Phoenix Mercury History

The Phoenix Mercury are a professional basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Founded in 1997, the Mercury are one of the league’s original eight franchises. The team reached their first Finals in 1998 and have made six total appearances, winning in 2007, 2009 and 2014. The Mercury’s legacy is marked by two major No. 1 picks: Diana Taurasi in 2004 and Brittney Griner in 2013. As members of the Mercury, Taurasi won the regular season MVP in 2009 and set multiple WNBA records, including most career points, most three-pointers and most field goals made, while Griner earned two Defensive Player of the Year Awards and broke several block records. Ahead of the 2025 season, Taurasi announced her retirement and the Mercury acquired five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas, who continues to hold the WNBA record for career triple-doubles.

  • Bench shines while stars watch.

by MisterKim on 6/22/12US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

With Taurasi, Taylor, Dupree, and Sanford all injured and in street clothes, the Mercury bench plus a very talented rookie guard played an intense and spirited full 48 minutes of basketball. I figured before the game, the highlights would amount to a talented hip hop squad doing their thing, but instead we were all impressed with some very exciting basketbal, and the fact that the Mercury won never hurts. Even the National Anthem was sung very impressively. If you skipped the game, you missed a good time.

  • Nail biter finish

by Dukeandhissweetheart on 6/22/12US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

I told my sweetheart during the beginning of the fourth quarter that I had a feeling this was going to end as a nail biter. She choose to spend the last few seconds in the exit tunnel and I stood and cheered from my seat.

I love going to the Mercury games and a hot dog and drink was a bonus.

I took my 9 year old daughter and we had a lot of fun. The meal deal is not worth it though. You get a tiny hot dog and kids size drink. I still had to purchase food because we were both still hungry.

We saw some great basketball between the Mercury and Sparks. Unfortunately Diana Taurasi was still battling thru and injury and the Mercury lost to the Candace Parker led LA Sparks.

Took daughter for surprise birthday present, and she enjoyed it so much we plan on attending another game in the future. Had a great time, and was very affordable.

  • Height versus speed

by Dukeandhissweetheart on 6/11/12US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

The game was close early on with the height of the Japanese team being a negative they made up in speed. Speed should be the Mercury middle name and we prevailed.

by asianval on 9/20/11US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

What an amazing Phoenix Mercury team! I sat a few rows up from the center court, met people whom I've adored for years (Such as Cheryl Miller, Bridget Pettis, Ben York and Katie Smith) and cheered with the best fan base in the WNBA! I would go again if I had the chance!

My sweetheart and I had the time of our life. My sweethearts hands where all red from clapping. Her body was aching the next day from dancing around so much. Our Mercury played like the true CHAMPIONS that they are.

  • Exciting, Teriffic,Playoff game

by funvince on 9/19/11US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

This was the most excting Mercury game I attended. The crowd was Loud and got behind the team. It was an amazing display of talent from Bonner,Dupree, Taylor & Tarurasi. When you watch it on Tv , you don't hear or feel the energy level. I hope that can play another great game tonight. I want to go to another playoff game. Go Mercury!

  • Mercury Delivers

by RonniePlaya on 9/19/11US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Attending the Mercury game on Saturday was one of the most pleasant surprises that I've had in years. I guess I wasn't expecting much, but indeed the play was hard fought and awesome or I guess amazing is the term. The expectation, compared to what the product delivered was overwhelming. There was non-stop entertainment, love the hip hop kids and their extra contribution and energy. The support from the fans was something I have not seen in a very long time. Congratulations on a terrific season - AGAIN, and best of luck. I'll be watching tonight and rooting my ..........face off. And ride the light rail in, a very nice way to travel, I'll do it every time I go to my Mercury, Suns and DBack games from this point forward. I attended the NCAA Ladies final a couple years ago, and the energy ws flat compared to this. Connecticut (I'm a fan) clobbered Louisville, so maybe that played a part.

  • Mercury were awesome!

Simply fantastic! Had a lot of fun. Play with level heads tonight in Seattle.
