Cirque du Soleil: OVO on Tour
Talk about creating a buzz. Touring circus company Cirque du Soleil's OVO offers a nonstop, life-affirming, two-hour tribute to the infinitely diverse world of insects. This sensual, acrobatically dazzling show premiered in 2009 as the Montreal-based circus company's 25th production since 1984. The cast for its premiere included 54 performing artists from 16 different countries. Created and directed by Deborah Colker, OVO (Portuguese for "egg") contemplates insects in all their beauty, action and curiosity. Brazilian composer Berna Ceppas transforms their flight, leaps, creeping and crawling into a samba-influenced choreographic spectacle augmented by the constant flutter and hum of real insect sounds.
With well over a thousand performances to date, OVO long ago took flight as one of the Cirque's most popular and rewarding extravaganzas. As Albany, New York's Times Union said of OVO in 2020, "In our digital age, it's reassuring to remember that non-simulated, filter-free entertainment still has the power to dazzle and transport us."
What is Cirque du Soleil: OVO?
Upon its Montreal debut in 2009, OVO became Cirque du Soleil's most audacious and virtuosic new-circus show to date. A trio of principal characters — Master Flipo, Foreigner and Ladybug — keeps this arena spectacular in constant motion, as awestruck insects become intensely interested in a mysterious egg's sudden appearance. OVO teems with life, and Cirque du Soleil's talented cast mirrors the insect world's natural abilities to fly, balance and leap with a lifetime of practice and precision.
During one of the company's largest flying acts, 10 scarab beetles on three platforms toss a single beetle back and forth. A colorfully costumed dragonfly flits about, red ants juggle chunks of kiwi and corncobs with their feet, and butterflies cling gracefully to one another as they float through the air. For OVO's grand finale, the large span used for brilliant lighting effects transforms into a two-story climbing wall onto which trampoline-powered crickets are hurled as though onto a vertical stage. Cockroaches, grasshoppers and other insects serve as supporting characters throughout the evening's dozen acrobatic tours de force.
We have seen multiple shows over the years and they have all been great!
Cirque has once more proven that they never fail to leave one breathless and amazed. This show was a top notch program from start to finish!
The whole show was amazing. My kids are 5 and 9. I was a little worried they would lose interest, but they were enthralled by the performances. We were still talking about it the next morning.
The things that the performers are able to do with their bodies is so impressive that it's almost unbelievable! An amazing show with a great mix of fast and slow acts. I also loved the insect theme and the costumes were just fantastic.
I have been to several Cirque shows over the past few years and although this was not my favorite it was definitely worth seeing. Very colorful and entertaining. . Performers were very athletic and well trained. Music as always was very good. Overall a great family show.
The whole show is beyond excellent. The stunts are amazing! The rock wall stunts are flipping fantastic!!
Our seats were in the direct line of the flood lights many times, missing many acts. The sexual innuendos weren't necessary especially since I brought my 3 grandchildren under10. I was expecting more creative "insect/bug" manifestations along with much more activity throughout the stage. The music didn't resonate the movement of the acrobats..way too much violin. I think their other theme performances were much better. Sorry.
Loved the character interaction with the show goers! Everything moved along very fast and the different talents were great! Just a super show all the way around and is great for any person, any age and will please people across all demographics and with varying interests/
Fantastic show. Appealing and appropriate to all ages. Venue was easy to get to, easy to find parking and there weren't really any "bad" seats in the house.
Good show, but not the best CdS, not even by a long shot. Way too much choreography, with few breathtaking acrobatics. Nevertheless a good show
The smaller venue didn't take away from the Cirque du Soleil Feel.... We took our moms on Mother's Day and they loved it!!! Would have like to seen a reason that all the bugs wanted the OVO! Maybe they could have had something come out of it at the end??
This was my first Cirque show, and it won't be my last. The lighting, staging, orchestra, costumes, acrobats etc were phenomenal. A sweet love story ties the whole thing together. We took our grandkids, aged 6mos,2,3,and 4 years old. One was scared by the costumes for a while, and two lost interest at different points during the show. The six month old couldn't keep here eyes off the stage...Maybe they were too young for this, although over all they enjoyed it.
I have been a fan of Cirque du Soleil for many years; this show did not disappoint.
The costumes were amazing, I especially loved the grasshoppers! The athleticism and flexibility of the performers left me absolutely in awe, The music was a little too loud at times, so I covered my ears!
Delightful. Exciting. Great music. Athleticism beyond belief.
took my 5 & 10 year old grandsons and my daughter and we all loved it
This was an absolutely amazing show from start to finish. I was accompanied by two teenage gymnasts and they were mesmerized with every act of the show, and that is no easy feat. The performance was entertaining and awe inspiring, especially the contortionist and the finale! We will see another Cirque show in the future!
This show was just amazing!!! Took a couple of budding gymnasts...they were amazed!!! I look forward to more Cirque shows coming to our area in the future!!!! Just outstanding!
One word says it all, AWESOME!!! NOTE: Even though it was announced no "FLASH" photos, security was walking around telling everyone to shut off their phones, if it was meant to be "NO" photos, that is what should have been expressed both on the tickets and the announcements!
Unforgettable experience. The show was just amazing.
