NPR's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me On Tour
When the majority of news becomes downright depressing, the folks at National Public Radio (NPR) and WBEZ-Chicago have just the right tonic. Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! is a Peabody Award-winning comedic news quiz show that's been offering up timely wisecracks since its on-air debut in January 1998. Over the years, it's become one of public radio's most popular shows, with millions of listeners tuning in nationwide every week.
Host Peter Sagal, a writer and playwright, has been with the show since its inception, originally as a panelist. Each week, Sagal leads a rotating panel of guests, including comedians, actors, writers, and listeners of the show as they pick apart the week's weirdest and most fascinating news — often to hilarious results. Since 2005, the show has been recorded in front of a live audience. It's taped nearly every Thursday evening, beginning at 7:30 PM at the Chase Bank Auditorium in downtown Chicago. But they also sometimes venture beyond the Windy City, making stops in various cities around the country every year.
Alongside regular panelists like Mo Rocca, Jessi Klein, and Paula Poundstone, a number of actors, musicians, athletes, and politicians have served as guests, from Barack Obama and Madeleine Albright to Salman Rushdie and Stephen Colbert. Listeners of the show also get a chance to participate in games based on the week's news, like "Bluff the Listener," in which the contestant has to pick out the real news story from three presented by the panelists. Winners get a custom-recorded greeting by one of the cast members for their personal voicemail.
Wait Wait continues to be a favorite among listeners and those lucky enough to see the show live. It was even given a Peabody Award for excellence in broadcasting in 2008, 10 years after it first hit the air. After 10 more years, the show celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2018 with a tour around the U.S., hitting up venues such as Los Angeles' Greek Theatre and New York's Carnegie Hall.
After listening to the show for 25 years, I could not have imagined how fun it would be to watch it being filmed. It was an absolute blast!
Interesting to see the interplay of a live recording. To hear the actual broadcast two days later gives a better appreciation of the show.
Tickets were easy to use, great theatre and seats and a wonderful show!
I sat in the balcony and could barely hear a thing. Same for my friends
This was the 3rd time I’ve been to the recording of Wait Wait…in New Orleans. It is so much fun. Constant laughter. Last Thursday’s performance was no exception. Keep ‘em coming!!
We missed about 20 minutes of the beginning of the otherwise excellent show because people were arriving late in weren’t gets getting seated quickly. In our second orchestra seats Our view of the stage was blocked by people, waiting for an usher. Maybe the trouble is parking around this venue? The staff on the floor who looked like employees of the venue were working very hard, but we’ll have to think again before attending anything at the Chevalier in Medford.
This was billed as the Wait, wait show but was nothing like it. I brought my 81-yr old mother and we were excited about the experience. When it started, it was all stand up, not the quiz show. We are ok with the use of curse words, but the frequency of that kind of language used was not as expected and we left early. Quite disappointing.
I was originally hoping to see the actual Wait Wait Don't Tell me show, and then realized this comedy show existed. Love the folks that participate on the show and thought why not enjoy the comedy. The comedians did not disappoint. Very funny and loved the Q&A at the end--nice way to personalize it and wrap it up. Extremely disappointed in the venue. Parking situation is a disaster and their queue was terrible and took forever. Hundreds of people were still outside of the building (including my party) when the show started. Completely missed most of the opening comic. Please figure out your parking and if you can't get people in the building prior to the start of the show, start the show late. Overall, a good experience because of the quality of the performers. Will never return to the Chavalier Theater in Medford, MA.
Each comedian had their own unique style and their responses during the Q and A period with the audiences was at times even funnier. Well worth it.
I booked the show because i followed alonzos comedy years ago, and felt he is a great comic. The comics that made up the show , had a few funny moments, but on whole it was boring, and worse, i felt alot of the topics were politically driven with an agenda? We go to shows frequently, and want to laugh and have a good time, not looking for a political rally
Many outlets advertised this as Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. But it is not. It is a a couple of stand up performances from comedians who happened to have appeared on Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. Ticket prices in NYC were way too high considering all of the other great venues where you can catch great standup.
the combination of these four comedians made my night. i loved the way each of them shared themselves with us and made US feel at home. kudos! and thank you.
From ordering the tickets til the end of the show we had a fun fun FUN experience!!
An evening of tremendous laughs. In the heart of NYC. What could be better than that.
Website “sold” the even as Wait wait Dont Tell Me bit instead is was 4 panelist from the show doing stand up My and my kids all took time off hotel tix etc for one event and was disappointed the tickets advertised was not the show that we went o
Exceptionally funny show. We have not laughed like this in years. The lineup was great, with Alonzo Boden hosting and leading the show. I highly recommend you attending this show when the tour reaches your area.
Alonzo Boden is hilarious in person and "unplugged". Laughed my head off the whole show. All the acts were great. I would definitely go again.
We were fascinated to watch how the show was produced. The final radio version was a snippet of the live performance. Fran Lebowitz was excellent. She didn’t miss a beat and she excelled in the question and answer section.
We thoroughly enjoyed the venue and performance. It was wonderful finally seein it live.
The show was fantastic! The radio show is only the highlights and the live show included probably 3x as many jokes. I will admit, the only letdown is the cast didn't look how similar to the characters in my mind.
