New York Knicks History

The Knicks were established in 1946 and were one of the founding members of the Basketball Association of America, which became the NBA after merging with the National Basketball League in 1949. The Knicks and Boston Celtics are the only two original NBA teams still located in their original cities.

The Knicks saw early success, advancing to the NBA Finals in three consecutive years from 1950 to 1953. They lost all three series, twice to the Minneapolis Lakers and once to the Rochester Royals. The franchise’s next successful era began in the late '60s, under the tutelage of head coach Red Holzman. They won 54 games in Holzman's first full season as head coach in the 1968–69 season, then improved to 60 wins the following year. The Knicks won their first NBA Championship in 1970, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games. Holzman won Coach of the Year, while center Willis Reed won NBA MVP and Finals MVP.

Holzman and Reed led the Knicks back to the finals in two of the next three seasons, facing the Lakers both times. They split those two series, winning their second championship in the 1972–73 season.

The Knicks did not experience success again until the '90s, when future Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing led them back to the NBA Finals in 1993–94 and 1998–99. They lost both series, first in seven games to the Houston Rockets, then in five games to the San Antonio Spurs.

The Knicks traded for star Carmelo Anthony from the Denver Nuggets in 2011. He proved to be an elite scorer, but team success eluded the Knicks. They made it to the playoffs three times in Anthony's seven-year tenure with the team, winning one series in 2013.

The Knicks reached the playoffs once again during the 2020–21 season, reinvigorated by power forward Julius Randle, who was awarded the NBA’s Most Improved Player distinction in 2021, and advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2023 with the additional firepower of newly-acquired point guard Jalen Brunson. The Knicks most recently reached the Eastern Conference Finals in the 2025 NBA playoffs, marking their first appearance in the conference finals since the 1999-2000 season.

  • Very disappointed

by Liz on 1/15/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 1 out of 5

We thought we bought aisle seats. Although we were on the end, we had to pass roughly 12 people and were sat against a wall. This was not obvious on the map when we purchased the seats.

  • Too Loud!!!

by Basketball Fan on 1/15/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 2 out of 5

The basketball was great but there was house music blasting constantly at ear splitting levels. Gave me such a bad headache that I almost left at halftime. Not sure if I would want to go back without ear plugs!

  • Unforgettable NBA Experience at Madison Square Garden!

by Luca on 1/9/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I had the absolute pleasure of attending the New York vs. Orlando NBA match at Madison Square Garden on January 6th with my wife, and I must say, it was a night to remember! The atmosphere in the arena was electrifying. From the moment we stepped inside, you could feel the excitement and passion of the fans. The iconic MSG lived up to its reputation, delivering an incredible setting for an epic game. The match itself was fantastic, filled with thrilling plays, intense moments, and a true showcase of talent from both teams. It was engaging from start to finish, and there wasn’t a dull moment. The energy of the crowd added to the fun, making us feel like part of a massive, spirited community. What truly made it special was sharing the experience with my wife. The game, the laughs, and the sheer enjoyment of the night made it more than just a sports event—it was a perfect outing. If you ever have the chance to catch a game at Madison Square Garden, don’t miss it! It’s an experience that combines world-class basketball, incredible energy, and unforgettable memories. 5/5 stars—absolutely fantastic!

  • Impaired view not indicated

There was a roof that blocked half of the view and this was not indicated when purchasing the ticket, otherwise I would have chosen other places

  • MSG Bucket List Tick and the Knicks!

by GCM on 1/4/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Great night at Madison Square Garden, watching the Knicks win. We were worried about the seats as we were in the nosebleeds, but no issues - great view! Game was great, the entertainment was the best. A bucket list item ticked off. Only downsides - venue access/egress was slow and laborious and the drink and food prices were way too high. That said… Go Knicks and Madison Square Garden is brilliant!

As first timers (from Australia) watching an NBA game in NYC at Madison’s square gardens on New Year’s Day, the Knicks turned it on to make it 9 straight wins. Great memories.

Everyone should go see a game when in NYC! Probably the best thing we done all week. The value for money, all round views, and general experience made it one of the best parts of the trip. If I ever came back to New York again, I would definitely make sure I watched another Knicks game.
