New York Islanders History

The New York Islanders, also known as the Isles, celebrated 50 years as a franchise during the 2022-2023 season. The New York Islanders took the ice for the first time in 1972 and forged one of sports' greatest dynasties less than a decade after the franchise's inception. The New York Islanders are one of only two NHL teams to win four straight Stanley Cup Championships, and their legendary run of 19 straight playoff series victories remains unmatched in professional sports.

GM Bill Torrey's brilliant drafting during the 1970s stocked the Islanders roster with some of the game's greatest players. Defenseman Denis Potvin, right wing Mike Bossy, center Bryan Trottier, goaltender Billy Smith, and left wing Clark Gillies powered the dynasty and went on to the Hall of Fame. Coach Al Arbour joined Torrey and his five players in the Hall of Fame after finishing his career fourth all-time in wins. New York Islanders legends Butch Goring, Bob Nystrom, and John Tonelli are also forever enshrined on the rafters at UBS Arena.

New York Islanders at UBS Arena

Opened in 2021 as the new home of the Islanders, UBS Arena sits in Belmont Park — between Montauk and Manhattan — and is the only arena in Metro New York that was built for hockey. The New York Islanders played their first games at UBS Arena in the 2021-2022 season. The design of the arena is inspired by iconic New York landmarks, including Central Park, Grand Central Terminal, and the Park Avenue Armory. It also features the largest arena scoreboard in New York State.

    Hugs to Tavaras

by IslesGirl on 7/17/09Nassau Coliseum - Long Island

Except for the Al Arbour game, this was the loudest I've heard the coliseum in many years. The most amzing thing was this wasn't evan a game. It was the best indoor tailgate party I've ever attended. This event proved that WE'RE ALL ISLANDERS. A great time was had by all.

    Islanders Fans and the Draft

by FlyersST on 7/17/09Nassau Coliseum - Long Island

Driving in from Pennsylvania to Uniondale (?!) we were late to the draft, but only by about 25 minutes. At that point, there were already parents filtering out with their wide-eyed restless children. Upon entering Nassau Coliseum, it was difficult not to notice the wide-spread desolation. There were no fans. There were no Vendors (food or drink). We finally found a bar, purchased our beverages and entered the rink. Easily making our way down to the front row, the floor was covered with orange and blue confetti, lots of important looking men in suits, security, and a significant lack of Islanders fans. Ultimately, this was not a draft "party". They opened the building for Islanders fans to watch their team pick the first eager draftee. I heard the party at Prudential Center last year was a blast, lasting for hours complete with rival fans being tossed out for fighting. So Fan Up Islanders devotees, there is a whole NHL out there for you to appreciate.

by imone5 on 7/17/09Nassau Coliseum - Long Island

The coliseum was exciting. Everyone had a great outlook, for greatness to come. Everyone patiently waited until the pick was announced then everyone partied as if it was new year's eve. All in all the draft party was amazing I will never forget the event.

by ceilemoons on 7/17/09Nassau Coliseum - Long Island

The atmosphere at the colisuem was awesome. It was a great night out and much better than watching the draft on t.v. The whole place was rockin from all the fans waiting for the NYi draft pick announcement. The locker room tour was cool and the fans were all so friendly. (Unlike the other NY hockey team fans.)

    The youngsters had a ball

by Eginhard on 7/17/09Nassau Coliseum - Long Island

I think the Islanders did a smart, cleaver move by getting all the attendies to register to get their addresses, telephone numbers & ' E ' mail addresses. I'm sure the season ticket sales increased, particularly when our first draft pick # 1 John Tavares was announced to everyone's delight.

    The Draft Party for 2009

by Tesswpfd on 7/17/09Nassau Coliseum - Long Island

Well my son and I had a good time despite the weather. Once we were inside we had a great time though. My only regret was missing Trottier as I was wearing "his" jersey. A security or management type pulled him away from where he was signing when I was next and well that was that. All in all thanks for throwing the party.

Draft Party - Should Have Been Better

by gman335 on 7/17/09Nassau Coliseum - Long Island

The Islander Draft Party was a fun event for my 10 year old son and I, despite the poor planning by the Islanders. We were able to meet Bryan Trottier, but it was more out of determination on my part than anything the Islanders did. There were just crowds of people barely able to move on the main floor. I asked several security people if I was standing on a line and what was the line for. Not one of them could answer that question. People next to me thought they were waiting to see the locker rooms but were actually standing on the line to meet Mr. Trottier. All this chaos when 60% of the coliseum was empty. I wondered why weren't other parts of the stands / being used to alleviate just a little of the floor traffic. Maybe 4 or 5 ushers would have improved the event immensely. Once the Draft actually started the volume on the speakers was much too low. I hate complaining about that because during the games they are usually way too loud. But in this case there was dialog going on and it would have been great to hear it. My son turned to me at one point and said "Dad, it's hard to hear about the players, but we can watch it again when we go home because I'm recording it." It was a good plan because that is exactly what we did. I don't want to complain because overall the event was a lot of fun. My son was thrilled to meet Trottier, he wanted to meet Bobby Nystrom but again the line and the crowds just made it impossible to even figure out what line to stand on. The volume was raised eventually, and the fact the Islanders had the first pick made it more of an event. My biggest complaint is that as fun and nice of an event that it was , it was just so obvious to me that a little better planning and foresight would have made it so much better. I always end up walking away with the feeling that I am dealing with a second class organization when I and all of your fans want to believe that you are top notch professionals. Don't give up - just promise to get better!!! Sincerely, Steve P. Franklin Square

    JOHN TAVARES A NYI!!

by Giaco on 7/17/09Nassau Coliseum - Long Island

This was an awesome event. The islanders had many things going on including selling merchandise, season tickets, and equipment. The equipment was was priced very cheap as well. They played the draft on the TV and the place rocked!

Way to go Snow! Well done Isles!

by IslesFan27 on 7/17/09Nassau Coliseum - Long Island

A great turnout and well done. I appreciate the Islanders giving their fans an opportunity to be a part of a proud day. They did a great job of generating such a strong turnout for a draft pick. Really nice to see NVMC filled again, and in honor of the Isles. Hope this marks a turning point in Islanders history and is the beginning of good things to come for the team and the community. While I think they could have used some more open concession stands, overall the organization recognized the possibility for the future that this day brought and thus treated it accordingly!

    Draft Party was forgettable

by mikescat on 7/17/09Nassau Coliseum - Long Island

The tension in the arena leading up to the selection was palpable. You could sense that Islander fans would probably start a riot if Tavares was not selected. The selection was inevitable and lasted under a minute. All downhill after that. A good time for the real die hards, but in hindsight I should have stayed home and read about it in the paper. Cant wait for the season to start though for some real entertainment.

Exhilirating ... but a little disappointing

by ru12xu on 7/17/09Nassau Coliseum - Long Island

The tension leading up to Snow's announcement of Tavares was palpable, and the jubilation when he made the announcement was really electric. The trading up to 12th was also exciting, but the selection of DeHaan took a little wind out of the arena.
