Phoenix Mercury History

The Phoenix Mercury are a professional basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Founded in 1997, the Mercury are one of the league’s original eight franchises. The team reached their first Finals in 1998 and have made six total appearances, winning in 2007, 2009 and 2014. The Mercury’s legacy is marked by two major No. 1 picks: Diana Taurasi in 2004 and Brittney Griner in 2013. As members of the Mercury, Taurasi won the regular season MVP in 2009 and set multiple WNBA records, including most career points, most three-pointers and most field goals made, while Griner earned two Defensive Player of the Year Awards and broke several block records. Ahead of the 2025 season, Taurasi announced her retirement and the Mercury acquired five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas, who continues to hold the WNBA record for career triple-doubles.

It was electrifying to see the X Factors show up to support the Mercury ladies. Seeing how well Diana shot the ball with 31 points felt like old times! Let's win the Commissioner Cup, Mercury!!!

  • 1st WNBA Game!!!

    by Z. C. on 5/28/24Footprint Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Was my 1st ever professional basketball game and I loved it. I couldn’t believe how fast the stadium filled up for PHX vs DAL.

  • Missing The Mercury Train

by Toni on 5/28/24Footprint Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

The game was great and with lots of energy from the fans. I love the new rebel uniforms and alternate court, however, the fans were not given the opportunity to do the mercury train on the court. I'm assuming this is because of the new court. The Mercury Train is a staple and fans look forward to it in the 4th quarter to celebrate a lead or to get the energy back going if not winning. I hope it returns.

  • Great time

  • Amazing fun family experience

by Speedyecho on 5/26/24Footprint Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

The energy is electric from the second that you walk into the arena. The team plays a complete game on both ends of the floor. You are cheering the entire time. The off court entertainment is fun and energizing. The upgrades to the arena is amazing. A big difference from when I last attended a game 10 years ago.

  • Soooo much fun! Great date night out!

by ZaynsMom on 5/26/24Footprint Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

The husband and I had so much fun! The game was exciting and upbeat! We didn’t realized they had a court yard area for the kids and might bring them next time to experience that, but it was a great date night out with them :)

  • The Mercury Games are awesome!

    by Breezy B on 5/21/24Footprint Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

I always have an absolute blast at Mercury games. Too bad we must use Ticketmaster to purchase the tickets, they make the buying experience horrible. But I deal with it, just so I can see a great team play.

  • 5-star captivating!

    by Steve & Pamela B on 5/21/24Footprint Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

The Phoenix-Atlanta WNBA game was the most exciting & entertaining venue we have attended in our 6-year residency in the Valley!

  • I loved it!

I’m a huge fan of Phoenix Mercury, but their opening was amazing! The honoring of the Legends was amazing! This was an awesome experience and I’m so happy I was able to attend.

  • You’re service charges are ridiculous!!!

by Tellez on 5/14/24Footprint Center - PhoenixRating: 1 out of 5

I don’t know how a service charge can be 100% of the ticket price. Ridiculous.

  • Ok but needs improvement

by Millz on 9/11/23Footprint Center - PhoenixRating: 3 out of 5

The souvenir cups were Suns only. Hardly anything was Mercury, majority Suns advertising, items, ect.

  • Noisy

    by Mike B on 8/31/23Rating: 2 out of 5

Too much electronic noise. The drum beats and "Defense"were very annoying. Had to put stuff in my ears to reduce the decibels. Also, stopping the game with five minutes and two minutes to go to provide entertainment was unbelievable. I came to watch the basketball. A half time show is fine, but interrupting the game near the end was not appropriate. This was my first trip to see the Mercury, and not what I expected.

  • Playn 100%

    by KP@Reel on 8/30/23Rating: 4 out of 5

The AC was relieving, the Frys store was an experience. Purchased 2 sodas $15 + tax. Plus, we had to uncap/open drinks leave the cap in a basket at the register. People, have taken their actions out on players. This was a game changer for us. Next time I'll prepare myself some water. Our seats were at a nice angle, again the view was very good. The Mercury's played a great game but lost. Overall, many fans and love for Scorches bday!!
