New York Red Bulls History

Born as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, the New York Red Bulls have been with Major League Soccer from the inaugural season in 1996. Some of the biggest names in soccer have worn the colors of the MetroStars/Red Bulls, including the team's first player Tab Ramos, who doubled as the league’s first-ever signee. Also among New York alumni are U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team players Tony Meola, Tim Howard, Jozy Altidore, Claudio Reyna, and Clint Mathis. The Red Bulls have also boasted international talent from the likes of German great Lothar Matthäus in 2000, and French superstar Thierry Henry, who played 135 matches with the team to close out his playing career in 2014.

New York reached its first MLS Cup finals match in 2008 but fell to the Columbus Crew 3-1. The franchise hit a hot streak between 2010 to 2018 when the Red Bulls finished atop the Eastern Conference five times. Within that period, New York claimed three Supporters’ Shields and advanced to their second U.S. Open Cup final in 2017, where they were defeated by Sporting Kansas City, 2-1. Individually, striker Bradley Wright-Phillips earned Golden Boots in 2014 and 2016, while Luis Robles was awarded Goalkeeper of the Year in 2015.

Nice statdium. Crowd is a little stuffy. There are no cup holders in the stadium. Many people spilled their drinks. Please invest in cupholders?

Great to watch as a supporter, no bad seats.

by Anonymous on 3/18/15Red Bull Arena - North Arlington

Since being apart of the team by being a season ticket holder, I've only missed one home match. The support is great, the team looks good, and the coaching looks sharp. I can't wait until the first match against DC United.

Go if you like soccer but...

by ElMetrofan on 3/1/15Red Bull Arena - Harrison

Love the team, hate the brand. Been a supporter since 1996. I'm an old timer that can't fathom what this "owner" has done to the team this year. Fires our most successful coach EVER, goes cheap on every angle, no real commitment to market or promote the team, disrespecting and ignoring the past. Having Henry for the past 4.5 years was a true gift and worth every penny of admission alone. The best stadium in the league hands down. But what's the point if the product on field is a step back from the past? Another rebuilding year from being a goal from MLS Cup? How does that make sense? As a season ticket holder, I will no longer go to any matches this year or ever wear any RB gear. Red Bull you will not last in this town much longer. You will bleed money and will hurt where it hurts the most, your wallet! #RedBullOut

    New Stadium... Must attend!

by Anonymous on 7/26/10Red Bull Arena - Harrison

I have been going to Metrostars / Red Bulls games all my life and know how many people were turned off by the soccer at Giants Stadium. With the Red Bull Arena now open and half the season already gone, there are no complaints about the experience there (and the team is doing well!) Every soccer fan in this area or from anywhere else should attend a game there as the atmosphere is incredible. One problem that should be noted though is that parking is not terrible on the way there, but leaving, it can be traffic-filled. It's an urban stadium, so what would you expect though?! Taking the train there is easy, but also crowded on the way out... The train station is being renovated and things should be much better in the future! Also, around the stadium there are worn down warehouses and empty dirt lots...Those in the coming years are going to be filled with new restaurants, hotels, apartments, and other amenities you would expect in a 'downtown' area. Should be amazing!

Staff were rude and lacked common sense

by jc158 on 11/3/09Giants Stadium - East Rutherford

I was absolutely furious that I was refused entry into the Stadium simply for having a bag with me. There were horrendous downpours all day and after standing around for over an hour before they started letting people in, I was told to throw my bag in the bin or not be allowed in. They supposedly had to enforce new security measures against terrorism and blame me for not checking their website beforehand. I purchased my ticket through ticketmaster and no such information was passed onto me. Without even attempting to search through my bag, which I would've been happy for them to do as that's expected for these types of events in England, but no such common sense was available from stadium staff. It's either all or nothing from them. More shocking was the fact that parents who had taken their children to see the game were being refused entry. A lot of them had brought a spare change of clothes for their children because of the torrential downpours but were refused outright. Also, due to the weather many people had umbrellas with them and were being told to throw them away in the bin or be refused entry. This standard of security is nothing but farcical when common sense and understanding is obviously not instilled in the staff at the stadium.

Red Bulls final game at Giant Stadium

by Sunshineuknow on 10/27/09Giants Stadium - East Rutherford

My daughter loves soccer...She loves the Red Bulls...Didn't get to many games but I couldn't let them "leave" without her saying good bye. In the rain all night! But I would do it all again for the look on her face....WOW. Thanks

    Red Bulls New York

by CindertownBaggies on 9/27/09Giants Stadium - East Rutherford

Red Bulls New York play at The Giants stadium in New Jersey. The stadium is massive and far too big for the team.Next year they move into their own arena in the same area which will probably create a good atmosphere.Fans tried to show support for the team and create some sort of atmosphere but 10000 in an 80000 seater stadium really doesn't work. The lines from the American Football were also a distraction. The match itself was quite good and both teams tried to play soccer with passion.Probably the right result with Kansas winning 1-0.

by NYRB on 8/25/09Giants Stadium - East Rutherford

All of the elements of a great match were there; The sun, the rain, the red card, the game winning goal, and of course, sitting near Red Bull Nation.

    Something to cheer about

by NextGenFan on 8/24/09Giants Stadium - East Rutherford

Took my six-year old son to see Sunday's Red Bulls home game against FC Dallas--his first MLS soccer game ever. Just a terrific match for him to see and way to win for New York--in the 88th minute with a leap-out-of-your-seat shot and goal. What happened down on the pitch was all he cared about, not the season W/L record, or the travails of the coach, or even the rain showers that hit. OK, you got me: he cared about the hot dogs and popcorn too. Was hoping he'd see an exciting game, and catch the soccer bug. And he did. Score one more next generation fan for the Red Bulls and the beautiful game.

    Professional Soccer Match

by LuckyGilmore on 8/24/09Giants Stadium - East Rutherford

It is a pity that the US audience does not embrace the game more on a professional level. It is great family fun, a quick pace and an exciting day out!

NY/NJ Red Bulls VS W Connection

by FDR505 on 8/6/09Giants Stadium - East Rutherford

Great game! The Red Bulls need to step it up though! Great seats for a fair price. The only negative things were very few fans at the game and too many vendors yelling Soda, Water, Powerade!!!

NY / NJ Red Bulls vs. Los Angeles Galaxy

by Mandalin456 on 7/22/09Giants Stadium - East Rutherford

I was great to see Beckham play, but as far as NY/NJ, they are not very good yet. I would maybe try to go back again next season. Why can't international teams play in the US, that would be awesome!!
