Phoenix Mercury History

The Phoenix Mercury are a professional basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Founded in 1997, the Mercury are one of the league’s original eight franchises. The team reached their first Finals in 1998 and have made six total appearances, winning in 2007, 2009 and 2014. The Mercury’s legacy is marked by two major No. 1 picks: Diana Taurasi in 2004 and Brittney Griner in 2013. As members of the Mercury, Taurasi won the regular season MVP in 2009 and set multiple WNBA records, including most career points, most three-pointers and most field goals made, while Griner earned two Defensive Player of the Year Awards and broke several block records. Ahead of the 2025 season, Taurasi announced her retirement and the Mercury acquired five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas, who continues to hold the WNBA record for career triple-doubles.

  • Mercury Event

by pfizzle on 7/19/11US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 3 out of 5

The Mercury never trailed against Mystics who are a hard team to play against as they make you walk the ball up the court. I never thought that Diana and rest of the team felt threatened by the Mystics inconsistent surge. The Mercury played to the level of their competition is this game . Sloppy played game but another win for the Mercury is what counts .

  • Phoenix Mercury - They are Awesome

by SunnyNair on 7/19/11US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

The basketball IQ in this team is simply awesome. No big plays but smart plays. The team is just so good - the crowd at the US Airways center was good too. Me and my family had a good Friday evening. It was like sitting in front of a very large TV. Excellent view of the entire court from the center - we got some good seats.

  • Love the Mercury -- Miss all the Fun and Games

    by Kellynn59 on 7/18/11US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 3 out of 5

I love watching the Mercury play, but something I missed seeing at the game on 7/15/11 is more of the fun stuff that used to go on between the plays. The fun stuff really made the Mercury games a family fun event. I remember one game there were so many fun things going on and we had such a fun time. Kid contests, the Dancing Dads, Scorch antics, funny goofy stuff that really makes the Mercury games better than any of the guys' sports games. Bring back some more of that fun stuff. Thanks for listening.

we had a great time, loved the seats and the price we got for them. I hope to be fortunate enough to go to another event like this.

  • High tempo

by Nativebeauty on 7/18/11US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 3 out of 5

Sure we wanted to see CP3-Candice Parker play but she was not there to show her wonderful moves. It was a bummer to find that out as we made our way into United Airways. Then again watching Diana Turasi play was awesome, She's the bomb on WNBA as well as Candice Parker despite the injury...

  • Great Game - Bad Seats

by Tarheeljp on 7/17/11US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

I think the players should have some kind of interaction with the fans. I was a season ticket holder of another WNBA team and they would have pass out info on the players as you came in and if your flyer had a certain sticker on it (which was announced during the game) you could meet and get an autograph from two players after the game. We didn't know who the players were until we got in the line for autographs. It was a nice surprise to meet some of the players. Seat 111, Row AA not good.

  • Lots of Mercury energy

by DonnaDon on 7/17/11US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

IT was great to see Cheryl Miller and it was fun to be in the stands with all the energetic fans and activity. The Mercury looked great. WE had a good time and will go again.

  • Girls got game

    by rexy11 on 7/17/11US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

As always the women's basketball game was not only exciting, but well played. To see just how good their game is it must be seen in person. A friend was in from L.A. for the weekend and when I suggested we go to the Mercury game, lets just say she was less than enthusiastic. By the end of the 1st quarter she was jumping out of her seat and returning high fives to the people seated around us. The halftime show included a stroll down memory lane by one of the most charismatic people to ever have played the game. Cheryl Miller is still a very gifted speaker. As the final seconds expired I looked at my friend the "not a sports fan" and the smile from ear to ear said it all. If you have yet to go to a game you really have no idea what you are missing.

The game was great, it was a fun, party atmosphere. And a WIN was really fun! We buy individual tickets when we can go to a game. Give us a chance to "try out" different seats. I would NOT recommend section 123 as it was VERY ANNOYING to have a constant flow of people going up and down the steps with refreshments, (or for other reasons) blocking our view. (Section 123, Row 10, seats 20, 21, 22) Other than that it was a great time. We also rode the "light rail" to the downtown area for the first time. Great to get a FREE RIDE with our game tickets!

  • The Mercury are awesome!

by Lindahaz on 7/17/11US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Although they weren't on fire offensively, they still manage to entertain and win. Diana Taurasi is amazing and there passing game was very effective.

  • First Mercury Game

by SBooze on 7/8/11US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

This was the first WNBA I ever attended. I brought my family and niece and nephew and honestly, for the price and the level of play, I had a much better time than any of the NBA games I have attended.

  • Very intense

    by Nia1 on 7/7/11US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

It was a very heated game. The teams were definitely at each others throats and made watching the game much more exciting. In the end, we won the game and we definitely earned it.

  • Not woman's basketball, just great basketball
