  • Sloppy technique with bad sound

    by 6666 on 10/26/09Ahmanson Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

Had great expectations. Took the whole family. First piece (2009) was not impressive on any level. Seemed unpolished with sloppy execution (and lazy choreography). A few bright spots, but with Stomp, Cirque and others who have taken the genre so much farther, Philobolus has to excel in its niche: interpretative dance. The pieces needed intellect as well as artistry to distinguish themselves. With a lackluster performance like last Sunday's, it's back to smaller venues for the troupe. One of the most detracting elements was the poor quality of the sound. Audiences spending $100 for a ticket at a world class venue expect to hear excellent sound. The crummy-quality recordings (all treble, no bass or middle) sounded like a car radio. Yuck. I apologized to my kids all the way home, and tried to explain what Philoblus USED to be like....

Wonderful show. I'm usually not a big fan of modern dance but this one was amazing

  • Pilobolus was an entirely new experience

by JessicaM on 10/26/09Ahmanson Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

The venue was beautiful; the Ahmanson is beautifully appointed. The performance was one of the most unique I've ever seen. The vision was extraordinary and the emotion the dancers evoked through motion was palpable. Definitely a must see!

  • SO VERY INSPIRING!

by RheaDawn on 10/26/09Ahmanson Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

I've been told for months now to see them, as I move, dance and balance like them. Well last night blew my mind. It was as if watching what I do being performed and then some. It made me feel like I have a place I fit in and it's already out there. Breath taking, powerful, fun, brilliant and so very captivating. The 2 hours flew by as if it were 1 hour. I'll be coming back for more and more and more. Their strength and creativity and how they work in a group is just so ahhhh inspiring.

  • Pilobolus was amazing!

by alemor on 10/25/09Ahmanson Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

I am so glad that I purchased tickets for Pilobolus. They performed 4 pieces, and each was executed beautifully. The choreography involved elements of humor, whimsy, surprise, and poignancy. The dancers displayed incredible physical strength and prowess.

  • Pilobolus doesn't disapoint, again!

by recreate on 10/25/09Ahmanson Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen Pilobolus at least 10 times in my life and they continue to amaze and inspire me. They WOW you with movement that is beauitful and playful. I have to say of all the Pilobolus shows I've seen, this one had the best curtain call in the end. The people who got out early to try and beat the crowds missed a great ending!! It was FANTASTIC! I would like to point out that what I missed was each of the dancers pictures in the program to go along with their bios.

  • Definitely NOT the original Pilobolus.

by Phaelan on 10/25/09Ahmanson Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

I was actually very disappointed as the last time I saw the company, the work was very different. The dancers were technically lovely and there were some very nice moments, though I did not like any one piece as a whole. I felt that it has become more about the "tricks" which soon grew stale and predictable, and less about the content. I paid quite a bit for very disappointing orchestra seats, being unaware that we were way off to the side. I did not know that I would not be able to see anything happening stage right. I would rather have had cheaper seats elsewhere and be able to view the entire stage. The tickets were definitely not worth the price that we paid. I am sure that many people out there thoroughly enjoyed the performance depending on where they are coming from, so I would recommend that people see them.

  • Pilobolus Was Innovative, Energetic, Amazing

by Mleder on 10/25/09Ahmanson Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

This wonderful contemporary dance company uses parts of dance forms from all over the world including many various international music backgrounds to create a performance that is beyond amazing, captivating its audience throughout their performance. The dances were consistently creative, innovative and performed flawlessly. Every dance was another wonderful surprise. We could have stayed for another performance as they captivate you throughout the performance.

  • Too HomoErotic & Too Little Classcial Pilobolus

by CSDay on 10/25/09Ahmanson Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

The first two dances were interesting and relatively worthwhile new productions. The third dance consisted of men alone wearing only shorts. The third dance was uncomfortable for me as too HomoErotic. Possibly if the dancers' attire were different the eroticism would have been less pronounced. Finally, the last dance was more typical of classical Pilobolus though the exhilarating human structures so typical of the company just were not as numerous or interesting as in the past and missed. Finally the performance at times in the last three dances was very slow, another disappointment for a company built on motion. The dancers were good. The choreography poor. Company’s potential not realized. I look forward to better performances in the future.

Pilobolus dance is innovative and imaginative. They combine the individual body, group-body, objects, light, music into an experience filled with a range of emotions from humor to sadness with variety of energies and feelings.

  • They've only gotten better

    by malibu2009 on 10/25/09Ahmanson Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Opening act was so different from the more graceful work they're known for. Very upbeat. The creativity of their numbers is miles ahead of other dance groups. Those who've seen P before should return as it's all new stuff for several of the acts. They should take their show on the road in Europe, as there is material here that would play overseas very well.

  • what's new?

    by 2grace on 10/25/09Ahmanson Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

I had seen pilobolus perform several times in the 90's; loved them but felt that I get the idea and I've seen what they can do. I was satisfied wth that. I saw them again last night and regretted having waited so long. They are endlessly amazing and creative and magical. I am in love all over again. Thank you pilobolus - you are brilliant.

  • Terrific evening in the theater!

by jdavisstein on 10/25/09Ahmanson Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

The choreography is remarkably entertaining: funny , whimsical, and super creative. The dancers are brilliant. the joy is infectious. Just go!

  • Eyes happy

by Figaro on 10/25/09Ahmanson Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

The dancing was great! The sound not so great. The song selection could have been a lot better, and it could have been mixed better, but above all I think the sound guy was sleeping last night, because the high ends were blaring and I thought I was going to loose my hearing. Again though the dancers were nothing but perfect, and a marvelous blend of inspiring and absolutely entertaining. The strength they posses is astounding, and the movement they use is well trained and well executed. It's as if their bodies were one at one point, and Zeus cut them apart and now they are dancing to get back together. Brilliant. Hooray for the choreographers, and hooray for the dancers. One thing I could have seen move of was the naked scenes. I love flesh, and wanted to see more of it.

  • Pilobulus still innovative after all these years

by PLBGuy on 10/25/09Ahmanson Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Despite frequent and understandable comparisons to other performance groups, like Cirque du Soleil, Pilobulus is unique and a min-epanding venture into new and unchartered areas of modern dance. The company remains fresh and exciting with a blend of recent and earlier works. Initially one might have welcomed program notes indicating what the choreogrpahers had in mind about particular pieces. But in the end, it is all the more satisfying to have been left to form one's own conclusions as to what is expressed on the stage.

  • They still are creating unique pieces

    by qq7733 on 10/24/09Ahmanson Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

I Have been following the Pilobolus Dance Theater for more than 35 years and they still seem to have a great appeal to their old fans as well as new. They wowed the audience and at times I was amazed. However, several of the dancers did not have the preciseness that I have remembered in the past. Feet not together, pairs of dancers not evenly matched, timing off...subtle things that I notice mainly because I use to dance (not professionally), I follow dance religiously and I am am a highly visual person. All in all it was worth it and I would do it again, just as long as my eyes can adjust to their short comings.

  • Unique. Inspiring. Continually exciting!

by BCMB on 10/24/09Ahmanson Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

After following this company since its inception, there is no question in my mind that it is will continue to be a seminal influence on contemporary dance worldwide.

  • Not your typical dance company! A must see!

by LAShannon on 10/24/09Ahmenson Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

If you're looking for little girls in toto dresses dancing to your typical Classical music, then this is NOT for you (not that, that is not wonderful either) but if you appreciate any form of modern and contemporary art, then I recommend this for a weekend date night. No man would ever walk out of this show bored and for you ladies, it is two hours of ecstasy. It's a win win.
