Phoenix Mercury History

The Phoenix Mercury are a professional basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Founded in 1997, the Mercury are one of the league’s original eight franchises. The team reached their first Finals in 1998 and have made six total appearances, winning in 2007, 2009 and 2014. The Mercury’s legacy is marked by two major No. 1 picks: Diana Taurasi in 2004 and Brittney Griner in 2013. As members of the Mercury, Taurasi won the regular season MVP in 2009 and set multiple WNBA records, including most career points, most three-pointers and most field goals made, while Griner earned two Defensive Player of the Year Awards and broke several block records. Ahead of the 2025 season, Taurasi announced her retirement and the Mercury acquired five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas, who continues to hold the WNBA record for career triple-doubles.

  • Flashing lights and noise.

by JoeyD on 9/22/24Footprint Center - PhoenixRating: 1 out of 5

The noise in the arena is sometimes unbearable, and I'm not talking about the crowd. Add to that, the flashing lights, DJ (totally unnecessary) and the hip hop dancers, it seems like "what are we watching here? A game or a concert? When I see and you see, parents putting hearing protection on their children there is obviously a problem. Yes, I'm old school, been watching games since the 70's in NYC. I would like to go to more games but not at the cost of my vision and hearing. If the people need stimulation they can smoke pot and watch the game at home on TV.

  • PHX Mercury - Sept 2024

by ArubaJim on 9/10/24Footprint Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Was in Phoenix to attend a concert and see some friends. Decided to take in a WNBA game - nice venue (Footprint Center), as it wasn't jam packed there was plenty of room, entrance was easy and few lines for anything. WNBA players have skills and was worth the trip.

  • Disgusted

    by 22 on 9/8/24Footprint Center - PhoenixRating: 1 out of 5

PM played like they were in practice. Telegraphing plays and moving slow. I can see the disconnect w the new coaches. Give me my #22 jersey because I can bring the energy to compete w CC22 fever.

Treated myself and my two nieces to our first WNBA game with my favorite Mercury. It was an incredible experience all around. Footprint Center is a fantastic venue and the Mercury put on an AMAZING show (thanks DT, Tash, BG, Sophie, Kah). Worth every penny and then some.

by Grateful Fan on 9/4/24Footprint Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Getting to watch Olympians and all of the other talent is such a treat! So much more to the W than 1 or 2 big name players, including A’ja Wilson - the arguably best player in the world. I’ve enjoyed every minute of this season!

  • We had a great time!!!

by Nat on 9/4/24Footprint Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

My husband and I had a great time at Sunday's game. Instead of watching the game on TV, we opted to get a pair of cheap GA seats and the experience was way better than I anticipated. The staff was extremely helpful and helped us find 2 of the best seats in the designated general admission section (GA is all open seating on the 200 level). I'd definitely do this experience again.
