Phoenix Mercury History

The Phoenix Mercury are a professional basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Founded in 1997, the Mercury are one of the league’s original eight franchises. The team reached their first Finals in 1998 and have made six total appearances, winning in 2007, 2009 and 2014. The Mercury’s legacy is marked by two major No. 1 picks: Diana Taurasi in 2004 and Brittney Griner in 2013. As members of the Mercury, Taurasi won the regular season MVP in 2009 and set multiple WNBA records, including most career points, most three-pointers and most field goals made, while Griner earned two Defensive Player of the Year Awards and broke several block records. Ahead of the 2025 season, Taurasi announced her retirement and the Mercury acquired five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas, who continues to hold the WNBA record for career triple-doubles.

  • seeing DT up close was AMAZING!

This game was awesome! Sat right behind the bench. Would have given it 5stars but missed a couple plays because "Bob" the security guy wouldn't sit down...

  • Great basketball game

It was great to see a very good team play. Good thing it wasn't the Mercury. Griner was a non-factor: too slow and ponderous. No spark. The Lynx out-hustled, out-passed, and, overall, out-played the Mercury. But that was good as we were cheering for the Lynx.

  • Great Mercury Fun

The Phoenix Mercury has a great fan base who really get into the excitement of the game. Lots of entertainment plus very good basketball. I highly recommend it to anyone considering going to a Mercury game!

Both my boyfriend and I really enjoyed the Mercury game against L.A. Sparks. The evolution of the womens game is awesome, being a basketball player and coach myself. I am most defintely going again.

  • Great Game - Great Time

    by Randy711 on 6/16/13US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

I took my 11year old granddaughter to the Phoenix Mercury - LA Sparks game. It was a great game and we both had a great time. The Mercury won and scored 97 points. Obviously Britney Griner was a crowd favorite and she showed signs of being a superstar. Diana Taurasi was dominant with 33 points. My favorite player DeWanna Bonner had an awsome game and scored 23 points. The Mercury have a lot of firepower this year. They're a lot of fun to watch.

  • Loved the game... Supporting Women's Sports!!

Game was fast paced and exciting... Love what Brittney and Delle Donne bring to the game.

  • Mercury season opener

by azwinter on 6/2/13US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 3 out of 5

The energy in the arena was fantastic! The game exciting, except Mercury played terrible the first half. Seats were good. Problem was I ordered my tickets on line and when I went to the will call box, new sales were also sold at the same box office. Someone in front of the line took very long and as a result I did not get a Greiner t -shirt. Just missed it by two people. In Mn. they have only will call boxes and it speeds the time up. Should not mix will call with new sales.

  • 2 dunks but a big 0 in the win column

    by rexy11 on 5/30/13US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 2 out of 5

The Mercury looked tired and throughout the game played with no sense of urgency. I believe there are high expectations of the players that took the court on Monday. Seeing Britney Griner celebrate her dunks with a fist pump and very slowly get back on defense I can only hope did not go unnoticed by the coaching staff.

We enjoyed our first Phoenix Mercury game and liked our seats.

  • BAD SCENE

by LUNCHMAN on 5/29/13US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 2 out of 5

WENT TO SEE A BASKETBALL GAME NOT A HIP-HOP SHOW. TOO MANY DISTRACTIONS TO ALLOW ENJOYMENT OF BASKETBALL GAME.

  • Great Experience

by KAMMsTheACE on 5/29/13US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Great experience overall. $10 for parking, typical arena priced concessions, friendly atmosphere and super easy to find our seats. We enjoyed see 2 of the top 3 2013 WNBA draft picks, Griner & Delle Donne play. Awesome arena, awesome fans, good game.

  • Tremendous Fun

    by MercFan1 on 5/29/13US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

The Phoenix Mercury really know how to put on a great show. Intense, top quality basketball played by some of the worlds top hoop stars. In addition, the environment is very fan friendly. If you've never been to a Mercury game, you simply have to see what you've been missing.

  • Phoenix Mercury v Chicago Sky

by MrsNoah on 5/29/13US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

Would be 5 stars if we had won - great experience - so good to see so many families at the game! A great thing to do for summer fun!

  • by Hvacmaster on 5/29/13US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

The game was a great experience. Terrific lower level seats cost a tenth of comparable NBA tickets. The overall presentation beyond the game itself was first class and the action very entertaining as well. Even if you don't think you would enjoy women's basketball I encourage you to giv it a try.

  • Bad Coaching

by PRPHX on 5/29/13US Airways Center - PhoenixRating: 1 out of 5

Griner misused away from low post; incompetent pick and roll; Taurasi asleep on defense as Prince scores 26; her post-game statement that everyone needs to get their touches fails to recognize new reality of dominant center and effectiveness of inside-outside play in freeing up outside shooters; too much dribbling by Prahalis.
