New York Islanders History

The New York Islanders, also known as the Isles, celebrated 50 years as a franchise during the 2022-2023 season. The New York Islanders took the ice for the first time in 1972 and forged one of sports' greatest dynasties less than a decade after the franchise's inception. The New York Islanders are one of only two NHL teams to win four straight Stanley Cup Championships, and their legendary run of 19 straight playoff series victories remains unmatched in professional sports.

GM Bill Torrey's brilliant drafting during the 1970s stocked the Islanders roster with some of the game's greatest players. Defenseman Denis Potvin, right wing Mike Bossy, center Bryan Trottier, goaltender Billy Smith, and left wing Clark Gillies powered the dynasty and went on to the Hall of Fame. Coach Al Arbour joined Torrey and his five players in the Hall of Fame after finishing his career fourth all-time in wins. New York Islanders legends Butch Goring, Bob Nystrom, and John Tonelli are also forever enshrined on the rafters at UBS Arena.

New York Islanders at UBS Arena

Opened in 2021 as the new home of the Islanders, UBS Arena sits in Belmont Park — between Montauk and Manhattan — and is the only arena in Metro New York that was built for hockey. The New York Islanders played their first games at UBS Arena in the 2021-2022 season. The design of the arena is inspired by iconic New York landmarks, including Central Park, Grand Central Terminal, and the Park Avenue Armory. It also features the largest arena scoreboard in New York State.

    A Nice Day to Remember.

by Ken16 on 7/17/09Nassau Coliseum - Long Island

I went to the draft with my 5 year old son who is just starting to get involved with hockey. He was amazed with all the excitement about the #1 pick. The kids activities were great, however there should have been a few more things for kids to do. To be picky, the blow up bouncer and hockey shot was great, but the lines were long and that's all the young kids had. If there was another blow up slide, a dunk tank....possibly some other sort of kid friendly activity it would have been helpful to eliminate the long lines and give the younger kids a little more to do. The Father's day picture was a very nice touch! The locker room tour was great, but the long line definitely wasn't worth it for a 5 year old., he was excited to be able to sit where Kyle Okposo does. The highlight was meeting and seeing Trots, Boss and Nystrom. It was great for me and even exciting for my son who has been learning all about the Islanders history. A big thanks to Trots for being so "personal", my son loved it when he gave him a high five.

    Amazing experience in multiple ways.

by DieHardNYIslandersFan on 7/17/09Nassau Coliseum - Long Island

All for free, I got to meet and shake hands with T.V. broadcasters I see every night cover the games, Touch the lowered banners of Islander all-stars whose numbers have been retired, touch one of the four Championship banners, get a picture with a hot ice-girl, stand on the actual rink where countless Islander players have skated the team to victory, and celebrate the Number One Draft Pick, John Tavares who beat Wayne Gretzky's records in the junior leagues. The atmosphere was amazing and I even got to speak briefly with Bob Nystrom, the man whose goal started it all for the New York Islanders with his Overtime goal back in 1980 to win the first of four consecutive Stanley Cup Championships. The Islanders are headed towards another dynasty with a young and very talented team!

    Islanders Draft Party

by bigjunk12 on 7/17/09Nassau Coliseum - Long Island

Being there for the first pick in the draft was great. BUT, there wasn't enough vendors around the Colisium for anything from beverages to food to merchandise. I went downstairs to Doolins Pub to grab a beer and watch the rest of the draft. I guess another 100 people had the same idea. There were TWO, 2, DOS bartenders serving beer, NO FOOD AVAILABLE IN THE BAR and the best thing ever experienced was the fact that the t.v.s were hooked up to satalites so they weren't telecasting the draft on ANY of the t.v.'s in the bar. Now you know why the ISLANDERS are the laughing stock of the NHL!!! Hope that turns around quickly!!!

    Great

by jetsb1 on 7/17/09Nassau Coliseum - Long Island

The event was a lot of fun. Was a great idea and everyone enjoyed themselves. The locker room tour was a brilliant idea. Only thing negative I can think of was in the merchandise area. They didn't have the jerseys for sale yet despite knowing he would be the pick and only one person out of about 15 that worked in that area knew they didn't have it yet. Other than that it was amazing.

2009 New York Islander's Draft Party was great

by Brooklyn1 on 7/16/09Nassau Coliseum - Long Island

I give it 5 stars. I expected about 3,000 people and they announced an audience of about 10,000. The Islanders went all out for this and I thought it was amazing.

BIG PARTY AT COLISEUM AS NY ISLES PICK TAVARES #1

by Caldy on 7/16/09Nassau Coliseum - Long Island

With the Islanders having the #1 overall pick it made this event 'a happening'. The Isles did a very good job having alumni greats on hand, Trottier, Bossy and Nystrom to name a few. The team tried to do a good thing, giving the fans a tour of the players locker rooms, however unless you were on line early the wait was over an hour. Otherwise, it was a party atmosphere and with GM Garth Snow keeping his selection close to the vest it kept everyone in suspense right up until the pick was made. Everytime the big screen showed a picture of possible picks Victor Hedman or Matt Duchene, the 10,000 plus fans at the Nassau Coliseum shook the building with thunderous boos. Likewise, when John Tavares picture was shown tremendous cheers erupted. Actually I personally felt Snow didn't have a choice but to listen to his fanbase and pick the talented Tavares. Fan polls favored Tavares 81%. Any other choice and the fans may have given owner Charles Wang his wish of a new building as they might have burned the arena down. When draft time came Snow did indeed pick Tavares and the fans screamed its hysteric approval. In New Years Eve-like style confetti came raining down onto the totally delighted masses below. It took about 15 minutes for the crowd to calm down as Hedman and Duchene were picked by Tampa Bay and Colorado respectively. At least half of the crowd departed quickly, only to find out on their car radio's or on television back home that Snow had traded up for defenseman Calvin DeHann. Once the actual draft started, the party ended rather quickly....it was short but sweet....and good while it lasted

In one word, "AWESOME"!! The drama leading up to the selection of John Tavares was gripping. Meeting Mr. Trottier was great. It was such a great night to share with my son. Really looking forward towards this season

    Oh what a nite!

by Macorn on 7/16/09Nassau Coliseum - Long Island

The Coliseum shook when Garth announced his first round pick! There might have been a lynching had he not said "John Tavares"...but he did the right thing and the fans responded accordingly. It was a great night and an amazing atmosphere... The only thing that would have made it better, would be a NEW ARENA!

by Hextall72 on 7/16/09Nassau Coliseum - Long Island

Great setup.. Nice to see former players and current staff greeting nd talking to fans.. Lots of activities for the kids and plenty of discounted items for sale for all fans.. A little bit crowded at the concessions, but that was expected... We'll get more room at the LIGHTHOUSE!!!!
