Cirque du Soleil: OVO on Tour

Talk about creating a buzz. Touring circus company Cirque du Soleil's OVO offers a nonstop, life-affirming, two-hour tribute to the infinitely diverse world of insects. This sensual, acrobatically dazzling show premiered in 2009 as the Montreal-based circus company's 25th production since 1984. The cast for its premiere included 54 performing artists from 16 different countries. Created and directed by Deborah Colker, OVO (Portuguese for "egg") contemplates insects in all their beauty, action and curiosity. Brazilian composer Berna Ceppas transforms their flight, leaps, creeping and crawling into a samba-influenced choreographic spectacle augmented by the constant flutter and hum of real insect sounds.

With well over a thousand performances to date, OVO long ago took flight as one of the Cirque's most popular and rewarding extravaganzas. As Albany, New York's Times Union said of OVO in 2020, "In our digital age, it's reassuring to remember that non-simulated, filter-free entertainment still has the power to dazzle and transport us."

What is Cirque du Soleil: OVO?

Upon its Montreal debut in 2009, OVO became Cirque du Soleil's most audacious and virtuosic new-circus show to date. A trio of principal characters — Master Flipo, Foreigner and Ladybug — keeps this arena spectacular in constant motion, as awestruck insects become intensely interested in a mysterious egg's sudden appearance. OVO teems with life, and Cirque du Soleil's talented cast mirrors the insect world's natural abilities to fly, balance and leap with a lifetime of practice and precision.

During one of the company's largest flying acts, 10 scarab beetles on three platforms toss a single beetle back and forth. A colorfully costumed dragonfly flits about, red ants juggle chunks of kiwi and corncobs with their feet, and butterflies cling gracefully to one another as they float through the air. For OVO's grand finale, the large span used for brilliant lighting effects transforms into a two-story climbing wall onto which trampoline-powered crickets are hurled as though onto a vertical stage. Cockroaches, grasshoppers and other insects serve as supporting characters throughout the evening's dozen acrobatic tours de force.

  • Ovo was Extraordinary!!!!

This show was absolutely phenomenal. It was funny, moving, intimate, and everything in between. My husband and I have wanted to go to a Cirque du Soleil show for years now but shows only came as close to Boston. So, when it came to Bangor Maine we jumped on the chance. It is worth every penny to go see. Hopefully they will decide to return with another show in the future. Thank you

Lively acrobatics, difficult things made easy, and an amusing plot to tie it together. All the performers were right on, and ran a very tight and entertaining show. I'd go again.

It was amazing. I splurged and got tickets way down in the front and it was so worth it. The costumes were spectacular and so were the acrobatics. I had such a good time. And I bought the music CD and it too is great. If you get a chance go!

My 2nd Soleil show and by far the best. They get better with each show. Good storytelling, brilliant acrobatics. It was funny, suspenseful, and super-entertaining!

  • #1 Memorable Colorful, Fun Party for all

    by ARN01 on 6/5/16Cross Insurance Center - BangorRating: 5 out of 5

The creativity of the story, the indescribably exuberant and beautiful costumes, and more over the incredible acrobatics accomplished by the group are something truly not to be missed!!! This is a circus act, but one that merged Salvador Dali's surrealism with the fun and pop of a Superbowl show by Kathy Perry!

  • Every act was amazing.

The entertainment was non-stop, engaging, and great for all ages. We have always heard Cirque du Soleil was worth the money. And yes it was!

  • OvO was Amazing!

An expensive night, but so worth it. The costumes were bright and creative, the tricks were new and/or updated. The picture screens were perfectly adapted to what was on stage at the time. The music, the fiddle, the tambourine were expertly played. I didn't want the show to end. The characters of the show interacted with the floor seat patrons which was a nice touch. The show had an adult theme, but few words were spoken. It was truly acted and a wonderful show that should not be missed!

  • Disappointed

by Teeea on 6/5/16Cross Insurance Center - BangorRating: 2 out of 5

We went to see Cirque du Soleil: Varekai last year and was blown away by ever aspect of the show. The costumes where amazing and there was something happening every where at all times. It was absolutely breath taking. I could have watched that show over and over again. Cirque du Soleil: OVO was such a disappointment on every thing. It did not even compare to Varekai. We kept on waiting for the wow factor, but alas there was none. Seeing how we drove two and a half hours to get there and then back it was quite disappointing.

  • OVO Incredible show

The singing, the costumes and the unbelievable dances, choreography, and the level of difficulty was truly amazing. The degree of difficulty was beyond belief!! They made it look so easy. I would HIGHLY recommend this show.

The costumes were over and above anything I had seen from Cirque de Soleil. The story was easy to follow and a delight to children and adults as well.

This was the most amazing and entertaining act I have seen in ten years. The performers were very energetic, talented and spot-on their acts. Each one was just a prelude to the even more enthralling next act. The support personnel are to be commended for their work as well. It was a thrilling experience to see so many talented people in one nights entertainment. I surely hope they came back to Maine again. I would bring my whole family next time.

I took my parents and my children and they were all mesmorized, and so was I! Both of my sons stood up and said that was so worth it at the end. The only draw back for us was not being able to see a few things because our seats were on the side but 95% could be seen from any angle. The show was truly spectacular!!

  • OUTSTANDING

by TigTink on 5/15/16The Oncenter War Memorial Arena - SyracuseRating: 5 out of 5

The show was amazing! It was all I had hoped it would be. Several Acts to keep you on the edge of your seat, comedy to keep you entertained - all in all a great family show. Would see this one again!

  • Cirque du Soleil was an unbelievable experience!

by Handbells on 5/14/16The Oncenter War Memorial Arena - SyracuseRating: 5 out of 5

The presentation was phenomenal! The grace, agility, and precision of the acts were thrilling to watch. The bug theme was fun and was carried through beautifully. The variety of acts was excellent and the change from one to the next was seamless. The staging enabled the characters to leave quickly and almost unseen. All of the space was used well...very creative to have some characters enter slowly at the beginning to give a hint of things to come. The interaction with the audience was great and fun to watch. This performance demonstrated a great team effort, with everyone having a special part to play for the good of the whole. I was delighted that a friend and I came to the program. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Thanks you for a memorable experiemce!!
