Surprised and Disappointed...
by Ms. Morris on 6/6/25Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts - GreensboroRating: 2 out of 5Peabo Bryson still has a beautiful, clear singing voice. I'm so glad that I got a chance to hear it live and in person since I have listened to it for so many years--first on the radio and on LP albums; later on iHeartRadio and Spotify. At the beginning of the concert, Mr. Bryson expressed his pride in amassing a "great catalogue of music". But what good is an amassed music catalogue if you choose not to sing from it? My disappointment came when Mr. Bryson chose to sing a quick medley of 4 of his greatest solo hit songs. Instead, Mr. Bryson chose to perform 7-8 covers of deceased artists' songs. Some of these songs Mr. Bryson should not have sung at all. He sung the following songs in full: Prince (When Doves Cry), Bill Withers (Lovely Day), Al Jarreau (Good Morning), Bobby Caldwell (What You Won't Do for Love), Angela Bofill (I Try), Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack (Where is the Love) and 2 James Ingram songs. I had a floor seat to THAT concert and I didn't expect the show to be littered with so many cover songs. The show needs to be revamped to include an era-appropriate female artist, such as Patti Austin or Angela Winbush, that can sing the duet songs that Mr. Bryson wants and needs to perform--from his own catalogue.
