. We love Harry Potter, but just didn't enjoy this show at all.

Great event for the family. The boys on stage were hilarious and had us buckled over in laughter. Fun overview of the Harry Potter Series.

  • Very Disappointing!

by Kimosmom on 12/12/13Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 2 out of 5

For a venue such as the Balboa Theatre, one would expect entertainment of a much higher caliber than Potted Potter. With all due respect to the cast (all two of them), the play was seriously lacking substance. The play builds on the promise of a much-anticipated dragon prop that ridiculously fails to deliver. When the highlight of the show involves an inflatable beach ball, one almost expects clowns and show ponies to follow! Perhaps avid Harry Potter fans under the age of 10 may not mind the lack of sophistication, but for the rest of us I have to have to say, "Pass on this one."

  • A street show

by Melaura on 11/23/13Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 1 out of 5

The show was more suited to a street show, not enough of a quality show for an inside venue at high ticket prices. I'm surprised it has made it this far.

  • Hilarious!

by picklemooch on 11/17/13Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

What a fun and great idea! The humor was sometimes subtle and sometimes in your face, but the manner in which this play was written was amazing. My 10 year old was laughing just as hard as my teenager. These guys were great - love their use of "expensive" props. Would highly recommend.

  • Potted Potter out me to sleep

Two funny guys doing a knock off of the books and movies. Don't not go to this if you are a HP fan looking for something true to series or more involved than a play based on the summaries from the dust jacket of the books then don't bother. Kids will be sorely disappointed. Though, I found it amusing it's just not what I expected.

  • Mildly amusing.

by Anonymous on 11/13/13Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 2 out of 5

I love the Harry Potter books and thought I would thoroughly enjoy this show. Although I did enjoy it, I found it to be only mildly amusing. The two actors were really talented and it was a fun jaunt through all seven books, but many of the jokes didn't directly relate to the Potter series and the audience participation was fairly boring. By the end of the 70 minutes, I had been wishing it had ended sooner. I also wish I had purchased my tickets on a 2 for 1 deal. You do NOT want to pay full price for this show. I was disappointed and will not be recommending it to my fellow Potter fans.

Very funny and entertaining. Both actors were high energy and had the audience in the palm of their hands. Definitely a must see!!

  • I haven't laughed that hard in a long time

by Anonymous on 11/13/13Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

Kids are 10 and 12, we loved it. The guys were so funny, lots of spontaneous banter, very clever. Only complaint was copious use of fog machine, my lungs hurt by the end (we were in 4th row)

It's a fantastic show for anyone who has read the Harry Potter books. James and Del do a phenomenal job keeping the audience engaged throughout the show as well as taking any punches thrown at them-- or at least tiny girls who attack snitches.
