Phoenix Mercury History

The Phoenix Mercury are a professional basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Founded in 1997, the Mercury are one of the league’s original eight franchises. The team reached their first Finals in 1998 and have made six total appearances, winning in 2007, 2009 and 2014. The Mercury’s legacy is marked by two major No. 1 picks: Diana Taurasi in 2004 and Brittney Griner in 2013. As members of the Mercury, Taurasi won the regular season MVP in 2009 and set multiple WNBA records, including most career points, most three-pointers and most field goals made, while Griner earned two Defensive Player of the Year Awards and broke several block records. Ahead of the 2025 season, Taurasi announced her retirement and the Mercury acquired five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas, who continues to hold the WNBA record for career triple-doubles.

  • Those girls are sick!!!

by corkcity on 9/30/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

The Mercury are playing out of their minds right now, and especially in the 4th quarter. They can turn it on and fly down the court leaving a dejected opponent in the back court, unable to celebrate their previous field goal they felt so good about. And did you see when they won the Western Conference? They were like, "whatever, when's the real party start?" Poor Indianna acted predictable. You could tell they've never had anything before. So.... GO MERC!!!

Great seats, action of the game was very fast pace, saw lots of great passing and shooting. Final score of 120 to 116 with an overtime win for hometown Phoenix Mercury couldn't have been a better game for the home town fans. Great Action. Go Mighty Mercury!

I have been a Mercury fan for many years and yesterday I pulled the trigger and finally bought a ticket to the game. Since it was the championship and my first game I bought a front row seat. All I can say is that these girls have game and they left it all on the floor last night. I will most definitly be attending games in the future.

  • What a Game!

by Stodd on 9/26/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

I was in Phoenix for other reasons and discovered that the WNBA playoffs were in Phoenix that weekend so we thought what the heck. The tickets were great and the game was amazing. There was so much energy in the arena. It was truly a party. If I am ever in Phoenix during the WNBA season again, I won't miss the chance to see a game.

  • MERCURY SLACKING!!!!

    by Speedy4u2 on 9/26/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

Enjoyed the game... My team won. Mercury didn't come to play at all. Taylor should have ridden the bench the whole time. She was horribe.

by funvince on 9/26/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

It was a great event to watch even through our Mercury team felt short last night. The seats were mid court and the crowd generating thundering shouts urging encouragement for our down team. I would definitely go to another Mercury game. We enjoyed and stayed until it was completely over.

  • WNBA is thrilling despite loss!

by jmebg on 9/26/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

I am completely blown away every time I see a WNBA game. As a woman, I can not imagine what it would have been like to grow up as an athlete with SOMEWHERE TO PLAY even after college. I played basketball in highschool and had that been the case my life would have been very different. Here is the SOMEWHERE I dreamed of growing up! With five of the 2007 WNBA Champion Mercury still on the team the Mercury are the best there is! The highest scorer and best assist in the league and the best Rookie all add to the excitement. The only downer tonight was the 1/2-1/3 empty seats EVEN with $2 tickets! Come on Phoenix bring your daughters and sons alike to see great Women's basketball! The Mercury need their fans there! We owe it to them to support them. Please come see 4/26/09 the last game of the Playoff for a berth to this high stakes game. Then come back to the Championship game next week!

  • Mercury are Number 1!!!

    by Scottrh20 on 9/22/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first WNBA game and it was awesome! I don't know if it has to with not much advertising or the competition from the D-Backs game and Monday Night Football, but the place was only about a third full if that. The atmosphere was awesome, the fans were loud. I took my girlfriend and her son, they loved it. For the small price we paid we got amazing seats, literally less than $15 for all three of us and they ended up moving us even closer to the floor! I plan to get tickets when they take on the Sparks. BEAT LA!!!

  • WNBA is way under-rated!

by IzzySnipes on 9/22/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Freaking amazing! Awesome crowd, amazing players. You gotta love it.

  • Mercury take em down!

by Talizona on 9/22/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

The game was great! Lively crowd, and the arena does do a lot to get people pumped. I was down on the floor for one of the quarters and everyone was so busy behind the scenes. I really respect all the hard work and effort! Doesn't hurt to top it all off with the win!!

  • I was surprised

by JotaVoss on 9/22/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

This was my first Mercury game and I was surprised as to how much fun I had. The Mercury Fans are very enthusiastic about their team and the Phoenix Mercury themselves are a blast to watch. I had lots of fun and I am even considering season tickets. =)
