About

Broadway's musical comedy classic is the talk of the town! The New York Times raves, “ON THE TOWN takes your breath away." The Hollywood Reporter calls it "an explosion of pure joy," and The Wall Street Journal urges you to "see it as soon as you possibly can! ON THE TOWN is everything a great show should be!" With the biggest orchestra on Broadway and a 30-member cast of NYC’s most talented singers and dancers, ON THE TOWN tells the story of three sailors on a whirlwind tour of the city that never sleeps. With just 24 hours of shore leave, they’re eager to experience all that New York City has to offer… including a chance to discover love with the girl of their dreams.
Directed by Tony® winner JOHN RANDO (Urinetown, A Christmas Story) and choreographed by Emmy® winner JOSHUA BERGASSE ("Smash"), this big, brassy musical comedy features LEONARD BERNSTEIN’s “rapturous and red-blooded score” (Daily News), lyrics by COMDEN AND GREEN, and breathtaking dancing inspired by the original JEROME ROBBINS choreography. Playing at Broadway's beautifully restored Lyric Theatre, ON THE TOWN is "as fresh as first sunlight. ‘New York, New York’ feels closer to heaven” (The New York Times).

A better production than the two previous ones. 1944 one ran for two years. Great amended dance. I'm sure much added to dance numbers compared to previous shows. Aside from title song at the beginning. the other music not much to hum home about. This is not "West side story". Dancers and singing superb. Show a bit too long. Costumes and sets exemplary. Technology today much better than yesterday. I wonder if the audience aware of the 48 stars on flag.

    On the Town is sensational

by drtomphd on 10/27/14Lyric Theatre - New York

The 6 young people playing the leads couldn't be any be any better. They define the roles and their energy level is amazing. I can see why there are no days with 2 performances. The choreography is sensational, regardless of whether it is s original from Joshua Bergasse or from Jerome Robbins. Tony Yazbeck makes you want to cry during Lonely Town, and soar with him in Lucky to be me. He is really a triple threat. Jay Armstrong Johnson seems to be made out of rubber. Elizabeth Stanley knows how to get every ounce of comedy out of her role. Jackie Hoffman is wonderfully funny. But most of all Alysha Unphress should be nominated for a Tony. Her 3 songs are over the top. I've seen it now 4 times and cannot get enough of it. I hope I get sick of it before I go broke buying tickets.

    Awesome revival! Incredible company!!

by MaestraK on 10/27/14Lyric Theatre - New York

So many great performers it was almost unbelievable -- singing, dancing (ballet!), acrobatics. ALL the cast was outstanding. The scenes were very long and involved, the choreography was imaginative and intricate (I had a great view from the front of the balcony). This was so different from current musicals (well, I don't go to many because they are so loud I can't stand to listen) -- the long scenes, which all seemed to continue on for a coda after they had appeared to end. As a musician, I kept being amazed, thinking how many hours would have been necessary to put THAT scene together -- so many people on stage. It was like a story ballet where all the different acts are paraded before the royalty at a ball... the different nightclubs showcased different kinds of dancing. The orchestration was great (Yay, Lenny!!) -- bass clarinets, English horns -- all REAL (and played really well), not synthesized. Fine conductor. Just such a sweet, well-done show!

    Stupendous

by cigarmuscle on 10/26/14Lyric Theatre - New York

THIS is the way Broadway should be! Wonderful dancing, singing, acting, a great mixture of comedy, pathos, and romance, with some ballet thrown in. No angst-driven book, no assault on the senses, just well-honed, honest, and intelligent entertainment. I don't think I have laughed so much, or felt so much, at a Broadway show since I moved here some 25 years ago. The full (for a change) orchestra was superb, polished, lush-sounding when required. and precise. All the leads were great, dancers were awesome and had all the steps down to the last move together. Everyone onstage looked as thought they were having as great a time as we, the audience, were/ It's a great show, one that still holds up after all these years. I don't want to give away too much, but you won't be bored one minute. I'm going to try to see it again.

On the Town should be on Broadway forever

by ClassicOTT on 10/26/14Lyric Theatre - New York

Where do I start? I am 27 years old so a musical comedy coming from a film in the 1940's which I had never heard of prior to watching this did not originally strike me as the play I most wanted to see but as I was visiting NYC I wanted to watch an American musical rather than something I could easily watch in London. I am so glad I did, the play was funny, sexy, happy and uplifiting. I came out the theatre buzzing and wanted to watch it again there and then. The actors and actresses were amazing, so professional, the lady who played Ivy Smith has the most impressive ballet moves I have ever seen and I was transfixed everytime she took to the stage. There is nothing bad I would ever say about this play and I would highly recommend it to everyone who goes to NYC to watch this musical. Everyone in the theatre was on their feet at the end and the cast deserved their standing ovation so much and I really hope this stays around like all the classics like Phantom of the Opera and The Lion King as it truly deserves its place up there with the best. Even the orchestra played a part rather than just staying in the background.

This revival is done well. Great dancing. No need to think. Just sit back and enjoy the music and the cast doing a great job with Leonard Bernstein score.

Great time for everyone! Not a false note....everything was a joy. The score was wonderful, the dialogue was snappy, the sets were clever. It was true to itself and didn't try to be anything else. Go see it! The theatre is a gem also.

Saw the previous revival and this one is just sooooo much better. The staging was great, the singers were great, the dancers were great. The leads were awesome. Loved the the directing - there was lots of life to this production. The choreography was terrific as were the sets. Just a fun show from start to finish.

They don't write shows like this one anymore!

by JerseyGirl5959 on 10/25/14Lyric Theatre - New York

Imagine if you will: a classic musical, Leonard Bernstein score and Jerome Robbins style, with a 21st century set and choreography. The orchestra was top notch--dancers, top notch, singing, top notch. And Tony Yasbeck--a triple threat and a REAL leading man!! To make matters even better, we had a Groupon so got first row Dress Circle seat for $68 each!! JUST DO IT--go see this show, you won't be sorry!

    On the Town a must-see

by tessgardella on 10/25/14Lyric Theatre - New York

This is a beautiful and very funny production.... what the lead actors are doing is nearly superhuman! Fantastic dancing, especially the ballet near the end of the show. And a full orchestra of nearly thirty musicians playing the incredible Bernstein music.

on the town - don't miss it!!

by mare136 on 10/25/14Lyric Theatre - New York

It does not get any better than Leonard Bernstein's music and Jerome Robbins choreography, with the wit and words of Comden and Green. Fantastic show.
