Phoenix Mercury History

The Phoenix Mercury are a professional basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Founded in 1997, the Mercury are one of the league’s original eight franchises. The team reached their first Finals in 1998 and have made six total appearances, winning in 2007, 2009 and 2014. The Mercury’s legacy is marked by two major No. 1 picks: Diana Taurasi in 2004 and Brittney Griner in 2013. As members of the Mercury, Taurasi won the regular season MVP in 2009 and set multiple WNBA records, including most career points, most three-pointers and most field goals made, while Griner earned two Defensive Player of the Year Awards and broke several block records. Ahead of the 2025 season, Taurasi announced her retirement and the Mercury acquired five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas, who continues to hold the WNBA record for career triple-doubles.

  • A team for the ages!!!!!

by AFAE on 10/11/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

It was a great finals series, and obviously a great ending. Clutch game 5, everyone came to play & so did Diana Taurasi who brought her A game to play. She’s one of the best, sharp shooter, more mature, she understands the game, and more importantly she understands team work, and that is what it’s all about, teamwork. Other point is defense; defense wins championships, wants you get in the same page, the offense flows. If they stay consistent as a team, they can repeat as champions and probably be one of the dynasty’s and stand up as one of the best teams in the history of the WNBA.

  • WNBA Finals: game 5

by Anonymous on 10/11/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

This was an amazing event. Game 5, the final, decisive game for the WNBA Championship Title. The energy of the crowd was up and the Mercury got off to a slow start, but the crowd wasn't going to let that happen for long. As the energy (excitement) level continued to increase the Mercury fell into a rythym. I was impressed by the quality of the game, the fans and the players. A wonderful evening! First time I had been to a deciding game in any sport -- this was FANtastic!

  • WNBA Championship - Incredible!!!!!!!

by IamCruiser on 10/11/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

As a first time attender of a WNBA Game and any type of championship, the Phoenix Mercury and WNBA produced an incredible game experience for me and my children. I have never thought someone on the production side of a pro team could keep a fan as engaged as the production/marketing directors were for this game. There was never a chance to veg-out, disengage or desire to take a break from the game. Kudos to the marketing/production manager/team for keeping me intently engaged in the entire game experience. The Phoenix Mercury and Indiana Fever did a great job of doing that too. The confetti, music and winning of the WNBA Championship was a real hit with my kids and a fun thing to experience. It's a rare thing to ever be present for any league's championship, but this was truly special. Administrative note to US Airways/Phoenix Mercury: US Airways management/staff need to fix the gate opening problem. Season ticket holders are entered into the stadium 15 minutes before any other ticket purchaser. If the Mercury think this is a good thing, think about the message it sends to potential season ticket holders who stood in line pissed off prior to each game. I was miffed by it but most were angry. It has a way of hurting the majority when something exclusive is done for a few. Also, it was communicated to the Arizona Republic and news agencies that doors would open at 4pm. That was an error, in that, the doors opened up 75 minutes ahead for season ticket holders and 60 minutes before for everyone else.

by Sandmanfamily on 10/11/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Being at the Mercury Championship game was awesome. We took our 16 month old daughter and our 2 month old son along with my mom and dad and it was my dad's 39th birthday present to watch the Mercury take home the championship on home court. It was an amazing experience and we cant wait to do it again.

  • Mercury were off the chart entertainment

by Mcdevil on 10/11/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

I was excited to see all the people finally supporting the Mercury women. They play so hard and DT is awesome. I think the X-factor made a difference in them pulling out game 5 to win the championship.

  • The Mercury are Marvelous!

by Lorland on 10/10/09US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

What a game! The close scores throughout made it exciting. I had to turn my hearing aids off--it was too loud! It was the happiest, well-behaved crowd I have seen in a long ime - in my 84 years in Chicago, New York and here -- with the Mercury and the Suns. May they continue to be the champions they really are! Viva Mercury!

  • Phoenix Mercury are victorious again!!
