New York Jets History

Beginning play at the Polo Ground in 1960 as The Titans of New York, the franchise changed their name to the Jets in 1963 before adopting Shea Stadium as their home in 1964. In 1968, the Jets became the first AFL representative to defeat the NFL in the Super Bowl as the team beat the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III, an improbable victory that was made possible in part by their quarterback, "Broadway" Joe Namath.

The Jets made a return to the playoffs in the ’80s, and in 1982 made an appearance in the AFC Championship game. Between 2001 and 2010, the Jets made the playoffs six times.

New York Jets at MetLife Stadium

The Jets play their home games at MetLife Stadium, an open-air, multi-purpose stadium located at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey. MetLife is also home to the New York Giants, which makes it one of only two stadiums to be shared by two NFL teams.

MetLife Stadium opened in 2010 and upon its construction, which cost $1.6 billion, was the most expensive stadiums to be built in the U.S. MetLife Stadium has a capacity of 82,500 and has hosted such events as Super Bowl XLVII, Copa America Centenario Final, and the 2021 Army-Navy Game. MetLife will also be one of the sites for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Jets’ biggest rivals are the New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins, and Buffalo Bills.

The New York Jets have reached the Super Bowl championship once, beating the Colts 16-7 in Super Bowl III in 1969 — the first championship game for which the NFL officially coined the "Super Bowl" name.

The New York Jets were originally named the Titans of New York, but the franchise was sold in 1963 and renamed the Jets. They were renamed the Jets since the team would play near LaGuardia Airport, and because Jets rhymed with the New York Mets, with whom they’d share Shea Stadium.

    Game was great, parking sucked!

by JetsFan828 on 9/21/09Giants Stadium - East Rutherford

The game was great. The seats were great. It's always great to see in the game in person. Jets fans are great fun and dedicated to their team. We ended up sitting next to some spoiled sport Pats fans that elbowed me in the face as she was trying to get out of the stadium. Parking was horrible. I definitely recommend getting in a couple hours early just for parking. We went 100 feet in an hour and a half to get to a parking area that was way out of the way. And the Jets parking staff is not the most helpful people around.

    Awesome and unbelieveable!!!!!!!

by SLAPEO on 9/21/09Giants Stadium - East Rutherford

This was one of the most exciting games I have witnessed. It was a very close game which allowed all fans to pay attention every moment. It was my birthtday Septerber 20th so I am quite sure that the memories will last FORE-EVER. I would reccommend this event and other events to my family, friends and co-workers. I would also insist that they use Ticketmaster because it was very easy printing tickets through e-mail and the confidence of complete access to the stadium was also excellent.

    Jets game was unreal!

by chrisnicalex on 9/21/09Giants Stadium - East Rutherford

Took my oldest son to his first football game and we both had a blast! He was in awe. He told me that when the planes had their flybye he had chills. The crowd around us was great. He's already asking when we're coming back.

die hard fans, hostile parking lots

by veroamore on 9/21/09Giants Stadium - East Rutherford

granted i was wandering in to 'enemy territory' after a week of trash talk between the teams ... but this was still the most hostile stadium i've been to by far! i appreciate that i'll get some 'sit down brady!' and 'pat fans go home!' comments when i'm out of new england, but it usually all in good fun. this time, we had quite a few jets fans who were making the attacks quite personal, hurtful, and quite inappropriate with children around! there were times in the parking lots where i was concerned about safety. that said, not all jets fans were horrible - some were nice enough to share bottle openers with us and we had some great laughs with the guys in our section as we got razzed for being the enemy. i loved how they took new england's "yankee's suck" chant and turned it around on us with a "brady sucks" chant and how loud they got the stadium (the crowd's presence definitely impacted the game on more than one occasion!) - it was great to hear such an enthusiastic crowd! (new england fans could probably learn something from them!) the stadium was fairly clean and easy to maneuver in. even the nosebleed seats we had had a great view. the ladies room was kept reasonably clean altho it did run out of TP in most stalls during the game. parking and getting in and out of the stadium was well run - *much* easier than gillette stadium! might be something to learn in busing a number of fans in from satellite lots a couple miles away from the stadium. traffic was not horrible.

This is the first time we went to see them. My husband has been a fan since forever. Even though our seats were at the very top, we were able to see everything clearly. The crowd was having a wonderful time. My husband was on cloud nine!

    Crowds and Loud

by RailGreen on 9/21/09Giants Stadium - East Rutherford

This is the first time I ever went to an NFL Game at Giants Stadium, and it seemed appropriate it was the Last Season for the Stadium, and the First Game in the Jets Home Season, against the New England Patriots, a rivalry comparable to the Boston-New York rivalry in Baseball. The crowd was electric, the game was intense, and the Jets won. The only negative I had with the game, was the overcrowding of the recently added NJTransit trains back to the Secaucus Junction Station. . Considering the Meadowlands Station is new, and this is only the 2nd time it has been used, there will be growing pains in working on loading the trains (which seemed overcrowded, based on the Morning Commutes), but going there by train is Highly Recommended> Going home, it has to be worked better.

    J E T S, Jets Jets Jets

by Lioness on 9/21/09Giants Stadium - East Rutherford

It was a wonderful game with our new QB, Sanchez. Parking at Lynhurst is much convenient than I thought. The only drawback is to look for the buddies who can park right at the Stadium for tailgate party. It was a great game and it was much fun to watch the game at the stadium.

    Giants Stadium was very disapointing

by Football516 on 9/21/09Giants Stadium - East Rutherford

I was very disapointed with the venue for this event. 1. We had shuttle parking which was a pain 2. I could not bring in my nalgene bottle full of water and was forced to throw it away because I couldn't go back to my car in the shuttle lot. Later I was forced to buy a drink for $4.50. Water bottles were allowed in, but not nalgene, or non-disposable bottles? I do not bring disposable water bottles because I do not like to create more waste in the dump and use a re-usable bottle I was forced to throw away after bringing it to many other stadiums over the years. I was very disapointed. 3. The food was terrible! My hotdog bun was stale and the selections and food areas reminded me of a high school cafeteria. 4. My shuttle broke down on the way back to the parking lot. What a mess! The game was good, but I will not be going back to this venue for any other event.

It was my first NFL-Game and it was impressing. I'm from Switzerland and on vacancy here, so may be, it isn't very hard to impress me. But still, it was great. I really enjoyed it.

    Backpack-Problem

by NYCVisitor1 on 8/21/09Giants Stadium - East Rutherford

No information pior to the event was given that taking backpacks is not allowed. Therefore many people who bought tickets could not get into the stadium and see the game. First of all there should be visible info when tickets are bought that backpacks are not allowed at the game. Second of all there should be lockers (or a different option) for those fans who still had to bring a backpack with them.
