New York Liberty History
The New York Liberty are one of three active founding franchises in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). The Liberty have made six WNBA Finals appearances, in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2023 and 2024, and topped the Eastern Conference seven times. In 2023, the team captured the in-season Commissioner's Cup behind a Finals MVP performance by Jonquel Jones, and later, Breanna Stewart became the first Liberty player to win the WNBA Most Valuable Player award. New York returned to the Commissioner’s Cup Final in 2024, but fell to the Minnesota Lynx. The two teams met again in the 2024 WNBA Finals, where the Liberty claimed their first title. Jones was named the series MVP, and after the season, Stewart was selected to the All-WNBA First Team while Jones and Sabrina Ionescu made the All-WNBA Second Team.

This was a great experience , and we cant wait to do it again.
I enjoyed the game this past Sunday vs. the Lynx. Our seats were GREAT! I was able to take clear pictures of the players from my seat. My 8 month old daughter had a ball. No hassel getting in. It was an overall great experience.
The music was great, the staff was great, and the game was great! Ny got Minny into foul trouble, and it came in handy. that was good defense! I was right in front of the bench! it doesn't get much better! I had fun!
Had an excellent time. The game was very exciting and it was nice to see the Liberty battle and come back and win. My daughter, Lindsay and her friend Kate (Both having the same birthday) went to the game and had a great time. The seat were great too! (Behind the basket near the Liberty bench. Would definitely go see another game and would recommend it to everyone.
I haven't been to a Liberty game since I was a kid. Even though all the players are different now and none of the original players are still on the Liberty it was still a lot of fun!
Great time with my daughter . Exciting game and very fan friendly.
The game had you on the edge of your seat from start to finish - when the Sun tied the game with 3 seconds left I could not believe it - awesome game
What an exciting game. Finally the Liberty seem to be on the right track. It was well coached and well executed and throughly enjoyable
This was my daughters (ages 13 and 9) first female sports event. It was great to show them women are strong and can compete just like their male counterparts. It was great to come out to support Breast Cancer Awareness which was another great reason to be there. The energy of the game was high. It never got boring. We definitely got our monies worth. The intermission entertainment was very engaging. I would definitely come again and bring more people. What excellent players on both teams. NY did well.
Both teams played really good basketball and the crowd was great!
I'm a Seattle Storm fan who lives in Pennsylvania. Every few years, I'm lucky enough to catch the Storm on their only visit to Madison Square Garden. Madison Square Garden is easily accessible by train or bus, and because I've been a WNBA fan since 1997, I like to go to at least one game each season, even if I can't see the Storm play. This year, I was lucky enough to make it to two games. The second game took place on August 14, 2009, when the New York Liberty hosted the Chicago Sky. I like the Liberty but had recently bought a Sylvia Fowles jersey, so I decided to root for the Sky. The great thing about the WNBA is that most home fans don't care if you root for the opponent. Sure, they may give you the evil eye, but they're usually pretty respectful. I was lucky enough to score seats four rows behind the Sky bench, so I was pretty much in paradise. My ticket only cost me $85--a great value for a professional basketball game. If I lived close enough to go to ten games a season, I probably wouldn't sit that close every game. However, since I only go once or twice a season, I figure I might as well spend a few extra dollars and sit as close as possible. The Sky dominated the first half. By halftime, they led by 28 points. However, the Liberty made a comeback in the third quarter, which made the crowd go crazy. Ultimately, the Sky were able to hold on to their lead, and they ended up winning 88-77. The Sky's Sylvia Fowles had 22 points and 9 rebounds, and Candice Dupree added 20 to help her team win its second game in a row. During halftime, several people were honored, including NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who sat courtside. If you look closely at my tip-off picture, you will see him sitting to the left of #20 Shameka Christon. After the game, I headed down to where the Sky bus was parked, to see if I could get a few autographs. After waiting for about 45 minutes, I saw Sylvia Fowles walking toward the small crowd that had gathered. She signed autographs and posed for pictures with everyone. Sometimes, rooting for the opponent can be very rewarding. Even when the Liberty is having a terrible season, their fans still support them. Close to 10,000 people showed up for Friday's game. The same number came to the Mercury at Liberty game in July. Liberty legends like Kym Hampton mingle with the crowd and pose for pictures during the game, and it's not uncommon to see WNBA President Donna Orender walking around the arena. In fact, she sat right in front of me in July. If you're lucky, you may even see Teresa Weatherspoon sitting courtside. I haven't gotten her autograph yet, but I'm convinced I will. If you're looking for a fun and inexpensive way to spend a few hours in New York City, I highly recommend going to a Liberty game. You'll see the best women's basketball players in the world, and you may even get to meet one of them!
Warm concept outside the match. Great entertainments and great attendees. We had a very amazing evening. We never see this in Switzerland... Thanks
I love the NY Liberty and I will continue support them through this season and seasons to com! They may have lost but they sure did rally in the end and if they can manage to put that determination to win in every quarter they play they will be unstoppable. Can't wait to see them at the Garden again. And Maddie the dog is sooooooo entertaining. Love her!
NY Liberty may not be having a great season this year with the change in coach and other issues but the women are fighters and on the way. I took six guests to see the game last Friday and the folks at the Garden do a great job hosting and making the fans feel welcome. The team will get it together and we will be here waiting.
We have never been to a professional basketball match before but it was great fun. The entertainment during the breaks was ingenious. I would highly recommend this experience even if you are not a great basketball fan. Madison Sq Garden was a great venue
The game was fun even though they lost. They are a good team.
This was a great game. Liberty had their chance to make it go into overtime at the end but the basket just never fell. Madison Square Garden was the best facility I have been to where the staff was very helpful with getting you to your seat.
Loved our seats. the teams were amazing. the girls played great in the second half and should have won the game, Overall it was a great game but sad finish. Cannot wait unitl my next liberty game
I thought that the game was amazing. Even though the liberty lost :( i still had the best time. The entertainment that goes on during timeouts and halftime are great and very enjoyable!!
Pat Coyle needs to be fired! Poor choice of players on the court during crunch time.
