About

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong in Concert

Funky jam group Pigeons Playing Ping Pong formed in 2009 in Baltimore, Maryland, when its original members met in a University of Maryland dorm. Releasing their first LP, ‘Funk E P,' the following year, the band would quickly find their sound in an explosive, energetic mix of funk, jazz, and electronic music reminiscent of Phish, Lettuce, and even the Grateful Dead. Their second album, ‘Psychology' (2014), upped their game and featured better production, tighter songwriting, and more focused singing from vocalists Greg Ormont, Jeremy Schon, and Ben Carrey. In 2016's ‘Pleasure,' the band delivered a cornucopia of wailing organs, sprawling melodies, shimmering backbeats, and groovy riffs. The group served up more lighthearted, sprawling psych-tinged funk with 2017's ‘Pizazz.' Their single "Doc" found them thriving with crisp horns and saxophones, while the seductive, groovy "Somethin' For Ya" shows how a little disco goes a long way when it comes to infusing their music with sexiness.

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong has taken on a pretty hearty touring schedule, sometimes playing up to 200 shows a year. In addition, they've hosted Domefest in Bedford, Pennsylvania, since 2009, attracting nearly 2,000 people every year. Their passionate fanbase, affectionately called "The Flock," turns out to see them whenever possible, including for their New Year's Eve headlining shows. This in addition to their numerous officially released live recordings, which give a window into the raucous parties that are Pigeons Playing Ping Pong shows. 2017's ‘The Great Outdoors Jam' captured the ethereal vibes, locked-in grooves, and wayward solos that can be found in their live shows. In 2018, they hit their first Bonnaroo, continuing their ascent. As guitarist and singer Jeremy Schon tells it, their live show "puts out as much energy as possible and promotes lightheartedness and positivity." Suffice it to say, these funk obsessives must be seen live to be truly experienced.

    Awesome!

So this was my first time seeing PPPP. It was a great show with mostly great people. The Vibe was good. As a frequent flyer in the Jam Band scene it is safe to say when PPPP is in town I hope to be there every time.

    The Opener was Better... Again...

by Pogo on 10/8/19The Fillmore Philadelphia presented by Cricket Wireless - Philadelphia

This is the second time I've seen PPPP. The first was not too long ago in Asbury Park, NJ. I remember having a blast both watching and listening to the opener Mungion (Mun-yun). Then Pigeons Playing Ping Pong came on and ruined the vibe. Their songs are so repetitive that I just tune out after a couple minutes whereas every band I've seen along with them has been able to jam while also keeping the sounds and riffs relatively new-sounding. In PPPP's case, the only thing that really differentiates their songs is the lyrics, and when there's 10 minutes of repetitive jamming between vocal sections, it's really easy to get bored with them. At this show, the opener was Aqueous, and if I'm giving PPPP a solid 5/10, they'd be about an 8/10. As for the venue itself, The Fillmore, I thought it was absolutely perfect! Amazing location in Philly (Fishtown), nice staff, large bars with decent selections of both food and drink, and despite my thoughts on the music, the venue was perfect for watching and listening to the bands. If I saw basically any other band headline, I'd have stayed for the whole show, but my friends and I all got bored around the same time and ducked out early because it didn't take long for us to get tired of hearing one drum beat for an entire band's set. Fillmore - 10/10 Aqueous - 8/10 PPPP - 5/10 Overall - 7/10, but easily an 8+ if you see a different band.

Great show all around. Music was intricate and well presented. Lights and effects were always spot on. The band was very entertaining and did an amazing job at including the audience in their show. Would reccomend this band to my friends that aren't already in love with them.

by Spicylegato on 10/8/19The Fillmore Philadelphia presented by Cricket Wireless - Philadelphia

This band was excellent! Love that they played a VIP show in a more intimate venue the first night and the second night played in a larger venue with a much bigger crowd! Seriously some of the best shows I’ve seen!

Concert was dope, venue needs some maintenance

by C. B. on 10/8/19The Fillmore Philadelphia presented by Cricket Wireless - Philadelphia

The show was amazing, 5 stars. Knocked a star for some weird venue issues. Mostly the bathroom situation was nasty. Upon arrival the ladies room was already littered with puddles and paper towels and according to my friend the men’s room was flooding. The other issue I had was the cups they used for beer were such s thick plastic that when they broke (all over the floor) the got really sharp whichever felt unsafe.

    relatively unremarkable

by J.D. on 2/13/19Culture Room - Ft Lauderdale

I like the venue, and I think the crowd had good energy, and the band did OK. But I just didn't hear anything that musically intriguing or engaging.
