  • Over the Rhine - Excellent Every Time

by hunlyn on 12/9/10Lincoln Theatre - COLUMBUSRating: 5 out of 5

This was the 4th time that I have seen Over the Rhine in concert, and I really, really enjoyed it. It wasn't their best concert (that would the the Trumpet Child tour), but it was excellent, nonetheless.

  • Over the Rhine Amazing Performance

by Squeegeebee on 12/9/10Lincoln Theatre - COLUMBUSRating: 5 out of 5

I remember in the 90's when OtR were trying a little too hard to be the smart hipster band. There were all sorts of comparisons, especially in my hometown of Cincinnati. Now they've ascended the fog of pop assimilation into something wholly their own. The first time I saw Over The Rhine was in 1993. The were louder, a bit overblown, I didn't quite get what they were trying to do. 17 years later, at the beautiful Lincoln Theatre in Columbus Ohio, they were fully formed like a monarch butterfly at its pinnacle. Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler along with their backing band gave an inspired performance. Bergquist's magical voice has become smokier, softer and altogether more powerful.

  • Fantastic music in a beautiful venue!

by MJHappy on 12/9/10Lincoln Theatre - COLUMBUSRating: 5 out of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed this concert. Karen's voice is spectacular and has such a variety of sounds. The instrumental accompaniment was amazing...clearly talented musicians in this band. Singer songwriters performing their own music are always the best. Linford has a wonderful voice, too, as well being a talented songwriter and musician. The Lincoln Theater is beautiful...what a gem for Columbus.

I have seen them numerous times over the last five or six years. Every show is phenominal!

  • Over The Rhine was enchanting!

    by mysticalone2002 on 12/7/10The Ark - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

I drove all the way down from Traverse City, MI to see the show in Ann Arbor and was not disappointed. It was the first time I heard of their opener, Kim Taylor. She won me over the instant she began to sing. Her song, "Build You Up", touched me and has stuck with me ever since the concert. I would love to know where the song is available. OTR was better then I could have hoped for. The bands personality really sets the show and endears you to them. Their music is enchanting and musically brilliant. I love the new album! Thank you for making a song that fits me, "All my favorite people" :)

  • Wonderful as always!!

Wow - it's always just a great show. Their entire band is so very talented. Her singing is amazing.

Loved the concert, small, intimate venue was great. Only wish they sang my favorite OTR song, Faithfully Dangerous. Would have made the show perfect.

Great show, nice venue: Over the Rhine is fine group, opening act Jubal's Kin a very nice find.

  • Great show!

Opening act Vienna Teng was very engaging, and Over The Rhine was polished without being boring.

  • Vienna Teng never disappoints

    by eg13760 on 12/22/09Berklee Performance Center - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

This performance was, as always, amazing. Vienna Tenga and Alex Wong were beautiful and brilliant. They entertain well and have good interaction with the audience, and their music is spectacular. FIVE STARS for Vienna! Although I went to the performance specifically to see Vienna, I stayed for Over the Rhine. Big mistake. I couldn't wait to get out of there, and I am generally very open to all kinds of music. They kept stopping between songs to share long, pointless stories. I kept thinking, get on with it already! The lead singer has an amazing voice, but the overall performance was awful. I finally snuck out about halfway through the show and only wish I had left sooner.

  • Top Quality

by Jeemo on 12/12/09The Ark - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

I love the four cds I have heard, Ohio, Drunkards Prayer, Trumpet Child and Snow Angel. So I expected the show to be very good, but they were even better than I expected and better than their cds. Most of the show came from those four cds, which was nice, but the few songs I heard that were new to me were very good too.

  • Amazing concert - perfect venue

by Grisdelda on 12/12/09The Ark - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

As ever, Over the Rhine gives a great performance with smoky vocals, flawless music and some fun story telling interludes. Their opening act Lucy ___ - ____ was perfect. A good combo of strong vocals with Stephen Wright wit.

