Cirque du Soleil: OVO on Tour
Talk about creating a buzz. Touring circus company Cirque du Soleil's OVO offers a nonstop, life-affirming, two-hour tribute to the infinitely diverse world of insects. This sensual, acrobatically dazzling show premiered in 2009 as the Montreal-based circus company's 25th production since 1984. The cast for its premiere included 54 performing artists from 16 different countries. Created and directed by Deborah Colker, OVO (Portuguese for "egg") contemplates insects in all their beauty, action and curiosity. Brazilian composer Berna Ceppas transforms their flight, leaps, creeping and crawling into a samba-influenced choreographic spectacle augmented by the constant flutter and hum of real insect sounds.
With well over a thousand performances to date, OVO long ago took flight as one of the Cirque's most popular and rewarding extravaganzas. As Albany, New York's Times Union said of OVO in 2020, "In our digital age, it's reassuring to remember that non-simulated, filter-free entertainment still has the power to dazzle and transport us."
What is Cirque du Soleil: OVO?
Upon its Montreal debut in 2009, OVO became Cirque du Soleil's most audacious and virtuosic new-circus show to date. A trio of principal characters — Master Flipo, Foreigner and Ladybug — keeps this arena spectacular in constant motion, as awestruck insects become intensely interested in a mysterious egg's sudden appearance. OVO teems with life, and Cirque du Soleil's talented cast mirrors the insect world's natural abilities to fly, balance and leap with a lifetime of practice and precision.
During one of the company's largest flying acts, 10 scarab beetles on three platforms toss a single beetle back and forth. A colorfully costumed dragonfly flits about, red ants juggle chunks of kiwi and corncobs with their feet, and butterflies cling gracefully to one another as they float through the air. For OVO's grand finale, the large span used for brilliant lighting effects transforms into a two-story climbing wall onto which trampoline-powered crickets are hurled as though onto a vertical stage. Cockroaches, grasshoppers and other insects serve as supporting characters throughout the evening's dozen acrobatic tours de force.
Incredible performance as usual! worth every Pennie spend!
The show was amazing!! The costumes were awesome. Ditto for the acrobatics. You have to see the show. Oh, the theme for Ovo was cute.
We enjoyed the show, we will definitely do this again.
OVO was great entertainment for all of us. The story line was easy to follow. The kids enjoyed the little perks they did. Could have used more Photo Booth areas to ease the crowds waiting to take pictures of the set up (was not live performers).
I have seen 4 Cirque du Soleil performances. The talent and music is so amazing that I’m inspired to buy the soundtracks. Cirque du Soleil acrobats are second to none.
Loved the performance.Only problem was with our seats. After paying a premium price we were seated on the floor in folding chairs which were very uncomfortable. When selecting seats there is no way to see exactly what kind of seats you are getting.
The story, the costumes, the theatrics, the talent...from beginning to end, I don't think I stopped smiling. I am always in awe of the creativity of a cirque show, and this did not disappoint. I could go see it again and again.
First time ever seeing this type of entertainment, was excellent.
Overprice parking, low crowd and elevated stage made our front row seats view terrible
This was my first Cirque du Soleil and it was great. I had no idea what to expect but it was interesting and entertaining. I saw people come in dressed as bugs and fairies and now I know what all that was about. I loved the grasshoppers but the worm and the tree frogs-oh they were all fantastic. This is a very talented bunch for sure. Now I have the itch to see more.
10 stars!! The talent of these performers is unlike anything I have seen. Great job !
Make no mistake that the acrobatic display was fantastic, however the story was more for children than adults and overall was a quite a low brow show. Having seen Cirque du Soleil at the Royal Albert Hall a few years ago, I was hoping their Ovo show in New Orleans would be just as good. Sadly it was not. It seemed highly catered and dumbed down for either children or an American audience. The location was dreadful and the stadium overly commerical, uncomfortable and tasteless. What we were expecting to be an enjoyable evening (for not particularly cheap tickets) turned out to be fairly disappointing.
This was a very colorful and entertaining show. It had a good mixture of stunts and storytelling. My 3 year old granddaughter was very entertained.
I always enjoy Cirque du Soleil. They put on a magnificent performance. I'm glad they come to the OKC area.
For what felt like 50% of the show they shined spotlights in our face so we couldn't see. What we did see was great, but next time try sitting in the stands before you finalize lighting design so you don't torture your audience.
Such an entertaining display of talent. There wasn't a single moment that I wasn't entertained.Definitely worth the money!
Fantastic only word to describe it. One of the better traveling Cirque shows.
My family had such a great time at OVO. Everything was great, and my 4 year old loved it from the beginning till the end. Would recommend for families and anyone who loves Cirque du Soleil.
The show was great. But souvenirs were way too expensive not much variety of the bunch. The food was expensive. And the beer and cocktails were way too overpriced. A beer I paid like over $14. For a cocktail was more ice than anything in a tiny cup served .
First time took my granddaughter and daughter we had a wonderful time , I look forward to to seeing more of them !
