Phoenix Mercury History

The Phoenix Mercury are a professional basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Founded in 1997, the Mercury are one of the league’s original eight franchises. The team reached their first Finals in 1998 and have made six total appearances, winning in 2007, 2009 and 2014. The Mercury’s legacy is marked by two major No. 1 picks: Diana Taurasi in 2004 and Brittney Griner in 2013. As members of the Mercury, Taurasi won the regular season MVP in 2009 and set multiple WNBA records, including most career points, most three-pointers and most field goals made, while Griner earned two Defensive Player of the Year Awards and broke several block records. Ahead of the 2025 season, Taurasi announced her retirement and the Mercury acquired five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas, who continues to hold the WNBA record for career triple-doubles.

  • Game was full of positive energy!

    by ProudFan2011 on 9/19/11US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

I enjoyed the game very much, was a fun night out and a great experience. I felt so proud of the Mercury players, they really played hard. Their defense was worlds away from last Thurs (9/15) game. I wish I could fly out to Seattle tonight to show my support but I am employed :). However, they will get my FULL attention tonight in front of my TV as I will be glued to the tube!!!

  • Best Sporting Family Entertainment in Valley

My Granddaughter (12) and I have been attending games for over 5 years now. The Mercury organization puts on a great family show with serious hard playing basketball at the forefront. Everyone in the arena is very involved in the game because of the dancers motivating the crowd. Bring the entire family, including the grandparents; they will love seeing their grand kids having so much fun and not having to worry about the language or actions (fighting) of other fans.

The seats were great, the game exciting, the fans crazy and the Mercury won to stay alive. A wonderful memory.

My friend and I totally enjoyed the experience. It was her first women's basketball game, she liked it better than the men's games. The game and everything besides the game were fast-paced and very much fun.

  • Team

by GeminiRules on 9/6/11US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Wow, what a game 93-77 Phoenix! I came all the way from the Bay Area to witness this clash of the Titans and it was well worth every dollar spent. The Mercury played outstanding "D" and "D" Diana was outstanding to boot, along with Candace Dupree who set a franchise record w/19 rebounds & Dewanna Bonner who did it on both ends of the court, but as we know it takes a team to win games and the TEAM rose to the occasion as usual. My only regret is that I don't live in Phoenix so that I can become a season ticket holder. Good luck in the play-offs ladies.

  • Officials/Seating

by GaAh on 9/6/11US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

I was dissappointed in the officiating of the event. Now i can see why in some cases athletes get hurt. Some may call it tight and others will let it go, not right. Should be consistent. Granted I'm glad the Mercury won but officials need to take pride in what they do and officiate better. I was surprise when i was purchasing tickets how the seating wasn't all taken. my seats were fine but where were the people.

The game was amazing. If you have never been to a WNBA game please attend one. I'm a fan of the game so it was great seeing two great teams battle it out. Also the PHX fans were great for the home team.

  • Great night with the WNBA

by CanDuFan on 9/5/11US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

We had so much fun at this game. It was like a playoff battle. Seeing Candace Parker score into the 30s while Candice Dupree had 22 points and 19 rebounds. AMAZING !! As always with the Mercury DT, Penny , Timeka, DeWanna and Ketia never disappoint.

  • Amazing Shooting

    by Forgeddabout1t on 9/5/11US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Those women can sure shoot the ball! I was impressed with how fast Taurasi releases the ball when she shoots. Candace Parker is unstoppable left or right. It's too bad the rest of her team didn't play at the same intensity level that she did!

  • Terrible officials! Terrible calls!!!

    by sparky6111 on 8/9/11US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

I enjoyed the game very much, but this was a game where the officals needed glasses and made terrible calls for both teams. I know this has happened in many other games in the past, too! All in all the, game was wonderful, I just wish the Mercury could have made their last shot!!

by Pinkturtle on 8/9/11US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

The game was awesome. The game went into overtime and the Refs sucked!!!!!!!!!! but overall the game was great. I was able to see me favorite players Diana Taurasi, Penny Taylor, and Candice Dupree. Also found a few more DeWanna Bonner and Marie Ferdinand-Harris and Temeka Johnson. I have been watching the game for the past five - six years now and developing more and more favorites.
