Phoenix Mercury History

The Phoenix Mercury are a professional basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Founded in 1997, the Mercury are one of the league’s original eight franchises. The team reached their first Finals in 1998 and have made six total appearances, winning in 2007, 2009 and 2014. The Mercury’s legacy is marked by two major No. 1 picks: Diana Taurasi in 2004 and Brittney Griner in 2013. As members of the Mercury, Taurasi won the regular season MVP in 2009 and set multiple WNBA records, including most career points, most three-pointers and most field goals made, while Griner earned two Defensive Player of the Year Awards and broke several block records. Ahead of the 2025 season, Taurasi announced her retirement and the Mercury acquired five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas, who continues to hold the WNBA record for career triple-doubles.

  • Griner vs. Delle Donne amazing!

by Johnnylawrence on 5/29/13US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

The Mercury organization put on quite a show. Although we lost by 20, thanks to a cold shooting streak in 1st qtr and 3 Griner fouls which kept her on the bench in 2nd qtr, the team competed until the final minute. The environment was loud and fun.....our 11 year old even loved it! Kids were allowed on the court to shoot a free throw while flanked by the Hip Hop Crew after the game. Can't wait to see Brittney and Elena match up again......they are both amazing athletes!

  • Not Worth It!

    by Joe217 on 5/29/13US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 1 out of 5

The tickets come with a club entrance, food and drink. The food was terrible and the only drinks included was soda and water. Season ticket holders had coupons for beer and wine. We sat in similar seats last season and beer and wine was included for all, we were not season ticket holders last year either.

  • Birthday adventure

by Chandlerdad on 5/29/13US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Rode the light rail with my daughter to catch the home opener for her birthday. Very enjoyable experience. We had only been to one Mercury game before and I heard many people discussing how packed it was. Very passionate fan base.

  • Saw Three Home Games; Lost All Three

by RichardLydia on 10/2/12Three Home Games in July - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

I live in San Francisco but spent a week in Phoenix just to see three Mercury home games in July. Well it was 115 degrees and well they lost all three games but it was kind of expected due to their horrific injuries. They still played their hearts out. I was impressed and will return again next year. Imagine how good they will be. Their bench got a lot of experience this year and their bench alone will clean many a clock next year. Sammy Prahalis (my favorite player) will have a year experience and everyone will be healthy. More amazing, the Mercury gets the no. 1 draft pick this year. What does this suggest? They might be almost unbeatable next year with the most exciting offense in the league. Cannot wait for the season opener.

  • Phoenix Mercury never disappoints!

by asianval on 9/27/12US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

US Airways Center is always a great atmosphere during the WNBA season and the Phoenix Mercury never disappoints. These ladies played hard this season despite all the injuries. Can't wait for next season especially with the Mercury having the #1 WNBA draft pick! This club will be SCARY GOOD next year! Definitely worth the trip from California to AZ. I'll always go out of my way to watch my Phoenix Mercury.

  • by DeberDo on 9/16/12US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 1 out of 5

The Mercury has lost every single home game that I have attended this season. This last game I paid for a full price ticket, didn't get to see the star starters play, wasn't even entertained the least little bit and had to endure another game loss. Thats it for me... no more Mercury games in my future.

  • Half time

by Dukeandhissweetheart on 9/15/12US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 3 out of 5

We where in this game until the third quarter and then it happened. The points kept on piling on us. There was NO stopping the SUN.

  • by Dukeandhissweetheart on 8/25/12US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 3 out of 5

We should have used Diana and put a WIN in the column.

  • Mercury missed a key player!

by lsnyder on 8/21/12US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 3 out of 5

Although I enjoyed the seats, the fans, and the hip-hop squad, the Phoenix Mercury did not play ball with all their players! Taurasi should have played and I don't buy the dental work excuse. The team should have made an announcement. Our family went to see Diana play and were frustrated when she didn't even enter the building.

  • by Bivy on 8/21/12US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

Was a new event for me to attend and enjoyed the facilities, the spirited excitement, and the ongoing entertainment. However, was disappointed that the Mercury's star players did not play and they were defeated by 30 + points.

  • The Mercury Game was awesome!!

    by ilopez4747 on 7/16/12US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

I enjoyed the game very much. It has been my second time going to the Mercury games. I like all the free stuff they give out and the entertainment for the children is great.

  • Great Experience - US Airways Center is Great

by RichardLydia on 7/15/12US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Very good experience. Will do this again next year.

  • by Anonymous on 7/12/12US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Fantastic seats, great view of the court, right along the visitor's tunnel. These seats are as closed to the court as you can ask for without spending bank! The only drawback was that the backboard slightly impeded your view of a portion of the court, but that is a trade off that I would make again in a heartbeat.

  • Beat LA

by Dukeandhissweetheart on 7/12/12US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 3 out of 5

We where keeping it close during the first half and then we just stopped running. You could tell the girls where out of steam. When none of our baskets would drop the game went to the Sparks.

  • Exciting

by Anonymous on 7/9/12US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Always nice to see a WNBA game but this one was amazing. Went to double OT.

  • The game and atomsphere was amazing..!!!!

    by crazyone11 on 6/27/12US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Had a fabulous time. Game was exciting, eats were really good at the Tilted Kilt. Parking and exitng area was awesome. Well thought out by the city planners.

  • by Anonymous on 6/25/12US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

It was a lot of fun. Especially, since it was our grand daughter's first time at a basketball game. She loved yelling D-Fence & loved the train in the fourth quarter. We would definitely go again. The original seats were very good but the seats that we were upgraded to were very very good :-)

  • Mercury game

by Anonymous on 6/25/12US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

The game was exciting and they almost pulled out another win without the starters.

  • Title IX at 40

by Anonymous on 6/25/12US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Disappointed that no information available that multiple players from both teams would not be playing until game time. Hope Solo at halftime - everyone really needs to watch a video of her interview. It was inspiring and from the heart.

  • Great time at the Mercury game

by GrannyLynn on 6/22/12US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

We took our 9 yr old granddaughter to the game and always love promoting women's sports with her. Lots of high energy, even from a smaller crowd, and it was lots of fun watching the team come back from a deficit to win the game in the last few seconds. Had great seats at a great price and they are a much more comfortable and roomier than the ones at Chase Field so really appreciate that. Easy parking too and an all-round fun evening.
