About

Singer and actress Patti LuPone’s career in Broadway and Hollywood spans four decades. She is a multiple GRAMMY® and Tony Award winner, inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2006.

Since establishing herself with a Tony Award-winning performance as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita, she has impressed audiences and critics alike in Les Miserables, Sunset Boulevard, Sweeney Todd and Gypsy (for which she won another Tony Award in 2008).

In Don’t Monkey with Broadway, Patti LuPone explores, through indelible interpretations of classic Broadway show tunes by the likes of Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart, Jule Styne, Stephen Schwartz, Charles Strouse,  Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim,  Cole Porter and Irving Berlin, how her life-long love affair with Broadway began and her concern for what Manhattan’s Theatre District -  the Great White Way -  is becoming today.

Few performers show the kind of dedication and commitment to their material, and to connecting with their audience, as this GRAMMY®  and Tony Award-winning star.  It’s little exaggeration to state that LuPone has outdone herself with her new show, which debuted in New York to raucous cheers.

    Disappointed

by jasjer99 on 3/4/14New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

Mandy Patinkin's voice was wonderful but he overwhelmed Patti Lupone. The show was bare focusing solely on their singing. Very little dance or action. Was just okay.

    Time stands still

by Tomthecello on 3/4/14New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

During their 15 minute duet from Carousel, LuPone and Patinkin make time stand still. A transcendent experience . I don't think I'll ever forget it.

    Amazing

by SaddleBrookPatron on 3/4/14New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

I absolutely loved the mandy p and patti l show. Their solos and combined songs were even better than I had hoped. Their voices are unbelievable . They needed little if any accompaniment. I had never heard Mandy Patinkin sing before, indeed I only knew him as an actor. What a talent, truly amazing. I am so happy to have had the opportunity to see and hear them both in person. Also, love the venue.

    An emotional evening for me

by Boff1 on 3/4/14New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

The only reason I didn't say this was 5-star-amazing is because we were in the front row of the 4th balcony and NJPAC doesn't seem to balance the sound for us people up there. The first several numbers were really soft and LuPone's and Patinkin's voices were drowned out by the piano and bass... But eventually our ears got used to straining to hear and it got a little better. I've been a fan of Evita since I saw the show in the West End in 1983... However, I like the Broadway soundtrack much better because of LuPone and Patinkin. They sing with such heart and I just loved being able to finally see the two of them together. They both sounded great.

    very disappointing

by BobOtis on 3/4/14New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

Evening started with the CEO of NJPAC coming out for a ten minute commercial! Did not buy tickets to listen to him trying to pump up some other event. My wife and I have seen Mandy many times before and Patti once. This performance was so uncomfortable. Poor sound. Both singers were "a bit pitchy" as they say on TV. The performances seemed more vaudeville than concert. A large venue like NJPAC needs more than just a piano player and bass to fill the room. Mandy and Patti, please let someone else pick the set list and just stand there and sing the songs as they were written. Two tremendous talents wasted that night.

    Patti Lupone was great

by JimJG on 2/3/14Balboa Theatre - San Diego

We loved her performance and regret that she didn't do more songs from her Broadway repertoire such as Evita, Gypsy, Les Miserables. We would have preferred that it began at 7:00 pm instead of 8:00 pm.

Inferior material led to mediocre performance. Did little to showcase Ms Lapone's great talent. Very disappointing

    Patti Lupone is amazingly talented

by Anonymous on 2/3/14Balboa Theatre - San Diego

Not sure if it was the sound system or an off night. I couldn't always here her words from my balcony seat. Surprisingly I heard her best when she talked and sang without the band and just overhead microphones. There is a theatrical flare in her performance I have previously had spine tingling moments listening to her. Saw her in "Evita" many years ago and fewer years ago in "Gypsy". Amazing performer, maybe my expectations were too high. Or maybe I should have been in the orchestra, although I had a nice central balcony seat Band sounded great

    Patty Lupone and Mandy Patinkin

by istrian on 10/15/12Tilles Center Concert Hall - Greenvale

The show was fabulous! My husband and I went. Patty and Mandy gave a wonderful performance of many show tunes written by the best composers and lyricists that musical theater has to offer. Patty and Mandy did a wonderful job of tying all the music into coherent vignettes.

    a wonderfully delightful evening

by Petemcl on 10/15/12Tilles Center Concert Hall - Greenvale

Patti and Mandy have such charisma together and their choices of a combination of Broadway standards mixed with little known, but entirely appropriate songs allowed them to give a most entertaining performance. The simple set and on stage piano and bass players allowed the audience to focus on the two performers and be touched, amused and completely mesmerized throughout the evening

    Dynamic Duo

by Anonymous on 10/15/12Tilles Center Concert Hall - Greenvale

Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin were delightful. They sang an array of old Broadway songs With nostalgia and emotion. They have beautiful voices and were entertaining without backup singers, dancers, fire and lasers that many of today's entertainers need to entertain. Good old fashioned talent and banter. Absolutely worth seeing!!!

    A Tremendous Voice

by HugeCCRFan on 11/11/11Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts - Pittsburgh

The performance began right on time with the Pittsburgh Symphony, under the direction of Lawerence Loh, performing selections from West Side Story, Evita, A Little Night Music and Les Miserables. As usual very well done and enjoyable and conductor Loh's rapport with the audience was great. A short intermission took place followed by Patti Lupone coming on stage with the Pittsburgh Symphony now being conducted by Rob Fisher. Ms Lupone was also accompanied by pianist Joseph Thalken. Without doubt she possesses a tremendous voice in range, quality and power. The performance was taken from her "Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda" show and it was a trip through her career starting as a child. Ms Lupone performed a number of tunes that she is known for and added ones that she "Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda" done. Her edgy personality was evident in a good way throughout the evening as she told stories and performed. She is a polished entertainer and quite the character. Ms LuPone seemed to be having a very good time and finished the evening off with what appeared to be in impromptu song without backup and without microphone, a great wrap up of the performance. The only drawback for me was some of the songs that were selected as some were obscure tunes. She performed them well but I think she would have gotten a little more mileage had she performed show tunes that everyone was familiar with.
