Phoenix Mercury History

The Phoenix Mercury are a professional basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Founded in 1997, the Mercury are one of the league’s original eight franchises. The team reached their first Finals in 1998 and have made six total appearances, winning in 2007, 2009 and 2014. The Mercury’s legacy is marked by two major No. 1 picks: Diana Taurasi in 2004 and Brittney Griner in 2013. As members of the Mercury, Taurasi won the regular season MVP in 2009 and set multiple WNBA records, including most career points, most three-pointers and most field goals made, while Griner earned two Defensive Player of the Year Awards and broke several block records. Ahead of the 2025 season, Taurasi announced her retirement and the Mercury acquired five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas, who continues to hold the WNBA record for career triple-doubles.

Had a great time at the Mercury Game, they played hard although we didn't win. Only thing I would ask that be changed, is to have more than 2 bartenders at the location where you can redeem your drink coupon, as it took a long time to get the drink.

The noise that the Phoenix Mercury Fans make is awesome. The hip hop dancers and Scortch the mascot are good entertainers. Real good game!!

  • Game was amazing but...

    by snoop9988 on 5/17/10US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 3 out of 5

I will most definately recommend anyone to go to a Phoenix Mercury game..BUT I WILL NOT recommend that anyone try to attend the first game...the security was extremely disorganized. We were told that if you got there 2 hours early you would get a replica of the championship ring, but after standing in line of over two hours and only minutes before the championship ceremony... they opened the doors and as you entered you were instructed to turn over you ticket so they could mark it to get a ring and some poor Mercury rep had a box of rings and was literally being mobbed from all directions and After about 5 minutes the rings were all gone and now there was mad a dash to your seats to catch the championship ceremony... We were here for the 2008 opening day and it was much more organized and we got our rings without all the hassel.

  • The Mercury Rallied like the Champions They Are!

by alraschieb on 5/17/10US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Whenever possible, I take my 3 year old daughter to the Phoenix Mercury games. I think children can learn a great deal form watching organized sports and I find the WNBA to be a bit more sanitized than the NBA game...crowd and players alike. The Mercury never give up...and it took them coming from behind early in the game and again later to seal the victory. MIGHTY MERCURY!

  • Phx Mercury awesome!!!!

This was my first Phx Mercury game. What a game to attend. My daughter and I had an amazing time, and will definately be back soon!!!!

  • Poor time

by patchesthedog on 5/17/10US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 2 out of 5

It was a game was great:) You have the worst seats, you must be small to fit into the seats and there is no space between the seats to walk though without having everyone stand up for anyone to get out too. I sadly will not becoming back to any more games:(

  • A Hollywood Script

by whathadhappened on 5/17/10US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

This was my 4 year old Daughter and Wifes first WNBA game. It was the Mercury's championship ring presenation, season opener, Forward Dupree's first game, and a game which was decided in the last seconds of the game; what more can you ask for.

  • Great game

    by Vicki95 on 5/16/10US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

The Game was wonderful, lived up to the hype. Mecury won by 1. The X factor is the loudest crowd for the WNBA I've ever seen. They were into the game and had great cheers for their team. I would love to come out here again for a game. Go Mercury!!

  • Mercury game was awesome

  • Phoenix Beats LA

by JenWu on 5/16/10US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Lots of fun as usual and the Mercury does have a terrific fan base. Game was fast paced and close most of the time. The girls did pretty good considering they really didn't get a chance to practice together because of travel schedules. Here's to a great season!!

  • That's why there the CHAMPS!!!!

    by cutckleme2 on 5/16/10US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

I was a little disappointed to see the disorganization at the side door. We were then ask to leave (after standing there for an hour and a half) because we were not in a group and then cominced to stand in another line. Fortunately there were rings still availible. However the game made up for all of that chaos. YOU GO GIRLS. After chantting BEAT LA. Those last seconds were intense and the CHAMPS pulled it off in the end Bring on the next competitiors

  • Great game- but a sorry, disorganized venue

by Anonymous on 5/16/10US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

This game was a nail-biter with the Mercury gaining a one-point lead with just 1.5 seconds left in the game. The team clearly needs to tighten up a bit and will as they play together more; many starters have only been in town less than a week. However, once again, Mercury management and US Airways Center staff botched what should have been the simple matter of getting people into the arena. Security and team customer service staff may have been told Season Ticket holders were supposed to enter via certain doors, but nobody bothered to tell the season ticket holders. Has anyone ever thought of making and posting signs directing people to certain doors to ensure the fans don't get verbally abused by security people? Whose bright idea was it to first fill up the lobby to capacity by letting in anybody who showed up, then forcing season ticket holders to wait with everyone else? Who thought up the bright idea to give some people "prizes," that turned out to be the opportunity to hear a sales pitch for season tickets? This is perhaps the sleaziest thing I've encountered. Ever. I am a former season ticket holder. My spouse and I quit buying season tickets because there's no benefit to it. None. Season tickets holders were told two years ago to show up early to be the very first to receive championship rings. Then, a couple dozen busloads of kids were marched in before the season ticket holders and received championship rings. This year's entrance debacle was just more proof that the Mercury are hiring customer service people who look pretty, but don't possess the brains god gave a turnip. Anyone could figure out that making a sign telling season ticket holders to enter via a specific door would accomplish the goal of giving season ticket holders both this year's rings and the ability to enter the arena a little early; small benefits, but benefits nonetheless. We supported the Mercury in losing seasons. We supported them in winning seasons. We will not support the sleazy sales tactics of their marketing staff. We will not support purchasing season tickets because there is absolutely no benefit whatsoever to being a season ticket holder.

This was my first WNBA game and it was very exciting start to finish.

  • The best pro basketball experience!

    by PAkid103 on 5/16/10US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

I have been coming to Phoenix 2 times a year for the last 4 years. I love coming to the games here. This is a great organization with a great staff and the League's best fans! I never have anything bad to say about the experience. However, I dId have one complaint this time. It was the championship celebration for their title last year. We had been waiting in line since 7 A.M. The doors were supposed to open at 9:30 A.M. for an 11 A.M. game. They were only letting the STHs in first, and they were late opening up the door. They didn't open up our doors until 9:55. I thought it was extremely rude that we had to wait. They were handing out replica rings. Were the rest of us not going to get them when only the STHs were all getting theirs?!! It was ridiculous. We are all here for the same thing; to get into the arena for the ring ceremony. I thought we were going to miss it. Fortunately, we made it. And the game was the best one that I have seen in person! A one point win by the Mercury in the last 1.5 seconds!! It was a great game. I will still make my anual trips here because the Mercury organization makes the whole game experience unforgettable. The players are top-notch, classy, passionate players who love and adore the fans. Simply a great atmosphere!! Definitely worth watching!!

  • Mercury!!! The best Team Arizona Has!

    by Kissie48 on 5/16/10US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Couldn't have more fun watching a game if I tried. My husband couldn't take his eyes away from the game because the excitement was enthralling-they are the best team in Arizona to watch! Can't wait till the next game and Penny Taylor has proven herself strong once again!

  • Mercury vs China

The tickets were way too expensive for an exhibition game with few attendees and diane taurasi doesn' t even show up. The game sucked.
