About

Phil Collins in Concert

Born in West London in 1951, Phil Collins started playing drums at the age of five. His musical career began in earnest when he joined Genesis as a drummer in 1970, later becoming the group's lead vocalist in 1975 when Peter Gabriel departed. In 1981, he launched his solo career, releasing a string of pop albums that catapulted him to the immense profile he enjoys today. Phil Collins has released eight studio albums over the course of his solo career, along with three compilations, two soundtracks and more than forty singles. Of Collins' many releases, his third studio album, No Jacket Required, secured his greatest acclaim. It features notable tracks like "Sussudio" and "One More Night," both of which have received countless pop-culture references throughout the years. Collins is one of the legends of the 1970s and 1980s, a member of the Songwriter's Hall Of Fame, Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, Modern Drummer Hall Of Fame and a musical influence to later musicians like Mike Portnoy, Taylor Hawkins, Nick D'Virgilio and many others.

Former Genesis member Phil Collins has achieved a level of solo success few others can claim. Collins' tour dates, such as his 2017 Not Dead Yet Tour, have seen him travel the United Kingdom. Other tours, like his 1997 The Trip Into The Light Of The World Tour, his 1985 No Jacket Required Tour, and 1983 Hello, I Must Be Going Tour, have taken him throughout Europe, North America, Asia and Oceania. As a solo act, Phil Collins is praised for his brilliant Pop songwriting, laced with elements from the other genres in which he's fluent like jazz, rock and fusion. His strong vocals, intricate drum parts and generous use of 1980s-style keyboard synths add to the richness of his sound. In concert, audiences can marvel as Collins sits majestically, belting out hits while his large band provides ample accompaniment. Collins' son Nicholas is often present, dazzling crowds with drumming just as impressive as his father's. Phil Collins' music has garnered impressive numbers. His albums have sold more than 150 million units worldwide. He's been nominated for more than 20 Grammy Awards. He's won 7 Grammys, along with various American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, Brit Awards (and more) as he continues to record and perform across the globe.

In 2015, Collins remastered his eight solo albums with previously unreleased material and came out of retirement. In 2017, he started The Not Dead Yet Tour, named after his autobiography released in 2016. After many tour legs around the world, Collins is coming back to the U.S. for 15 dates.

    Phil still has it!

by Lou on 10/22/19Talking Stick Resort Arena - Phoenix

Phil is definitely not dead yet. What an awesome concert! He was funny interacting with the crowd to introduce the concert and the Genesis songs he played, his band sounded awesome as usual with all the same names that have toured with him for 40 years. His son Nicholas is absolutely awesome on the drums and the setlist was great. I would have liked to hear some songs from Both Sides and Testify, but still a great and memorable setlist from all of Plhis hits over the last 30-40 years. I'm so glad we got to go and that he came to Phoenix.

    Phil Collins

by C. on 10/22/19Talking Stick Resort Arena - Phoenix

It was so great. I was worried about an unruly crowd, but everyone was very respectful and polite. Yes we screamed and cheered, danced and sang, but when we all had to walk in and back out afterwards we heard no bad language or pushing or shoving. And the show was spectacular. Thank you!!

Phil Collins great, the Chase Center not so much

by sfanto on 10/22/19Chase Center - San Francisco

Even at the end of a long tour Phil still had the voice, energy & charisma to put on a great show and entertain the audience. The mid-show drummig went on a bit long - but u could see he's proud of his son. No matter how good the performers though, the Chase Center sucks as a venue for live music. A great cavernous space with no feel or connection with the band in the distance, abysmal acoustics and tiny seats with next to no legroom - forget leaving your seat in mid show, the chance of tripping and falling a couple rows is too high. just cross your legs and make the first beer last.

