Phoenix Mercury History

The Phoenix Mercury are a professional basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Founded in 1997, the Mercury are one of the league’s original eight franchises. The team reached their first Finals in 1998 and have made six total appearances, winning in 2007, 2009 and 2014. The Mercury’s legacy is marked by two major No. 1 picks: Diana Taurasi in 2004 and Brittney Griner in 2013. As members of the Mercury, Taurasi won the regular season MVP in 2009 and set multiple WNBA records, including most career points, most three-pointers and most field goals made, while Griner earned two Defensive Player of the Year Awards and broke several block records. Ahead of the 2025 season, Taurasi announced her retirement and the Mercury acquired five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas, who continues to hold the WNBA record for career triple-doubles.

  • Phoenix Mercury vs San Antonio Stars....Fantastic!

by daloisel on 7/14/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

After moving to the Phoenix area the end of 2007 I finally got to go to my first Phoenix Mercury game. I was so excited because, you see, I am a huge Diana Terasi fan because I moved to AZ from CT and am still a fan of the UCONN Husky ladies team. Diana was a standout player and I became a fan then. Anyway, I had a fabulous time and the game was great against the San Antonio Stars. I had good seats and the energy around me was awesome. I leave AZ during the summer but if I can tickets for the Sept. games I will be there again.

  • Open Night WNBA Game - 2009

    by silky19 on 7/14/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

The opening night atmosphere was electrifying and party-like. The Mercury kept us wondering whether they would win their first game of the season. But the fourth quarter was classic "run and gun" Mercury basketball. I believe the "Mighty Mercury" are back. Thank goodness !!!

  • Amazing Mercury

    by Mercfan09 on 7/14/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

If your looking for something to do I would highly recommend going to see the Phoenix Mercury. They are so much fun to watch. The womens game is so much more exciting to watch than the mens game. The games are inexpensive and the Hip Hop squad makes the evening entertaining.

After LIsa left game with injury, it became a tug of war scoring. This was one of the best games to watch. Full of action. I am just glad Mercury came out on top.

by Baller on 7/9/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 3 out of 5

I LOVE WNBA!!!!! I was SO excited to travel to phoenix and watch one of my favorite players from UCONN!!! When I arrived, early and excited, I was rudely told to WAIT outside the venue....... guess I was too early! Maybe I'll travel east instead of west next time. Here I come San Antonio!!!

  • Mercury is number one for a good reason.

by BigGandfamily on 7/9/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

This was the first time we enjoyed a female basketball game, well at least at the professional level. We have gone to a Phoenix Prowlers' game, womens professional football. I would definitely recommend going to a Mercury game. It was exciting and had awesome music. I suggest parking closer to the arena.

  • Excellent Game

  • Mercury Rock

by pattilwzl on 7/2/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

I don't know why more basketball fans aren't showing up to support the Mercury. Girls basketball ain't what it used to be. Girls play hard, tough, aggressive ball just like the boys. If you haven't seen them yet, give em a try. You will become a loyal fan like the rest of us.

  • Mercury Vs Storm

by RizzoinPhx on 7/2/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Ok so i go to a lot of games- But i must say I did like the toughness and energy that The Girls came out with in the 2nd Half- You know Jackson is going to score them points but we did make it tough on her. Diana played Great D and was aggressive- lol get it D played D= anyways gvery good game and will see you next wed. Mighty Mercury!!!!

My husband, daughter, two grandchildren and I had a great time. This was our first Mercury game, but definitely not the last. It was fast paced and entertaining. We were impressed with the skill of the team.
