    Newsies Delivers!

by MarkNYC64 on 3/22/12Nederlander Theatre - New York

I have to admit I was blown away by the production of Newsies at the Nederlander Theater in NYC. While I've been a fan of the movie since it came out (saw it in the theater and had it on VHS/DVD), I was not prepared for how tight the show was when the curtain went up. Easily the best dancing/choreography on Broadway right now. The cast is likable and immensely talented. Although the show clocks in at 2 and a half hours, it doesn't seem that long as the show moves at a fairly fast clip. Minor complaints all involve the Pulitzer character which is by no means a criticism of the great John Dossett; there are some plot point that are a bit contrived and Pulitzer's numbers don't add momentum to the show despite Dossett's skillful chops. All in all a great time at the theater!

    Newsies was disappointing

by Samantha711 on 3/21/12Nederlander Theatre - New York

I was so disappointed in this musical. Most musicals I have seen I have been to 3 or 4 times, Newsies will unfortunately not be one of them. The performers are not to blame, they were wonderful for what they were given. Yet, the director completely butchered the story of the Newsies and what it was all about. The Newsies were a bunch of rough street wise kids who had to fight to survive. The directing by Kenny Ortega was brilliant all of the dance scenes were hard hitting in the movie where as in the play you can tell it was classical trained dancers. The "New Generation" spin they tried to put on the story was horrible. Newsies was a musical already there was no need for change. The addition of Katherine in replacement of Denton was horrible. Making Jack "Cowboy" Kelly, who was this street smart, tough, wise cracking boy a painter ruined his charismatic character completely. I literally put my head down in ACT II and covered my eyes when jack was "painting." ALL important scenes that were left out or done wrong. 1.)They should have shown the boys home 2.) They should have had the scene where Jack goes to Brooklyn to see Spot. 3.)They should have had Brooklyn come in during the fight "Have no fear Brooklyn is here" was a classic line and totally misplaced. 4.) That being said both Jack and Spot should have been in the "King of New York Scene." 5.) Jack is the leader of the Newsies and you leave him out of the rally scene? Which is where he is supposed to be arrested. 6.) NOT EVERY HANDSHAKE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SPiT AND A SHAKE it took away from what Symbolized. 7.) The whole point of Jack singing about Santa Fe was to meet up with his "family." So many more things to name, but not enough time. My advice if you are a fan of the movie or if it is you favorite like it is mine, skip the musical. I have said for years I wanted Newsies to go to Broadway then waited months to see it just to go home and have to watch the movie over again because it does not compare. It no longer teaches a history lesson in any way shape or form.

    Newsies makes headlines!!

by cthomas127 on 3/21/12Nederlander Theatre - New York

Finally this film & story have been brought to the Broadway stage. Went into it expecting just a stage adaption of the movie and was blown away. The cast was packed with great singers...choreography was amazing and the cast nailed it!! The set design was amazing, great lighting and a fresh use of video projection to help tell the story. Would recommend to all that are traveling to NYC!

    Fantastic!

by Mmlc on 3/21/12Nederlander Theatre - New York

This show was unbelievable! It strayed only slightly, in my opinion, from the beloved movie with a few new songs and consolidated characters. However the story flowed really nicely. The music was only outdone by the dancing. It was phenomenal. Not to give away anything, but the newspaper/floor dance was amazing. Loved it all.

The adaptation of Newsies was amazing

by Newsieslover on 3/21/12Nederlander Theatre - New York

I was worried, having heard there were (of course) parts of the movie left out, new songs added, etc. But I 100% loved it: I would have stayed in my seat and seen it all again. It's a kind of old-fashioned song and dance musical, with a compelling true story behind it. I recommend it to anyone: OK for children maybe 5-6 and up. Everyone will find something to love about it!

    For kids only

by actor12 on 3/21/12Nederlander Theatre - New York

Was wanting to love this show but didn't-couldn't anybody take the time to write a better book and music. Kids were good and so was the lead but it was very unsatisfying as a whole.

    Disney has another HIT

by TKOTOM on 3/21/12Nederlander Theatre - New York

Disney did it again! UPBEAT... Talent, Music and Choreography, makes this stage adaptation from the movie "dépeint l'excellence." This is not a typical Disney presentation for the real young. Best suited for later teens and above. Recommend it highly. The movie wasn't a box office hit, but I can honestly say I would see this broadway show again, once out of the preview stage. The music sticks in your head after leaving the theatre. Tell tail signs of a memorable performance. Thank you Jack Feldman and Alan Menken. Great Job.

BY FAR THE BEST PLAY ON BROADWAY RIGHT NOW!

by BreRank on 3/21/12Nederlander Theatre - New York

If you thought the movie was good then you have to see this show, no doubt about it! The energy is absolutely amazing. There's not a point without awesome dances or the flow of beautiful voices. It is such a fun and entertaining piece of perfection. I ended up buying tickets for the second show in the same day! Plus, it's a bonus being able to wait outside after it is over and tell the performers how amazing they are. Definitely worth going to see...over and over again!

    Worth the wait since 1992!!

by StephieMarieMust on 3/21/12Nederlander Theatre - New York

I've waiting since '92 to see The Newsies brought to life and it finally happened and it was amazing! The dancing, singing and acting were great! The stage props, lighting and all the effects were great as well! Though it strayed from the movie the script was full of surprises and twists that went so well for Broadway. It was worth every penny and it would see it again in a heart beat!

    Best show I've seen

by slfitzgerald on 3/21/12Nederlander Theatre - New York

The singing and choreography were what I hoped for and more. The cast did great. Didn't follow the movie's storyline but that made it new and exciting. Parking was dissapointing and not as advertised, take the train.

Great show - will be going again!

by DanInNYC on 3/21/12Nederlander Theatre - New York

Great stage adaptation by Harvey Fierstein. While I am a big musical fan, I don't tend to care for Disney "kiddie" productions. But this one I highly recommend. It pays tribute to the movie, but changes the story line enough to also make it feel fresh and new. Awesome cast, including some of the originals from when it was at the Paper Mill theater in NJ last year. I plan on seeing it at least once more before the run ends. Songs are still stuck in my head four days later.