    Wonderful!

by Laura on 10/22/19Chase Center - San Francisco

This was my first time seeing Phil Collins in concert and it couldn’t have been more wonderful. He played a nice variety of songs, including three from his time in Genesis. Despite his health issues, which kept him seated for most of the show, he still sounded great and put on one heck of a show. As someone who grew up listening to Phil Collins’ music, it truly was a dream come true to see him in concert.

    Might as well be dead

by Concert Guy on 10/21/19Chase Center - San Francisco

Sadly Phil Collins is a shell of his former self. No longer able to play drums he just sits on a chair and croaks out the oldies. This wouldn't be too bad if his voice was up to snuff but sadly that's not the case. He sounds raspy and higher pitched than normal

    Bucket List

by RMFS on 10/21/19CHI Health Center Omaha - Omaha

The seating and the show were both great! The venue was awesome and easy to get around in. My wife and I had Phil Collins on our bucket list of musicians and it was everything we hoped for and more! She said it was her favorite concert to date.

    Best concert in AGES

by funhuntress on 10/21/19Chase Center - San Francisco

Phil Collins was the bomb! Played for 2 solid hours despite recent back surgery and having to use a cane and sit for most of the concert. His band is amazing: long timers with the band, new comers, and his son to top it off. And the background singers did their jobs and more. Run, do not walk if you get a chance to see him. You will not regret it.

    Collins (& Son)

by Tbone on 10/21/19Chase Center - San Francisco

Great show overall. Band was tight, singers were solid. It was cool seeing Phil's son on the drums, which he played pretty damn well. Sad seeing Phil looking so old and tired and just sitting in a chair for the entire night. Yes, I get it...he did just have serious back surgery. I wish he could have played a few more songs and we would have loved more tunes from Face Value. I get the feeling that this may be his last tour on the West Coast and that would be disappointing if that's the case..

    I loved it!

by AmySchroll81 on 10/21/19Chase Center - San Francisco

The entire crowd was so into the show - it was awesome. Everyone singing along to all the songs, and he played 99% hits, only one song I didn't know well. It was outstanding. Just about the entire place stayed until the very end. It was so good we didn't get out of our seats once he came on stage - not even to get more food/drinks! His son with him was amazing also :)

    Once in a lifetime!

by fs on 10/21/19Chase Center - San Francisco

Phil sounded almost exactly the same. The Chase Center sound system was great. Phil played all of his hits, including ones with Genesis, and we couldn't have been more pleased. Awesome concert!!

Phil Collins was great but no more concerts in San Francisco

    by A. M. on 10/21/19Chase Center - San Francisco

Phil Collins was great, but the whole city and the venue are all about $$$$. I purchased my tickets and we were in the first level up second row. When we got there, the venue added an entire new seating area that wasn't available to purchase when I bought my tickets. Two drinks at the venue were $40.00 and none of the restaurants opened until an hour before the show. i wanted to buy a shirt but the line was taking to long and I didn't want to miss the first song. Ticketmaster charged $50.00 for parking, but the venue charged $40.00 so I am not sure why you pay more on here. Outside food vendor wouldn't take case for food, they only take credit which is shady to me. Hotels were outrageous so we ended up driving home which saved us hundreds of dollars.

    Phil still has it!

by VikingFanAZ on 10/21/19Talking Stick Resort Arena - Phoenix

Even though he was sitting most of the show due to health issues, his voice is still there, as well as his charm and sense of humor. Glad I got to see him before he retires for good. SEE THIS SHOW IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE!

It pains me to say it

    by n. s. on 10/21/19Chase Center - San Francisco

Phil has had a number of medical issues over the past few years that prevents him from playing the piano or drums. He also has difficulty walking, requiring that he use a cane. The result is that he sits in a chair the entire concert. Despite the efforts of the band and backup singers, the show lacked energy. I saw Genesis many years (decades) ago. This show doesn't come close to that show. If I'd known in advance about Phil's issues, I wouldn't have purchased tickets to the show. It's unfortunate because I am a big fan

