New York Liberty History

The New York Liberty are one of three active founding franchises in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). The Liberty have made six WNBA Finals appearances, in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2023 and 2024, and topped the Eastern Conference seven times. In 2023, the team captured the in-season Commissioner's Cup behind a Finals MVP performance by Jonquel Jones, and later, Breanna Stewart became the first Liberty player to win the WNBA Most Valuable Player award. New York returned to the Commissioner’s Cup Final in 2024, but fell to the Minnesota Lynx. The two teams met again in the 2024 WNBA Finals, where the Liberty claimed their first title. Jones was named the series MVP, and after the season, Stewart was selected to the All-WNBA First Team while Jones and Sabrina Ionescu made the All-WNBA Second Team.

  • Great entertainment & great game!

by Ptilu92 on 8/7/10Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

It was a very good moment, beautiful place and great atmosphere. Plus the players did very good by flipping the score and maintaining their level until the end. We also appreciated very much the cheerleaders teams: their technical skills, sense of humor and openess.

Intense, competitive basketball. Both teams played as if they were well aware that the the stakes were high. They were well coached and disciplined and what I admired most is the teamwork and DEFENSE.

My nephew and I had a great time--even though the Liberty lost! Our seats weren't very expensive, but they were excellent. The environment was so energetic and fun and I didn't hear a cussword or jeer all evening. Can't wait to go back.

  • Liberty was great fun

by JGG1 on 7/29/10Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Really enjoyed the quality of play, the atmosphere, and the entertainment during timeouts, particularly their version of dancers! Also special shout-out to the account execs who worked very hard to make the night fun and memorable (and no, I don't work for them!)

  • Amazing Game!

by DAZ4126 on 7/25/10Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I would recommend anybody to go and watch the Liberty if they visit NYC over the summer. This was a great game that had everybody on the edge of their seat from start to finish. The score was always close and it was no surprise that the game went to overtime. Unfortunately the Liberty lost this one, but Cappie Pondexter played amazingly, scoring over 40 points, a season high.

  • A great US Sporting Experience

by englishvisitors on 7/20/10Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

More show than sport . We really enjoyed the whole 'performance. Shame Liberty lost. We were shouting along with the rest of the crowd. Didn't quite get the hang of all the time-outs. The interruptions/entertainment seemed more important than the game (something we Brits are not used to but perhaps could take a lesson from).

  • Basketball at MSG

by Vihuegar on 7/4/10Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

We are used to go to female basketball in Spain, but maybe 2000 people is the top attendance in a match like this. Watch a big place like MSG with lots of people (maybe 10.000) was incredible.

  • Nice happening

by aknoh on 6/29/10Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

It was my first time to watch american basketball alive in USA. Nice happening. I hope, that it would be true also in a future.

by McGirlie34 on 6/28/10Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

The game was great, after a terrible start the team batteled back and overcame Connecticut for a big win. They look like that are finally pulling it together and playing excellent defense

  • Cappie Pondexter is awesome

by Baileyboy55 on 6/28/10Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

This was a great game. The girls were a little slow on the uptake, but they came through. Have to see another game before the season is over. The atmosphere in the Garden was great. Will bring my grandchildren next time. They will love it!!!

  • I like the new Liberty

by JoeRef on 6/23/10Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

They play a much tougher aggressive style and I think that's a good thing. They still need a dynamic scorer to go with Pondexter and Powell

  • by Anonymous on 6/19/10Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Brought my 12 year old niece who has never seen a basketball game. Great for her to learn a bit about sport and also show her some girl power. The game was exciting and we had a blast!
