Phoenix Mercury History

The Phoenix Mercury are a professional basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Founded in 1997, the Mercury are one of the league’s original eight franchises. The team reached their first Finals in 1998 and have made six total appearances, winning in 2007, 2009 and 2014. The Mercury’s legacy is marked by two major No. 1 picks: Diana Taurasi in 2004 and Brittney Griner in 2013. As members of the Mercury, Taurasi won the regular season MVP in 2009 and set multiple WNBA records, including most career points, most three-pointers and most field goals made, while Griner earned two Defensive Player of the Year Awards and broke several block records. Ahead of the 2025 season, Taurasi announced her retirement and the Mercury acquired five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas, who continues to hold the WNBA record for career triple-doubles.

  • Most Memorable Mighty Mercury

by themaskman on 10/10/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Could it get any better than: a home court win in a championship game in a courtside seat in a bargain price seat? The atmosphere was electric and the Mercury did what a championship team has to do- OVERCOME!

What an incredible and unforgettable experience to witness the Mercury take their second WNBA Title. It is a chance of a lifetime and I am glad I was there to witness it all! My seat location made it all the more exciting as I sat in the second row!

  • WNBA games ARE good!

by MissDani on 10/3/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Incredible high energy game that kept you on your feet for 40+mins! I was exhausted afterward from all the excitement. The energy at the US Airways center was great, definitely felt like the Playoffs. I came from CA to PHX, and it was worth the trip. Will go again, and again, and again. The caliber of the WNBA is steadily improving, and watching these women play professional basketball is truly an honor. Leave your inhibitions at the door and give it a shot. If you truly love the game of basketball, you will enjoy yourself.

  • Come to play ladies

by Nightstar on 10/3/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

I love the Mercury! But in the second game of the play offs I felt they did not "come to play". They were sloppy, couldnt buy a basket for the most part. Rebound????

  • Disappointed with game but loved experience

by Battmother on 10/2/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

I have not been to a WNBA game since I was a season ticketholder for the 1st 7 years. It was great being back and at a Championship game. I would rate the experience as great even though the Mercury lost. I was however very disappointed in US Airways arena. It was very evident they are cutting corners. There were so few concessions open that the lines literally clogged the corridor. There were no Subways open so no healthy food alternatives available.

  • Tad Sad

by ichirp on 10/2/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

Seemed our ladies were a tad tired Thursday night. Tuesday's game was just totally awesome. Here's to keeping the fingers crossed, I know that our Phx Mercury will bring bring it home. Win or lose (but we won't lose!) we have a great team and they have a lifelong fan.

  • WNBA Finals-Mercury vs. Fever

by Duncle on 10/2/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

Intensity, action and passion. Crowd interaction, great family event!

  • energy

by coachern on 10/2/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

simply put - if you're a basketball fan...then you owe it to yourself to attend a Mercury game...the energy is through the roof and makes it an enjoyable game regardless of where your seats are...however, I do reccommed sitting as close to the floor/court as possible so that you can also get the insight from overhearing the players/coaches/refs chat amongst themselves...you learn & laugh quiet a bit...overall great experience!...plus it's way more affordable than floor seats for the Suns!

  • Great Game!

by Ronsauto on 10/2/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

High energy basketball game! Never ending activity for the spectators. Allot of T-shirt throws and activities. Our Team did not win the game but I would recommend going to all fans!

  • Bringing it down

by DownSouth on 10/1/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

This game against the fever was tight, no matter where you sit you always get a feel of the game. It is very exciting, only been to a couple of games and fell in love with it. I will now have great memories of the 2009 season playoffs, with my daughter. Looking forward into buying season tickets. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK GIRLS!

  • WNBA Finals

by DXLakers on 9/30/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

I've been to a Saturday LA Sparks game and the Father's Day/Daughter-Daddy game and both had higher attendance than Game 1 of the Finals! Other than that, it was great! It was my first time at any type of sporting Championship series. Since the Suns cant make it to the Finals, there should be far more fans in attendance!!! Go Lakers!!!
