Noah Lennox is the best human being alive

by theDZA on 10/4/11Webster Hall - New York

Panda Bear was great. I went to both the show at Webster Hall and the show at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple. These were my third and fourth times seeing him, but until now I had only seen him performing solo (no Sonic Boom). At first I was unsure about how necessary Sonic Boom was, but on the second night I found myself really appreciating and enjoying his additions. He frequently makes a clicky, swooshy noise that as far as I can tell isn't coming from Noah or his effects at all. It sounds to me like he's manipulating a delay effect on his own noises by either speeding up the repeat or slowing it down. Regardless, I thought it sounded good overall. Noah basically did what I expected, but it was unbelievable, of course. Both nights he played Tomboy in its entirety and in sequence, with the exception being the second night when he began the set with another jam I wasn't familiar with before going into "You Can Count On Me." Also both nights, he followed the Tomboy portion of his performance by "ending" his set, going backstage, and then returning a few minutes later once the crowd had roared enough. He came back for three songs doing "Ponytail," "Comfy In Nautica," and "Bros." I was really yelling for him to cap it off with "Take Pills" while he was doing the Person Pitch stuff, but oh well, he never did. I'm hoping for more live Panda Bear some time soon, or maybe some more new material (which I know, is unlikely right now). Or maybe we'll hear from Animal Collective again once Noah and Dave finish with getting their solo fixes. I heard they played a ton of new material at Coachella and such this year. Anyhow, it's very interesting to see how Noah is evolving musically and moving further away from sample-based, experimental material. While I love some elements of his style as it stands now, I still want him to use samples and effects more frequently. Can't wait to hear the music he brings to us next, whether it's solo or not!

    Rumbly

by dyaal on 10/3/11Webster Hall - New York

The music was unexpectedly great, when it could be discerned from the rumbling. The bass was mixed so high that nothing else was audible, which is great if you want an intestine massage, but suboptimal if you'd like to hear any of the melodies.

    Sweet chill vibes.

by BigDipperDigYouKnow on 7/5/11Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

MHOW was pretty chill that night, whit the exception of the un-chill "loud bros". They were so loud even the ducktails bro had to say something about it. Any way i was vibin' on some chillwaves when pandaBro came on with Sonic Boom bro. So that was chill. Then Pandy killed it. Totes a'some doo!

the songs played back to back seamlessly. Amazing lights and visuals. worth ever penny much better than governors island last summer!!! Which he could have pulled it together for the encore. Still amazing!

    Stunningly beautiful

by musicaldeviant on 7/5/11Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

I was in absolute awe the entire time Panda Bear played. The visual projections on the screen and the music put me in an amazing trance for the show! The venue is pretty small. Even with as few people as were there, the way Panda Bear played made it feel as if I were in a crowd of thousands. Brilliant concert!

Dance Music for the indie set

by powersofi on 7/5/11Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

Panda Bear's long-awaited LP Tomboy dropped a few months ago and the instantly hummable songs have become staples summer playlists. For his one-off appearance at Music Hall of WIlliamsburg (there is no proper Tomboy tour planned), Noah Lennox teamed up with Sonic Boom, the producer and musician who helped with the creation of Tomboy and together they played the entirety of the record. The best part about seeing these tunes in a live setting was the pounding sound system and the well executed visuals/projections. These turn the lovely but sometimes sedate songs on the album into rave anthems for the indie set. The crowd was quiet and respectful and even a bit dancey (at least near the front) during the approximate hour and ten minute set. Despite a massive outpouring of applause and whoops for an encore, none was forthcoming. Panda Bear simply plays out live rarely enough that if you get the chance to see him, you must go.

the ferry ride was cool....the music too cool

by cccccccc on 9/16/10The Beach At Governors Island - NYC

I loved taking the ferry to the island at night. The water was awesome looking, so were the buildings. The spot lights from ground zero kinda gave you goosebumps, but it was making a ton of birds get confused and stuck in the beam. Apparently they had to turn of the spot light because the birds risked using up all their energy stored for their migration. Anyways...Panda Bear was fun...but no one really danced and that was lame. Panda Bear is one of my favorite artists. The visuals were great. The beer was expensive, but only what was expected. ($7) I recommend trying out the island! and if you want to listen to some good tunes with a good beat, and cuddle with your lover in front of everyone, then this is the show for you!

Panda Bear's set was too short. The opening bands weren't too exciting. The visuals were gorgeous though. I wish Panda Bear played more music from his Person Pitch album.

    Great show

by daisy0701 on 9/13/10The Beach At Governors Island - NYC

This was an awesome experience and I had a great time. Taking a ferry from Manhattan to Governor's Island helped set the relaxed tone for the evening, and having never been to Governor's Island before, I was surprised at the serene setting and amazing view of the New York skyline. This was a well-chosen venue and the beer, food and restroom facilities were very good. We had a clear view of Ground Zero which was interesting being that this was the anniversary. Panda Bear did go on a little late, but I don't think anyone minded because we were all so chilled out. Great set, great crowd, great venue = overall amazing experience. I love Panda Bear.

It kind of sucked having to wait a half hour for the show to start. The three bands opening for Panda Bear were excessive and not really appreciated by everyone. Maybe if I had been stoned I would have enjoyed it more, but since I was sober, the show was just ok.

    Disappointment

by TheHamburgerlar on 9/13/10The Beach At Governors Island - NYC

I guess I must had been expecting more. I had been awaiting for months to see the show. But upon going to Govt. Island, I learned that there sound system/mixing is horrible. Nothing was mixed well, it was painful. All of Panda Bear's albums have been pretty well balance. Yes there is loud and strange sounds in his music, but live it was unbearable.
