  • Beautiful Experience

by Fierywolf on 12/26/18Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

I really enjoyed this years production more then I have in previous years. It was more brilliantly portrayed this year because they actually brought in some of the school's older children to play many of the principal parts(Sugar plum, cavalier, snow drop) so on and so on. Some of the more "elder" roles in the productions must be played by more experienced dancers from the school in my opinion, in years past they have tried to pass off younger members in those key roles and sadly for me that just left the production and portrayal of the story lacking in depth. Clearly the roles of Clara and to some extent her nutcracker prince can be played by younger members, but the quality of dancing for some of the pieces like the Grand Pas De Deux and the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is more believable when they are played by the more experienced dancers. I was more than pleased with this year's nutcracker and my young niece(who was seeing it for the first time) highly enjoyed herself.

  • The Nutcracker

by LSRGAL on 12/25/18Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

Returned to Oregon after 15 years out-of-state. My granddaughter is already a very dedicated student of dance - all mediums. My Christmas gift to this special young girl (12 years) was a trip to downtown Portland to see OBT The Nutcracker. My daughter (granddaughter's mother) had performed in OBT The Nutcracker in the late '80's as a Bon Bon. Both my granddaughter and myself were not enchanted with the George Balanchine version of this classic. The costumes were all pastel and lacked any definition for each dance, with the exception of the Chinese, or Tea as Balanchine calls it. Our seats were fine and within my budget. However, the Keller Auditorium lobby is so filled with bars, etc., that intermission was not relaxing in any way. Was extremely crowded. The absolutely best part of our day was the hour prior to the show, spent in the auditorium with the OBT Historian. Watching the dancers go through their warm-ups was wonderful. The commentary was excellent. Truthfully, I would not go to see this production again. Hoping OBT returns to the traditional production. Thank you for this opportunity to review.

  • First time

by Manny on 12/25/18Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

It was our first time for my wife and I to go to a show. We weren’t sure what to expect, especially since we both didn’t know the nutcracker story. We thought it was amazing and definelty kept us entertained. Being up close helped because we could see all the details and dancers. We would both love to go again in the future.

  • Lovely performance!

    by K. H. on 12/25/18Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

As usual, The Nutcracker lived up to its reputation and we had a lovely time. I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 as it was really hot in the 1st balcony, so hot that it was distracting.

  • Niece very happy to check off this item on her bucket list

    by M. D. on 12/24/18Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

I saw the Nutcracker in Chicago many years ago and really like this smaller more personalized version better. My niece, who is disabled due to a brain injury, has always wanted to see the Nutcracker. She was ecstatic that she was able to go and enjoy it with family. Thank you for the experience and for the great ticket prices. The 2nd row in the 2nd balcony was perfect.

  • Not enough ballet for me

by Dasha on 12/23/18Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 3 out of 5

Don't get me wrong, the actual ballet scenes were mesmerizing. Costumes, dancers were just magical. Poison Waters' appearance was also a very nice surprise. However, the first act was just boring. In the first hour, there were 2.5 scenes with ballet. The rest was just people walking funny and kids just running around, not dancing. I'm all for thinking outside the box (so yay to Poison Waters), but if I came to see ballet, 40 minutes of it out of 90 is really not enough. I wasn't a fan of this at all. But again, the second act was amazing. Hence, 3 stars.

  • Ballet dissatisfaction

by Loveroflife on 12/23/18Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 3 out of 5

I grew up going to the theatre, ballets, musicals, etc. I took my daughters to this for part of their Christmas present. I’d give the dancing talent a B. I was also disappointed it wasn’t performed with a live orchestra.

  • Pleasantly Surprised

    by Bill W on 12/23/18Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

I brought my daughter thinking this would be a good bonding experience. I was pleasantly surprised how the music and grace of movement immersed me into a different world. That is a sign of great entertainment.

  • Disappointed, like a high school rehearsal.

by Bree on 12/18/18Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 2 out of 5

Was very disappointed! I love the ballet and have been to many different shows. I was really excited to share this one with family and it was a bust! The first half is pretty much a bunch of kids running around on the stage, no ballet whatsoever until the last few minutes of the first part. The second part involves more adult ballet but nothing too amazing as I already was disappointed in the show. It felt like a high school rehearsal. Super bummed out!

  • Nutcracker for kids

by Beauregard on 12/18/18Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 1 out of 5

There is very little ballet in this interpretation of this Nutcracker . The show was more like a play with little kids than the original Nutcracker productions I have seen in the past. This play may be great for kids but poor for adults wanting to see a ballet production of the original Nutcracker

  • Napoli is first rate!

by Coldesanes on 10/10/18Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Everything about Oregon Ballet Theater’s presentation of Napoli was gorgeous and magical. It elevated our hometown ballet theater to a new level of excellence. Thank you OBT and donors for your hardwork and attention to detail.

  • Alice in Wonderland was Wonderfull

by PMLC on 7/4/18Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

I was very pleased with the ticketing and seat selection process for this wonderful ballet. The costumes, the dancers and acrobatics delightful. It is obvious at least one dancer spends a lot time in the gym, doing several perfect graceful 'Dive bombs' while being supported by 4 men. After 3 years in the gym, I STILL can not one shaky dive bomb on a hurdle or equalizer. Amazing.

  • Wonderful!

by Onyxsmom on 6/6/18Bodyvox Dance Center - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Memorable evening of OBT artistry. Loved the intimacy of Bodyvox as well as enjoying the dancers without makeup and costumes. So interesting watching the mentoring of the Artistic Director and the responses of the dancers to his comments. I loved every aspect of the performance!

  • "Closer" was an amazing experience

by sandwriter on 6/3/18Bodyvox Dance Center - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

To be able to see the Oregon Ballet Theatre dancers perform so up-close and personal was mind and heart - opening. We also got to see a sample practice session that was deeply eye-opening to the detailed work, time, frustration, effort, commitment, … of everyone involved. Then, the pieces by 1st-time choreographers showcased unique themes and styles. A fabulous, creative, beautiful, dance evening.