    Philly in the city

    by D. S. on 10/21/19Chase Center - San Francisco

Transportation went smooth with Bart n MUNI. The Chase stadium beautiful outside. Plenty of food to choose from. I had a delicious deli sandwich. Seats are to small. They made it so steep not comfortable to even stand. Sound wasn’t very good. Phil Collins was wonderful! Won’t go there again 😞

    1st time seeing Phil Collins

by R. B. on 10/21/19Talking Stick Resort Arena - Phoenix

Phil has a hard impact on my life. He was awesome! I was expecting different, as I have watched the concert videos through time. Then I realized his ailments which I was unaware of. I have read the articles from the critics. How sad are the critics to not realize that they will be there one day! Seeing Phil was on my bucket list, I am so happy that I was able to go as obviously this is probably his last concert. This tour will go down in history for Phil. He gave us all one last shot to experience him. I can't thank him enough to give us his all one last time. It was an honor

    Very Much Alive

by D. on 10/21/19PPG Paints Arena - Pittsburgh

I am a huge Phil Collins and Genesis fan. It has been a long time since I have seen him perform. I didn't know what to expect. My heart dropped when he walked up the steps to get to the stage, and i was in tears seeing him walking with a cane. I am basically a groupie when he tours. Oh, i don't hang around backstage, but I follow his tours and buy tons of souvenirs, lots and lots. This tour was no different, and I followed him to Newark, Boston, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Columbus, and finally to Pittsburgh. My tears and worries vanished as soon as i heard his voice! His voice, his talent, and his personality are the same! He voicecis supreme. He didn't miss a beat nor a lyric. Phil Collins music and voice are therapy for me. He lyrics and music help me deal with life's tough lessons to learn. I could easily tell he is proud of his son, and his talent has passed to his son. His pride shows in his voice, his introduction, and his quips about their relationship. Phil Collins is very much alive. I have not given up on him. I certainly don't see him as a dead performer, and i hope he doesn't see himself that way either! His fan base is still there, and i noticed younger generations drawn to his concerts. Please continue to write, compose, and perform, Mr. Collins! Your fans did not leave you, and your talent has not left you either!

Lots of old hits but showing his age and poor health

by B.H. on 10/21/19Chase Center - San Francisco

Phil Collins's music is still relevant and enjoyable today as many people in the arena would attest to. However, I had not expected him to walk with a cane though and spend most of the performance seated in a chair. He played almost no instruments and seemed to sing at a higher pitch than I'm used to. Almost sounded in place like he had sucked on some helium prior to the concert. He also showed his age by making some awkward jokes in between songs. He had a large band with him, including his son Nicholas on the drums (as well as another drummer, and they even did a piece called the Drum Trio, with Phill Collins on cajón drums). He had lots of backing vocalists which made me think his voice isn't what it used to be. Overall it was a pleasant enough experience but not worth the big bucks that the new Chase Arena charges. The venue is a huge improvement on Oakland's Oracle Arena though. It is more spacious and the food and drink selection seems better. However, it was still crowded before this concert and there were long security lines because they only opened the doors at 7pm. So silly. Lots of food kiosks were closed. The ones that weren't had long lines. Sometimes you have to wonder if these businesses actually want to make money or not. It's not exactly cheap. And finally, some fans still misbehave, new arena or not. Try to sit in the front rows if you can afford it, otherwise there will always be disturbances from people getting food, drinks, going to the bathroom. Even though smoking of any kind is strictly prohibited in the arena, there were people lighting up pot in the row in front of me, yet the security did not seem to care.

Phil got me in my feels

by ShanB on 10/21/19PPG Paints Arena - Pittsburgh

I have been waiting for the day to see Phil Collins live and in concert. My mom and I got tickets and boy oh boy did we drop the big dollars but it was worth it and I have no regrets. Even at his old age he put on a great show and gave me an experience I will never forget and I’m very thankful for the opportunity that I got to see him probably for his last tour he may ever go on. EVERYONE GO SEE PHIL. THX.
