Phoenix Mercury History

The Phoenix Mercury are a professional basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Founded in 1997, the Mercury are one of the league’s original eight franchises. The team reached their first Finals in 1998 and have made six total appearances, winning in 2007, 2009 and 2014. The Mercury’s legacy is marked by two major No. 1 picks: Diana Taurasi in 2004 and Brittney Griner in 2013. As members of the Mercury, Taurasi won the regular season MVP in 2009 and set multiple WNBA records, including most career points, most three-pointers and most field goals made, while Griner earned two Defensive Player of the Year Awards and broke several block records. Ahead of the 2025 season, Taurasi announced her retirement and the Mercury acquired five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas, who continues to hold the WNBA record for career triple-doubles.

  • Witnessed History Live Again!!!

As a Dallas Wings fan, it was incredible to witness them get their 19th win. The most wins in their teams' history. So proud of this team. Always super exicted to see everyone in person!! The game was amazing!!! The score was 71-72 with 19 seconds left, and then....the gorgeous, Arike "future G.O.A.T."Ogunbowale happened. Her perfect drive to the bucket for the glorious "And-1"put us up by 4. But wait, there's more. With 7.2 seconds left, the Phoenix Mercury weren't giving up, and out of nowhere almost tied this game up at the buzzer!! I love these teams, love the players, love this league. The fans were amazing, the energy and excitement filled that entire arena. Can't wait to go back again and again, and again!!

We had a great time! Seats are on the lower level so it makes it so much easier to see everything and really enjoy the game.

My first visit to a WNBA game. So much fun, helpful staff and such a clean arena. I went by myself and was able to meet so many fans. It was truly one family of Mercury fans.

  • It was electric like the Monsoon storm!

by SheShe on 8/11/23Rating: 5 out of 5

The crowd was loud and exciting! We were happy our Mercury added another win to their stats. The game was historical with the Mercury scoring the most in a quarter this season to the least they scored in a quarter, 7, and still winning the game!

To start things off I received my tickets through Fry's, that was pretty much the biggest pro to the whole night. I got my tickets in section 114 row 17. Seats had a good view, they were nice and padded. However they were barely big enough for me to sit in and I had to sit with my arms pretty much tucked in. Each seat shares both arm rests, so you essentially touch the people next to you. It seems like they want you to stand the whole time almost. The t-shirt giveaway they did was great except they either need a launcher or something else. No one could even make it to the road we were sitting in, and like I said we were 17 rows back from the courtside section. So I want to say maybe 100 feet away from the court. They need some more food vendors, most of the choices were the snack bar type locations. The bar choices didn't have a good variety of signature drinks. They were all "mule"type drinks. However, the thing that irritated me the most beyond compare was that there were spotlights up in the very top. They kept flashing super bright almost like a strobe every 30 seconds or so, so if you were looking up and they happened to go off you would get blinded. One of the good things however is that there is a family fun area behind one of the hoops. I forget which sections but it had cornhole, ping pong, picture taking area, and some other stuff which was pretty cool. They keep that up until the start of the 4th quarter. Also didn't have many vendors if any walking up and down the aisle.

  • Great game

  • Great game, great energy, horrible chairs

by Mizzle Kelley on 8/7/23Rating: 3 out of 5

I generally keep swapping seats each time I go to ta Merc game because some seats are better than others. I was sitting in section 117, seats 3/4 and they were horrible. Oh my goodness, many times I would have preferred to stand because of that! Geezus! They need to widen the seats for folks with big hips and a butt and also remove the cup holders from the middle between each seat, those should be more on the arm rest to allow more room for seating... despicable! I also usually purchase pineapple juice with a little sprite from the bar and this time they said I couldn't --- it sometimes seems like a lot of nonsense... if you carry the item, sell it to me. Period. Otherwise a great experience!

  • Witnessed History Made Live!!!

by Tracee on 8/6/23Rating: 5 out of 5

4 words to describe the Phoenix Mercury vs. Atlanta Dream game. Incredible. Historic. Exciting. Thrilling. I was able to witness Diana Taurasi make history and score her 10,000th point live!!! I really love Atlanta, I was so excited to see their team play in person. Diana put up 42 points, the Mercury won, history was made, what more could you ask for. I loved every moment of it, especially the post-10,000 point on-court celebrations, and after-game video tribute. I've since watched the replays on TV, but it doesn't do it justice. That's why it's nothing like experiencing WNBA games live in person. The crowd was electric and exciting., the lights, the sounds are so incredible. All the players are so amazing. Will definitely be back!!
