Phoenix Mercury History
The Phoenix Mercury are a professional basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Founded in 1997, the Mercury are one of the league’s original eight franchises. The team reached their first Finals in 1998 and have made six total appearances, winning in 2007, 2009 and 2014. The Mercury’s legacy is marked by two major No. 1 picks: Diana Taurasi in 2004 and Brittney Griner in 2013. As members of the Mercury, Taurasi won the regular season MVP in 2009 and set multiple WNBA records, including most career points, most three-pointers and most field goals made, while Griner earned two Defensive Player of the Year Awards and broke several block records. Ahead of the 2025 season, Taurasi announced her retirement and the Mercury acquired five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas, who continues to hold the WNBA record for career triple-doubles.

Phoenix Mercury at Mortgage Matchup Center (formerly PHX Arena)
Mortgage Matchup Center, formerly Footprint Center and PHX Arena, has become known to Mercury fans as the “Purple Palace.” Mortgage Matchup Center has hosted the team since their inaugural season in 1997. Through the years, the 18,422-seat facility has hosted several WNBA Finals matches, as well as three of the league’s All-Star games in 2000, 2014 and 2024. The Mercury share Mortgage Matchup Center with the NBA’s Phoenix Suns, and the arena is one block away from Chase Field, home of MLB’s Arizona Diamondbacks.

The seats purchased for September 2, 2014 Phoenix Mercury Finals were spacious and drew me into the game and the crowd. The Phoenix Mercury dancers did a great job engaging the Fans. We had so much fun!
This was a amazing game BG with 8 blocked shots. DT shooting from everywhere. What a total team effort! Everyone flows so well together!
A terrific game. The Minnesota Lynx kept it close until the 4th quarter. The number 1 Mercury pulled away in dominating fashion ,leaving no doubt that they were much better than the Lynx. On to the title game against the Chicago Sky. The Mercury will win in 3 and become the 2014 WMBA Champions again.
One of the best basketball games ever--women or men....Diana Taurasi is the best woman basketball player in the world. Kobe does not call her the "white Mamba" for nothing.
I was nearly court side and enjoyed the game. Mercury played really well and the crowd was behind them the whole way.
Seeing all 5 starters score in "double figures" - AWESOME!!! Seeing Maya Moore being held to "single digit" scoring - can you say "SHUTDOWN" Great job MIGHTY MERCURY!!!!

First time at a Mercury game. The most unforgettable, fun, thrilling exciting sporting event ever! This is the most engaged, happy crowd. Can't wait to go again!
This game was exciting . It should not have been this close . The mercury players were not shooting well and did not attack the basket. Luckily D.T. came though with 34 points to lead us to victory.
The whole event was amazing! From waiting in the lobby seeing Mercurys dance squad to warm ups, then tip off, entertainment during time outs, catching a T-shirt, then seeing all those plays. WoW....just WoW!!
A very memorable event that is forever engraved in our hearts. We are ready for more events. Thank you & I need to spend a little more money to get autographs. :-)

There was "no better place to be" than a game with playoff implications and an atmosphere that "opens the flood gates" with Excitement !!!!
Great Game!! This was an important game for the Mercury. Took my daughter and she had a blast!
Diana Tourasi is such a dirty player. Each game I watch, if the Mercury are not doing well, she does something dirty, i.e., shoving a player when they're not looking, screaming obscenities at the referees, etc. Although touted as a role model, I wouldn't let my daughter emulate such a person. The game was great, anyway, because the Lynx were simply wiping the floor with the Mercury most of the game. The Mercury got extremely lucky to win by two. Here come the playoffs. Watch out for the Minnesota Lynx!!
This game was so exciting the whole game through. It had a playoff atmosphere! I screamed and yelled and cheered them on the whole game!
