New York Knicks History

The Knicks were established in 1946 and were one of the founding members of the Basketball Association of America, which became the NBA after merging with the National Basketball League in 1949. The Knicks and Boston Celtics are the only two original NBA teams still located in their original cities.

The Knicks saw early success, advancing to the NBA Finals in three consecutive years from 1950 to 1953. They lost all three series, twice to the Minneapolis Lakers and once to the Rochester Royals. The franchise’s next successful era began in the late '60s, under the tutelage of head coach Red Holzman. They won 54 games in Holzman's first full season as head coach in the 1968–69 season, then improved to 60 wins the following year. The Knicks won their first NBA Championship in 1970, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games. Holzman won Coach of the Year, while center Willis Reed won NBA MVP and Finals MVP.

Holzman and Reed led the Knicks back to the finals in two of the next three seasons, facing the Lakers both times. They split those two series, winning their second championship in the 1972–73 season.

The Knicks did not experience success again until the '90s, when future Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing led them back to the NBA Finals in 1993–94 and 1998–99. They lost both series, first in seven games to the Houston Rockets, then in five games to the San Antonio Spurs.

The Knicks traded for star Carmelo Anthony from the Denver Nuggets in 2011. He proved to be an elite scorer, but team success eluded the Knicks. They made it to the playoffs three times in Anthony's seven-year tenure with the team, winning one series in 2013.

The Knicks reached the playoffs once again during the 2020–21 season, reinvigorated by power forward Julius Randle, who was awarded the NBA’s Most Improved Player distinction in 2021, and advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2023 with the additional firepower of newly-acquired point guard Jalen Brunson. The Knicks most recently reached the Eastern Conference Finals in the 2025 NBA playoffs, marking their first appearance in the conference finals since the 1999-2000 season.

The best energy at the Garden! Knicks came into this game 0-2, but showed up! What a close game. Came down to the last few seconds-so exciting. So much talent on the team. My daughter and I had a blast. Can’t wait to go back.

  • Lakers at Knicks 2025

by Mario Caroppo on 2/4/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

MSG is always a great time. Last year I sat on Chase bridge section which was fun. This year I was in section 419 which was below the bridge obstructing the view. Just on the obstructed view alone I feel that the price was a little too steep. I am fully aware it was a steep price because of the LA at NY mega rivalry, but it should have been priced a little less.

Treated my husband to the Knicks game for his birthday and we had a great time. The view was good and seats were comfortable. The activities in between the breaks of the game were lively, we even saw the young man whom shot the basket to win the money and the 2025 Kia truck!Entry and exit out of MSG was well organized.and the staff was pleasant. Sorry the Knicks lost the game but all around great experience!

  • Lets go KNICKS!

by debozzy68 on 1/16/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Let me start by saying that my husband and I are huge Knicks fans. We decided to have a date nite at a game. Thanks to Ticketmaster, we were able to get great seats which made the experience that much better. I highly recommend seeing the Knicks play at MSG. The atmosphere is electric. The venue is great. The staff are on point from the minute that you walk through the door. If you ever get the chance to go to a game, do it. Win or lose, it's worth it.