  • It was Heavenly

by onlythelonely on 12/10/09Sixth and I Historic Synagogue - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Well, I have seen Over the Rhine in a number of venues in the last ten years to include the UK, I found Tuesday's performance special. Despite some initial trepidation about sitting in pews, the warm the atmosphere soon overcame that. Of late, The Birchmere has been the venue of choice. Was immediately noticeable was "the sound." Karen's voice and the band had a richness not previously heard in those other venues. While most of the songs were the same, they were a whole different animal on this night. I can say with certainty it just wasn't Linford's new hat! While it may have worked for Karen, it didn't really work for me with the sweater and tie but, then again, I'm not married to him. The band also seem more relaxed and in tune with themselves. Was it the space or the dark stormy night. Who knows but I can't wait for their return.

Absolutely delicious. Beautiful space. Wonderful sounds. Over the Rhine is a definite "must see."

  • Warm, Brilliant, Unforgettable!

    by 1021 on 12/9/09Sixth and I Historic Synagogue - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Vienna Teng continues to be one of the most innovative composers/songwriters or our time. She is also a warm, charismatic performer who delivers an incredibly well crafted show. Alex Wong is a veritable ball of energy. A wizard/gnome delivering a vast array of sounds enhancing Vienna's music and adding layers to Vienna's elegantly straightforward compositions. Alex's original song was beautiful, sensitive and touching. I look forward to more like that from Alex.

OTR was on their game last night! It was a great show at a great venue. Vienna Tang (and Ed Wong?) opened for them. I was unfamiliar with their music, but impressed enough that I will be purchasing at least one album. They played a long set, almost 1:30, much longer than I had anticipated. I enjoyed it all, though I found the mixing to have resulted in some muddier vocals than I would have liked (had a hard time making out some of the lyrics as a result). OTR was all good. They also played for about 1:30, if I remember correctly. Sadly, this resulted in a number of people leaving early (it was a Tuesday night, after all). The pews in the Synagogue were not super comfortable, so by the end of the show, my body was ready to leave. Only downside: obnoxious references from Karen love for the man in the White House. Please, did we come for that? No. Do I care that you are a big fan of his? No. Do you have any special ability to comment on matters of public policy? No. Does she not know that people on both sides of the aisle might like her music? Apparently not. Clearly it bothered me, and my good friend that went with me, who is about as liberal as they come, didn't really get anything positive out of the comment. So why mention?

  • Wanted more Over the Rhine

by Jovens on 12/9/09Sixth and I Historic Synagogue - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

The concert was most enjoyable EXCEPT that Vienna Teng and Alex Wong were much too long - their music was boring after awhile and they sang MUCH too long - causing the headliners to come on stage so late that we had to leave in order to meet Metro transfer requirements. We REALLY enjoyed hearing Over the Rhine but we would have preferred not having to listen and watch the time simultaneously. It would have been better if the set-up group had only preformed for a shorter time so that the headline group could entertain with our full attention. Over the Rhine is amazing - a great group and highly recommended!!!!

  • Too Much Teng and Wong

by Wadeink on 12/9/09Sixth and I Historic Synagogue - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

As a venue for a concert, the Historic Synagogue was wonderful. The acoustics were great. The wooden pews a little hard, but an overall lovely building. The concert began at 8 with Teng and Wong - very talented musicians. But they simply played too long. It was 9:40 before OTR started their set, and it felt short. There wasn't much stage banter, and their last pre-encore song finished at 11. They performed two encores, but it was all over by 11:20 with applause breaks thrown in. I don't know if this was bad planning, but I went to see OTR, who are clearly the headliner. Once they began, they performed well, though seemed tired. Nevertheless, they are wonderful, and even a rushed set is worth every minute.

  • OtR was terrific in Boston

Long time fan from NKY now living in Boston. Great to see the band again and playing so well together. Always a thrill to see/hear Karin on the cookie sheet...
