Phoenix Mercury History

The Phoenix Mercury are a professional basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Founded in 1997, the Mercury are one of the league’s original eight franchises. The team reached their first Finals in 1998 and have made six total appearances, winning in 2007, 2009 and 2014. The Mercury’s legacy is marked by two major No. 1 picks: Diana Taurasi in 2004 and Brittney Griner in 2013. As members of the Mercury, Taurasi won the regular season MVP in 2009 and set multiple WNBA records, including most career points, most three-pointers and most field goals made, while Griner earned two Defensive Player of the Year Awards and broke several block records. Ahead of the 2025 season, Taurasi announced her retirement and the Mercury acquired five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas, who continues to hold the WNBA record for career triple-doubles.

  • Absolutely amazing

by Troy on 7/1/24Footprint Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

We went to this game for free because we spent money at Fry’s. During this game my daughter became a diehard fan. She absolutely loved watching the game and she’s continuing to watch it even after. The seats were comfortable. The timeout shows/halftime shows were funny and well planned out. We really enjoyed it. It was cheap there too.

Game was great. Seats were a bit far but they were the only tickets I could afford. I wish they would replay more plays as they’re reviewing them. I love when you guys do the frys ticket deal, it’s a great way to help people get tickets in a different way.

  • Awesome

by Erin on 6/29/24Footprint Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

I’m from northeast OH and Cleveland doesn’t have a WNBA team anymore (or anywhere within a few driving hours for that matter) so I was thrilled while out in AZ for work to get to catch a Mercury/Aces game. Was a great venue with friendly staff, awesome crowd energy and team chants, and of course two awesome teams. Definitely felt the love in the stands!

  • Merc Ascending!!

    by Matty-o on 6/24/24Footprint Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

What a great experience for the fans, especially the kiddos! Adults can certainly get up for these games! The music, the vibe, and the level of play is awesome! Kids can hang down at the end of the court with their own 'zone' playing games, being near/next to the best dance crew in the WNBA, along with making signs for their favorite players! Yeah...we're going again, and again!!

  • Inspiring and Empowerment

by SheShe on 6/20/24Footprint Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

The energy in the arena was fantastic! Everyone was in great spirits, and the Mercury did their thing. I love seeing the Mercury win a big game and stop the Liberty's winning streak!

  • Mercury games are electric!

by Sarah on 6/19/24Footprint Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

I love coming to Mercury games with my family. The fans are so loyal and kind, it creates a fun and welcoming atmosphere at the games. The season ticket holders are called the X-factor, and the team credits the X-factor and other fans with some of the team’s wins because of the noise volume they generate. The Mercury team has such awesome chemistry this year, their games are so exciting to watch. I wish I could go to every Mercury game because supporting this team has becoming such a passion of mine. If you haven’t gone to a Mercury game yet, you are 100% missing out!

I bought Mercury tickets to the Friday game. They played against the Minnesota Lynx. The game was a great game to watch and me and my daughters enjoyed every minute of it. I recommend anyone to buy tickets to support the WNBA. Restrooms were clean and the food and drink service was fast.
