About

Portland Timbers History

The Portland Timbers joined MLS in 2009 and wasted little time in their mission to prove that The City of Roses was a proud soccer city. Under head coach Caleb Porter and Newcomer of the Year recipient Diego Valeri, the Timbers clinched the top spot in the Western Conference in 2013, earning their first-ever playoff berth. By 2015, the squad had notched their first MLS Cup victory over the Columbus Crew. Valeri would continue to play for the club until his retirement in 2022 after cementing himself as one of the biggest stars of MLS and earning the league's Most Valuable Player in 2017.

Led by head coach Giovanni Savarese, the Timbers topped the Western Conference for a second time in 2017 and followed the next year with a spot in the MLS Cup Final match against Atlanta United. The Timbers were ultimately defeated, but the match managed to set a then-record for league attendance with 73,019 fans checking in at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Portland won the 2020 MLS is Back Tournament and made another run to the MLS Cup Finals in 2021, but fell to New York FC on the Timbers’ home pitch at Providence Park.

The 25,218-seat facility has since undergone several renovations, in 2001 and 2019.

Providence Park currently hosts the Portland Timbers as well as the NWSL’s Portland Thorns. The pitch has also presided over matches for the MLS Cup, MLS All-Star Game, and two Women’s World Cups.

    The game was wild!

by korkor on 7/2/09PGE Park - Portland

I and my friends had a wonderful time at the game. Our group was a mix of Sounders and Timbers fans, so we had a friendly rivalry going on when we arrived at PGE park. My only qualm is that when we arrived at our seats, the Gorillas FC told us that the whole section was theirs. They said they had worked something out with PGE park. We went ahead and moved down to the beer garden, but it would have been nice to have been informed that we weren't actually going to get to sit in our seats.

    Go Timbers!

    by ace09 on 7/2/09PGE Park - Portland

We had great seats, the Timbers Army was entertaining as was the play on the field. PGE Park is an awesome venue and I can't wait to see the remodel and be a part of the Timbers action in 2011 when MLS comes to Portland.

This was a great matchup and I can see how these two teams are going to have a very intence and exciting rivalry in matches to come!

First game I've been to, more excitement, energy, and fun than imagined. Definitely worth going.

    great atmosphere

by cbee on 7/2/09PGE Park - Portland

Awesome crowd over 16,000. The game was fast paced, back n' forth, and seldom dull. The crowd support for the Timbers was loud and colorful. Prior to the kickoff a giant space needle was erected in front of section 107, a giant Timber Bob followed and cut the needle down in half (very funny). Great game, great atmosphere.

    Awesome energy!

by tthedecanter on 7/2/09PGE Park - Portland

This was one of the best sporting events I've been to in awhile. The energy of the crowd was amazing. We had a blast even though the Timbers lost.

    great soccer match

by rufus on 7/2/09PGE Park - Portland

Despite the Timbers losing, the match was exciting and fun to watch. There was a good-natured rivalry with the Seattle fans. PGE Park has that retro feel. Walking in reminded me of going to the Polo Grounds in New York as a kid. For some reason, fans were crowded into limited seating even though many open seats were covered with tarps. But overall, I had a great time. I would go to events at PGE Park again. I'd probably take MAX next time, since it takes you by the stadium.

    Great atmosphere

by CardsFan on 7/2/09PGE Park - Portland

So the Timbers didn't actually win, but they played well and the crowd was great. It was really the atmosphere that put it over the top for me as I am not a very big soccer fan to begin with, but I would definitely go again!

    Timbers vs. Sounders

by unhappymom on 7/2/09PGE Park - Portland

I'm glad I don't live in Portand. Why would anyone consider taking away a home team that is supported and has 80+ home games to bring in a soccer team that has so many fewer? The prices will go up. Why not keep PGE park for both teams and collect twice the rent? After our experience last night with all the drunks we will not be coming back for a family night out. I missed most of the game diverting my 9 year olds attention away from the inappropriate behavior and outragously poor sportsmanship. Sad, because I really think soccer is a fun game to watch. I guess our family will continue to support University of Portland for this event. GO PILOTS!

    Seattle fans everywhere

by nibb on 7/2/09PGE Park - Portland

Seattle fans were out in force, and the Portland fans were much more docile than advertised

    Sounders supporters rocked the house.

by papito on 7/2/09PGE Park - Portland

The game started with an astounding cross to a diving header in the second minute for a Sounders lead they never relinquished. This was followed by great song and revelry by the Sounder faithful that lasted the whole game. The Timber's fans were in full voice and their checkered flags and smoke bombs were a nice touch. Two more goals in the first half left it close and created a hotly contested second half. The final score of 2-1 for the visitors was a just result and besides a couple of upset timbers fans who came over to the Seattle supporters sections to try and start some trouble it was a great atmosphere.

Best atmosphere to date in PGE

    by kostuul31 on 7/2/09PGE Park - Portland

The Timbers army was the largest I've ever seen it, tons of Seattle fans came down and added to the faithful. Good soccer match (personally happy that the Sounders triumphed) and it was a good showing by the Timbers.

    Timbers kicked butt

by dwstrick on 7/2/09PGE Park - Portland

Great game between the Sounders and Timbers for US Open Cup. Sounders came out on top but the Timbers dominated the ball. We sat/stood in the middle of the Timbers Army cheering section. It was awesome, not to mention the eye candy was great!!!

    Let the rivalry begin!

by Yslandgyrl on 7/2/09PGE Park - Portland

Sold out crowd, LOTS of Sounders fans in the house, most of whom were either drunk or obnoxious. One of them started a fight down in the Widmere Beer Garden and was carried out handcuffed and hogtied (no kidding) by Portland's finest. Energy of the crowd was good, trying to find parking was not so great and $8.25 microbrews were especially not so great.

    Security flattens Sounders fan.

by TimberSteve on 7/2/09PGE Park - Portland

The best parts of the game where when the Timbers scored their goal and PGE security drove that Sounders fan's face into the patio, then halled him away. There should have been more of both.

    Timbers v Sounders Match

by Mychal on 7/2/09PGE Park - Portland

What an EPIC atmosphere.. As close to European Soccer atmosphere as you will get here in the states. Only thing is would not recommend taking your kids to any sections near 107 as there were some pretty vulgar chants going. didnt offend me persay, just not really a family atmosphere for the Kids.

    SoccerTown USA

by AnnieD on 7/2/09PGE Park - Portland

This was a rival match between the Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders. PGE stadium was filled to capacity with over 16,000 fans. It was a beautiful, warm summer's evening. The stadium took on the characteristics of what one would imagine an english premier soccer game to be like: The Timbers Army, the Sounders fans, confetti streamers, smoke bombs, fun signage and lots of team spirit. It truly was an event here in the City of Roses or in the City of Thorns, as one sign announced. The game itself was hard fought. The first minute included a goal by the Sounders which made me fear the worst for the evening. Having been a fan of the Sounders' keeper, Kasey Keller, when he was at University of Portland, it was hard not to cheer for him. It was a close, hard fought game. Both teams had plenty of scoring opportunities. Portland was down 2-nil at one point but managed to score before the end of the first half. The second half Seattle had what would have been a third goal but it was called back because of off sides. Portland Timbers fought hard; they missed a potential tying goal by inches. The game ended before Portland was able to tie the score. Well played, Timbers!
